@guitarcolossus , DiMeola is a dick for sure.. Search youtube for ' Paco de Lucia & John McLaughlin II - Live" by nanohacker He has their whole concert posted in 5 parts. Also he has "Rapidshare' links where you can download the complete video. The video quality is very good. The performance is one of my favorite. Paco and John smile a lot. :-)

On that concert recorded at Freiburg is no room for a third guitar player.

I think the problem also is that Al is not using a nylon string guitar that makes his sound too dominant.
very rhthmically. Hell this riff is arhythmic on pourpose something he toys with on many recordings. I agree though that John and Paco are the better, more musical players generally, but it's because of an excellent sense of the melodies, and fire and passion that they can improvise at those lighning speeds and still sound beautiful.
They are all Super Heavy weight musicans no dbout bout it...but John and Paco are on a whole other level....I'v Never seen a guitar player move in and out of styles like Mclaughlin has....Mclaughlin #1,De Lucia#2,Di Meola #3.....im not taking anything away from Al he Awsome at what he does...Just saw him in concert with Return To Forever...In was Cleano...
Als great but he's tring to prove he's on top which is questionable. When it comes to playing from the heart Paco and John have it together. Al, doesn't quite cut it; peole are so impressed by the way he solo's that they'll believe any rythm or riff Al plays fits with everything he plays. Truth is he can't play Rythm. He may take it for soloing but that's about it. John and Paco enjoy playing with each other because they share a connection that you can see in them, and well Al? Go figure!
anyone who thinks al can't improvise should see this: Al Dimeola jams @ NAMM 2005 (type in the search field). i think THIS IS improvisation both rhythm and melody.(most people pay no attention to rhythmic variations, maybe thats why they think al can't improvise?) forgive my english, im hungarian
yep I think at this period they were not really coming good together. According to some rumours there was a big fight between Al and Paco at this time... That would explain there attitude on the stage... But in any case they play great...
All of them are great guitarists! Al is Guitarist Nr.1 on the planet!

Al always has to go over the top on the signature...the solo was great even if he can't leave out the "look what I can play" stuff.
But like litisbar says the magic is ALL three together.
