  • @pilgrim15801 Thats per hour, not per month. 1kwh says that system can produce 1kw every hour. It does not mean it can only produce 1kw total.

  • @pilgrim15801 As he mentions, that hydrogen would fit in two normal barbecue size tanks, but his township won't let him compress his own hydrogen and store it in a residential area. Hydrogen is very safe but quite misunderstood. Maybe it's because hydrogen has a nearly invisible flame they are afraid firefighters would walk into it and wouldn't know until it was too late.

  • @pilgrim15801 There is no purpose in storing the oxygen. The atmosphere stores it for him, without requiring more wasted energy to compress it. When he burns the hydrogen he just takes the oxygen right back out of the atmosphere.

  • @pilgrim15801 Oxygen is not a fuel. All fuels do not burn without oxygen. I do understand that compressed oxygen is valuable, and can be used for welding. In this instance, the cost in energy, is not worth it. the purpose is to power his house, not power a compressed oxygen factory. It takes energy to compress the gas. By venting it into the atmosphere he is now "storing" oxygen for later use, without requiring additional energy to compress it.

  • @ryn4181 Battery technology is certainly lacking, a more sophisticated battery system could be converting the hydrogen gas back to electricity using a fuel cell. But storing hydrogen sucks even more

  • Cool idea. Completely academic. It's nice to know it CAN be done, but for the money spent to construct this system, you could have bought a lifetime of conventionally generated power.

  • He has done this with his mind not his bank account, mindset is all that makes matter what it is, he sees freedom by action, love to live this way by all means and you will. We are fully cabable of living and being free from the thought of having to work hard for something by simply replacing that thought with the thoughts HE thinks and by the example of HIS fruits.   • If you can't get all the electricity you need from 56 solar panels, then you are using too much electricity. The solar panels and the battery bank will take care of that house all year.

  • I Feel a Little Aprehensive about having hydrogen tanks so close to home.There is a gentleman who has posted here on You tube concerning his Corvette that he runs on hydrogen.He uses Hydride so as to keep everything safer as well as more compact..He clains that he could shoot through the tanks with armour piercing bullets,open the tanks with a chain saw or drop a lit cigarette in without danger.

  • WOW I can imagine how much this system cost. As always the devil is in the details and I am always leary when nobody will give you the true cost to build this system. What scares me is all the pumps and switches, where is the monitoring system?

    Although it was experimental I know the initial outlay was quite steep. How long ago was this video first put up? I don't see a post date unless I am missing it. I would love to put this syetm in my home. Grats on a awesome project!

  • @fzeeshan - People with a little bit of common sense. It's one thing to make something like this work as an engineering project etc, however this is not something that is cost effective for the majority of homes, nor is it feasable. If you was to take this setup and do a cost breakdown, including maintenance and parts then you would find it very hard to compete with domestic energy. That said, i still like the idea that people are playing around with these things, learning from it etc.

  • @TheSpankymonkey - Ditto Spanky, I work in the gas industry, however I believe in energy efficiency be it fossil, solar, geo therm, hydro dams,etc. Cost effectiveness is the key. My neighbor spent 20k on a geo therm unit when he built his home not including the closed loop well hole which was 3k. Another family acquaintance installed a wind turbine for 35k. Both now realize that they could have bought a lot of cellulose or spray foam insulation and fossil fuels for a much cheaper investment.

  • id love to talk with this man to find out how he is vacuming the propane tanks to fill with HH and then to ask how much LPM his hho genarator is making and then when using is HH into his hh power cell what is his output volts and watts DC. im thinking of doing pretty much same thing but i have ran into problems with hho genarator pressure to fill propane take because low pressure from genarator i havent made a hho to power cell yet ao i need to know how much power hes making from the hho

  • @jonathanwe I hope you are not confusing browns gas with hydrogen their is a huge difference hydrogen is quite stable but hho is not . Also I seem to recall that these tanks are not pressurised but if you want to go down that road water pressure alone inputed to your electroliser is commonly used.

  • anyone who states that this house has a hydrogen bomb in the back yard knows nothing about H-bombs... The H-bomb is not just comprised of exploding hydrogen (which by the way is harder to make happen than exploding a gas station) An H- bomb still needs a radioactive element like plutonium. People always bring up the Hindenburg as a display of how dangerous hydrogen is, in fact it is more likely that the burning of the airship was because of the material that the chamber was made of.

  • @greywolf210 hydrogen gas is explosive. when 10000 gallons of high pressure hydrogen catch fire and explode in your back yard it may not be nuclear but that, sir, is a hydrogen bomb. i work on a nuclear submarine and i run a machine called an automated electrolytic oxygen generator which separates hydrogen and oxygen with electrolysis much like we see here. i assure you. hydrogen is no joke. good idea but i say bury the tanks.

  • @superlibster Don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying that hydrogen isn't dangerous, all I was saying is that there are some major scare tactics going on when talking about dealing with hydrogen. It will explode, it's just that gasoline has a lower heat capacity, which means that it will explode at a lower temperature than hydrogen. Gasoline is more volatile than hydrogen, yet we consider gasoline a "safe" energy source. I completely agree that the tanks should be buried for added safety.

  • It's not so green energy as it might look to me, cost of resources to build this instalations and its spare parts, maintenence for millions houses is far less ecologicaly than big industrial turbines or even atomic reactors... I know that many like indepnedance but its not way to go unfortunately.

  • There are many ways to make homes more energy efficient. This man seems to have covered most of them. But he didn't disclose all energy losses. Believe it or not, there are still more ways to conserve wasted energy in the home.

    And yes, it costs money of course.

    Oil companies are the only reason systems like this cost so much. If it were cheep, everybody would be doing it. And crude would be no more.

  • R19 for walls and R38 for roof is not super insulation is normal at best but I must admit not sure the standard in the place this is build.

    Also see a lot of people here concerned with the cost of such installation the problem is that people want huge houses and inefficient appliances.

    What I see in this video can be used for about 10 energy efficient homes.

  • On another note I count 68 solar panels, if each is producing 180w a typical figure for your average solar panel, then that adds up to 12KW of output.....Why would you even bother turning any of it to hydrogen? except for running the car he could be pumping most of that back into the grid and receiving a solid amount of cash from the power company.

  • @weetiewildrose hydrogen and HHO are much cheaper than a gas/ propane alternative. wonder how much them ten 1000 gallon tanks would cost to fill up with lpg or propane?. plus HHO is cleaner and non FOSSIL. which for me is a big plus for me you and him. there you go .....good point though. nice question. check out my favourites for tesla, stan meyers, cold fusion and green DIY links. peace

  • @weetiewildrose #1 You're calculating 12KW/h in the wrong manner. The 180w is from solar panels producing DC current (usually 36v), that's not 180w @120v AC! You need to get more info on solar ;) #2 Hydrogen is stored to be used in winter or when bad weather won't allow solar to produce enough to support the house. Of course because the house was bilt with high efficiency Mike only needs 2KW/h for it. Even then, in winter you will need a fuel cell to power and heat the house.

  • @freakqnc #1 I am not calculating anything wrong AC watts will be DC watts multiplied by the efficiency of the Inverter used, lets say 95% would equal 11.4KW only a minor drop, You can look that up if you like....#2 If the house is such high efficiency then I'm sure 11.4KW of solar panels would still put out enough power in lower light levels.

  • @weetiewildrose I'm guessing the house isn't insulated, which would negate the need for about 90% of the power used to heat/cool it. The lengths people will go to, to avoid insulation amazes me. Batts in the ceiling, double glazing for the windows. Proper seals. Walls might need another layer, but yeah.

  • @weetiewildrose He is storing hydrogen for later use. I believe the point of his project is energy independence especially from foreign oil. I'm glad he is doing it..rather then blowing his money on foriegn oil to travel and nuclear power. I don't think he is trying to make money here. Looks like he has plenty now. Maybe in the future this system could be commercialized to benefit humanity.

    I hope so too, but hardly see it happening within our lifetime, which sucks! what he has done, is possible and everybody can do it. This is the definition of freedom, and unfortunately the greed of the rich and secret societies will be the reason for holding a tight grip on humanity to not let it break free (maybe for centuries). I would dedicate my life to this kind of project, and just working to build it and see it come together, I'd surely be the happiest man in the world.

  • Wouldn't the storage density of a metal hydride tank be far superior to these propane tanks? I have seen 1000L Metal Hydride tanks that are 12 inches long and 4 inches in diameter.

  • @RedMarineNex 240 is not uncommon for high power utilities... I live in a condo and we have a 240v line for the Thru-wall AC systems and HVAC units installed in the apartments. Sadly no geothermal here.

  • his set up is roughly around 250,000$, ask yourself if you can afford this. Although it is a great setup if it was 50k this is simply not going to solve the energy crisis when we have an even bigger financial crisis at our homes everyday.

I once worked for a Vancouver, BC, Canada distributor of Swagelok fittings (seen in this clip) and later a manufacturer and distributor of HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) equipment. That is what I did for a living, but felt it was the wrong track and built a passive solar, conserver home on 9 acres at Victoria, B.C. that is now part of a residential development...

    absolutely - a solarH system that one of my professors is working on collects both oxygen and hydrogen - they're both extremely useful elements. also, the system he is working on is a smaller, single unit about the size of a solar hot water collector panel. much less cumbersome. unfortunately, these systems are all about <1% efficient. ideally, we would be aiming for 10% efficiency. in terms of cost, we're looking at the cost of these systems reaching parity with petrol around 2020.

  • True and false, @zensorship. Technology cost is constantly decreasing and efficiency is increasing.

    It is still plenty of people who have the luck of living in their own house and are rich enough to buy.

    The problem is they think oil is forever as well as their purchase power. Thus, they prefer spending in big cars or other expensive goods rather than spending in smart technologies to support a better environmnent and secure an autonomous energy/water supply.

  • @SpeedMetal4635 The price of the panels varies. I have a panel that cost me $18. It doesn't produce much power though. 3 watts, 12volts, 170 mA. Higher wattage panels will cost more. Enough solar panels to supply an average homes power needs would cost thousands of dollars. But, you don't have to power your whole home to take advantage of solar power. I am starting with a small setup. Just to have some power during a power outage so I can run an LED light and charge my phone.

  • I work for a high end custom home builder in the bay area of CA. We have done the geo thermal and a lot homes with solar panels. We were looking into the hydrogen fuel cells and found that it would take 15-20 years at current costs to get your money back from the system once... mind you that the overall benefit is that it isn't incurring any costs except maint. unlike standard systems that need maint. and power as well. No one has jumped for it yet, but perhaps this video will help.

  • Hi Mike, good work, if Solar Cells were 100% efficiant, the world would use them on every home, UK is not as bright for the sun power as your country I think

    I guess the cost of your system runs to many 10,000's $ far from the reach of normal DIY projects, but for sure your system, is one which we all dream of having, wish I had the land and money for such a system at my home, but I would recon maybe it would have cost me £100,000 at least !

  • @zensorship We have had this technology in Europe for years, I studied it for my Engineering degree. I designed a system to produce hydrogen from a wind turbine. The economics just don't add up. This guy is like a bloke who owns a collection of Ferrari's, he does it because he has the money and he likes the cars. Most every day people just can't afford it. Go and look up the cost of a UPS, electrolyser, inverters and PV. If this technology is not affordable by the masses it is nothing.

    The hydrogen thing is not the point though.

    The solar is. Even without the hydrogen storage system he would be basically set for the whole summer, with no need to access the power grid. You can just pump the eccess power back into the grid if you so choose, and that would be detracted from your bill. The only real investment are the solar panels and in the long run they are really worth it.

  • @johnlane1001 It has to start somewhere. Some one has to have a little vision and see what could be and not what is right now. When cars first came out they were a luxury item that could only be afforded by rich people. It took the vision of Henry Ford, and others to make cars affordable to everyone.

  • True and false, @zensorship. Technology cost is constantly decreasing and efficiency is increasing.

    It is still plenty of people who have the luck of living in their own house and are rich enough to buy.

    The problem is they think oil is forever as well as their purchase power. Thus, they prefer spending in big cars or other expensive goods rather than spending in smart technologies to support a better environmnent and secure an autonomous energy/water supply.
