I think exactly the opposite ... spear is in advantage only if the user is mounted... otherwise sword is much more versatile and not really much weaker in delivering blows and as you can see the katana guy delivers much more successful blows... for a reason
@sunreaper2 The naginata can do everything a katana can, but better. It slashes better and the thrusts are better (they share the same blade, but the extra length gives the naginata strikes more force). The main difference is range, the naginata will always have the first strike.
A naginata would have troubles against a short sword and shield, as would all polearms in a 1v1 scenario. With a sword and shield you can parry and strike instead of just 1 or the other.
