@MisterBroMen Thats wright US and Philipines got great schools. But always the Greek Officers were the best. All the shipping companies first choose the greek officers then the rest.
There are a lot of Hawsepipers out there. What does an education at the USMMA provide other than working your way up. 1. Is a degree in Engineering or Marine Transportation. 2, Your Coast Guard License as a Third Mate or Engineer. 3. One year of on the job training. 4. Your choice of the branch of service, either Active or Reserve. 5. 100% Job Placement And to clarify...you can join Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, NOAA, or National Guard.
as a merchant marine myself, ive always wondered what the point of this academy was. ive never met someone who graduated from it. but i was wondering what is the advantage, and i mean no disrespect. everyone ive run into on boats whether it be engineers, chief engineers, captains, and pilots, all started out as just normal deckhands with no training
@chipleader14 i could say that for any of the other service academies... "just start out enlisted and then end up becoming an officer"... its just a different route that is not meant for everyone.
This isn't a marine academy. It's a merchant marine academy. In other words you wouldn't be a marine you would be a mariner. And yes you can join the navy seals after but you have to go through the regular training and admissions before that.
Why do people hate other service academies? I wanna go USMA, but I respect every other academy and only go as far as playful competitive banter. USMMA has the most diverse programs of all the FSA's and you can commission into any branch after graduation.
For the nomination you get one from your states's congressman and you will be interviewed by a panel usually. They have a limited number of spots to give out. Once you get the nomination you have completed the application.
In 2008, the Superintendent got fired, as did the dean. The next superintendent quit after a year. Faculty have taught classes in disciplines in which they have no academic training. Childish behavior is quite common in the classroom, and cheating is a mjor problem.
@yatyas02 Where did you get all of this hostility? This Academy has one of the toughest academic programs in the US. Engineering students complete a 5 yr ABET accredited degree in 3 years and the professors are some of the worlds foremost experts on Marine Engineering. While attending their program, one of my professors was credited with inventing the jet engine afterburner and another with developing the coolant pump on the sea-wolf class submarine. Hardly inept!
@DrBoooby In 2008, the Superintendent got fired. so did the dean after investigations by the Coast Guard and Government Accounting Office. The next superintendent quit, and the current dean has shaky credentials from forieign academic institutions. There are serious financial problems and several staff have been let go. There are serious discipline problems and an increase in honor violations. The current leadership has a tough row to hoe.
@yatyas02 I'm not sure about and fraud but what I do know is that the Superintendent you are referring to was one of the best in recent history. He was able to successfully recruit enough capital to refurbish the barracks and made many improvements that were long overdue. Its not surprising that they r having financial difficulties now b/c our economy is depressed and most funding comes from Alumni. Even the government is in fiscal crisis, maybe we should investigate our President and fire him.
@DrBoooby Joe Stewart screwed up, big time. The stuff hit the fan when he ordered the dean to change some midshipmen's grades. Both got fired for that, plus fiscal mismanagement on Stewart's part. His indulgence of midshipmen resulted in poor discipline and escalating honor violations. I know, I was there.
@yatyas02 I'm not sure about any fraud but what I do know is that the Superintendent you are referring to was one of the best in recent history. He was able to successfully recruit enough capital to refurbish the barracks and made many improvements that were long overdue. Its not surprising that they r having financial difficulties now b/c our economy is depressed and most funding comes from Alumni. Your tax dollars pay to educate students who will make big $ when they graduate. Reality checK: in spite of all the barracks games, the midshipmen are ill disciplined and arrogant. Many faculty are locally recruited; the ineptitude and incompetence are unacceptable for a Federal Service Academy. The place is a fraud.
@MisterBroMen More practical, hands on training. A friend who has taught at both SUNY Maritime and USMMA says that the students at SUNY Maritime want toget good jobs, those at USMMA want the prestige. USMMA continues to have serious problems; the third Superintendent (in three years) got canned a month ago.
@yatyas02 What do you actually know about the USMMA. The academy itself does not have problems. It is a wonderful education and it isn't just about prestige.
@TheBanjoSlayer USMMA only has a reputation b/c you need a congressional appointment. Meaning if you didn't get great grades in high school, you probly wont get in. However all of these schools have essentially the same thing with minor differences. SUNY better for deckies Maine better for engineers. But screw those Massholes, a bunch of loafer wearing New-England yachtsmen.
have a question...i live near kings point, not new london, so im just wondering ...if u graduate from the mma can u join the coast gaurd and still be an officer???
@sparklerbombg you can graduate USMMA as a Coast Guard officer, but regardless if you go to four years of college and then go to USCG OCS you'll be an Officer. Although most of my Coast Guard friends at my local station enlisted after college instead of going to OCS
@Amocee If we dont, then who would? If they didn't, then we'd all would probably be dead now. And chances of dying in your local area are actually higher than dying in the military.
Not everyone graduates with a BS in engineering. The deckies don't. And there are some that get a degree in systems etc. etc.My son is also a graduate. He is an engineer working as a civilian on a military ship. He is also in the Navy reserve as are all of USMMA midshipman.
Sounds interesting but the only thing that confuses me is their relationship to the military? I've heard the USMM are civilians but I've also heard USMMA graduates are commissioned as Naval Reserve officers. Does that mean they show up once a month for Navy training? Would that make USSM eligible for Veterans' benefits, etc.? Just curious.
Also, what can anyone here tell me about the academy, field training, and career itself from personal experience?
All USMMA Cadets Graduate with BS in Engineering, and it must be accomplished in 3 years plus sea year. My daughter is a USMMA grad: Now heading to Rotterdam, Netherlands will be surveying ships in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, what are you doing 3 years out of school?

Indoc is nothing compared to Marine or Army Boot Camp. It's two weeks of running around and being yelled at. If you can take that, you'll be fine. And yes it's worth it. But btw, the academics make indoc seem like a piece of cake.
As a grad, the answer is a resounding "yes". You will hardly remember Indoc when you graduate. The bonds of friendship are the strongest in the world. No school has a better alumni. Question is, do you want to be a leader in the future or not. We range from astronauts (shuttle commander Capt. Kelly), ex head of AFL-CIO, Lane Kirkland, to industry leaders in private and military.
Since you are a graduate, I'd love to hear about your experiences at sea and various ports?! How do you like living at sea? How much ship space can you call yours? What countries have you been too?
I am a graduate of Kings Point, You must take an appointment in the Naval Reserves and you need to look at the commitment that you have to serve on merchant ships. The business is better now than it was 20 plus years ago, but many of us back then could not get jobs. Those that opted for Navy careers were so much better trained than our Naval Academy counterparts. You should be proud of your position and take great advantage of it.
Best wishes to all cadets. My uncle was Engine Cadet Francis McCann. He went down on the Meriwether Lewis in one of the North Atlantic convoys during WW II. So few people know the military tradition of Kings Point Mariners.
The purpose is to train sailors for merchant ships, ie. tankers, cargo, etc. where they can earn a fantastic living. Some are employed by shipping companies in an on shore job. Secondly, they serve in the Naval Reserve with the rank of Ensign. This service covers the cost of their education, which is free while at the academy.
Wow ! it's almost a military school ! In France we don't have so many ceremony and we don't wear uniforms. Is it, like in France, a dual purpose training (deck&engine) ?
If only I had known about this opportunity as a young person. Fortunately, our son had the opportunity and graduated in '06. What a great experience to get a top notch education.
The Merchant Marine took some of the biggest losses to help us win World War II. Most people forget about the Mariners but they are indispensable during peacetime. The Navy needs them during wartime too.
it means that, just like the other US millitary service academies (except Coast Guard, I think)you must get a letter of monination from your Congressperson to apply.
wrong, some use guns - if they go active duty or in the case of myself, if you are in singapore or philippines and required to carry a shotgun or 9mm.
Its not the Marines its Merchant Marine, though you can get commissioned as a USMC 2LT at graduation, a few kids in my class did.
hey, they don't suck. just cause your willing to sacrifice your life in all doesn't mean that the work they do isn't needed or anything. My dad was a merchant marine during the Viet Nam war.
good luck getting your equipment... its all transported on Military Sealift Command ships operated by civilian mariners. I worked there for a bit, its amazing the ignorance within the armed forces regarding the transocean logistics of their supplies.

Nice video ^^ !

If only I had known about this opportunity as a young person. Fortunately, our son had the opportunity and graduated in '06. What a great experience to get a top notch education.

The USMMA opened to door for me to travel to over 100 countries, to become a Master of a US-flag mega Containership,
serve my nation in the Persion Gulf War,
and now as a Marine Pilot. The best decision I ever made was to attend Kings Point!!! Just Do IT!

USMMA just sent me a recruiting letter for football

My dad was a merchant marine during the Viet Nam war.

maybe you didn't get their motto - "deeds, not words". So prove it, or shut it.

good luck getting your equipment... its all transported on Military Sealift Command ships operated by civilian mariners. I worked there for a bit, its amazing the ignorance within the armed forces regarding the transocean logistics of their supplies.

funny thing is Marine officers come out of the academy
glenn2070 3 years ago
Indeed. Even some Army officers are Kings Point grads. The last command I had was assumed by a USMMA Alum.
