I don't honestly know why they let them use wood burners and boat kits cause one could make a great knife out of it, but i dont think there is much to worry about. most of these guys seem genuine about how they have changed.

i think these hobbies are great. and you know, inmates make makeshift tattoo equipment....i think prisons should have "tattoo shops" and provide safe, sterile equipment to do tattooing.

It amazes me they don't give people like the guitar guy a workshop so he can make some guitars and sell them. It would keep him busy, most of the guitar money could be given to victims of crime charities. Maybe give him a small amount of the money to buy stuff from the prison commisary. @Benzidrine they shouldnt be allowed anything, and they shouldnt be allowed to continue education or anything. they should be gettting their ass kicked and be remembering what they did instead of forgetting the problems and pain of the past. prison isn't an adult education centre nor a playground. god highschool detention is harder then prison today. we should take it from the russians, they have over a 50% self muilation before the end of their sentence cause its so rough.
@Benzidrine Programs like that have been tried over and over and it never works. Prisoners might learn a trade but the cost is generally more than any production. That is why prison labor fell out of favor. I think its unfortunate because the guys do often learn something and some use it on the outside but it just costs to much. Think about the extra security costs, facility costs ect ect ect.
@VitreousCut We have already been through the reform movement and all it did was increase costs. It seemed to help for the first yr out but when you get to 2,3,4 yrs out the numbers don't change. What it comes down to is you can't force someone to change. Either they are going to take advantage of education programs and break their patterns or they wont. If these guys really wanted to improve themselves they would be in HS or college classes.

But if people aren't interested in doing anything while in prison then we should leave them there, for life if need be. You can't force someone to change but you can use prison programs to decide who should be released and who shouldn't. Problem with the previous reform is they all eventually got released anyway so its hard to blame them for their minimal effort. Never release the unrepentant.
@VitreousCut I totally agree with that. Problem is they all have a date to get out. lol Some won't live long enough to see that date but the vast majority do. As a forensic psych I think there should be programs just to keep the guys minds busy. It does help the general stress level in the facility but the cost is very high and the benefits after these guys get out is very little.

@sotovo Everybody knows that murder is wrong. If they broke the law with murder and they are punished for it then they will not do it again. No prisoner should have their own workshop and they should even provide head phones and equipment to make the guitars. He is in there for a reason, not to be kept busy.

If it were up to me they would have even more hobbies and jobs/tasks to do so that they are better equipped for when they come out and dont just re offend. You dont realise that a lot of these criminals had criminal parents and were brought up thinking that this way of life is right. We are only as good as our teachers and in this day and age a lot of parents suck BIG time.

It amazes me they don't give people like the guitar guy a workshop so he can make some guitars and sell them. It would keep him busy, most of the guitar money could be given to victims of crime charities. Maybe give him a small amount of the money to buy stuff from the prison commisary. And if he ever gets released he will have a trade. Everybody wins.

@Benzidrine they shouldnt be allowed anything, and they shouldnt be allowed to continue education or anything. they should be gettting their ass kicked and be remembering what they did instead of forgetting the problems and pain of the past. prison isn't an adult education centre nor a playground. god highschool detention is harder then prison today. we should take it from the russians, they have over a 50% self muilation before the end of their sentence cause its so rough.

@Benzidrine Programs like that have been tried over and over and it never works. Prisoners might learn a trade but the cost is generally more than any production. That is why prison labor fell out of favor. I think its unfortunate because the guys do often learn something and some use it on the outside but it just costs to much. Think about the extra security costs, facility costs ect ect ect.

@VitreousCut We have already been through the reform movement and all it did was increase costs. It seemed to help for the first yr out but when you get to 2,3,4 yrs out the numbers don't change. What it comes down to is you can't force someone to change. Either they are going to take advantage of education programs and break their patterns or they wont. If these guys really wanted to improve themselves they would be in HS or college classes.

But if people aren't interested in doing anything while in prison then we should leave them there, for life if need be. You can't force someone to change but you can use prison programs to decide who should be released and who shouldn't. Problem with the previous reform is they all eventually got released anyway so its hard to blame them for their minimal effort. Never release the unrepentant.

@VitreousCut I totally agree with that. Problem is they all have a date to get out. lol Some won't live long enough to see that date but the vast majority do. As a forensic psych I think there should be programs just to keep the guys minds busy. It does help the general stress level in the facility but the cost is very high and the benefits after these guys get out is very little.

@ThePerfectLie1 As long as we are clear on the distinction between "discipline" and "punishment."
Being punished without reinforcing anything positive will not teach "discipline."
I.e. Grounding a kid for not doing their homework will not teach them how or why to do good homework.
If we apply this idea again to prison, we see after punishing someone who broke the law, they won't necessarily know what else they can do differently when released.
Other than avoid being caught the same way.

@sotovo Everybody knows that murder is wrong. If they broke the law with murder and they are punished for it then they will not do it again. No prisoner should have their own workshop and they should even provide head phones and equipment to make the guitars. He is in there for a reason, not to be kept busy.

@proppa1000 no, it WOULDN'T be funny if someone came up and smashed his guitar. my husband is in a city jail currently and he made a little guitar out of toilet paper rolls, tooth paste, and strings he pulled off from his sheets and the deputy came in and took it and broke it in two right in front of him. how funny can you possibly think that is. you're sick.
