@YellowBoy21 1 more thing I've noticed, is that it doesn't ask me which Windows installation I'd like to log onto. Also, it doesn't ask me for an Admin password. It just goes to the 3rd step in the process, but instead of it showin' "C:\WINDOWS>," it shows "C:\>" and I can't change it.
boot from usb is misssing.....everytime i hit ctrl+alt+del it restarts and the same display as usual.... saying NTLDR is missing press ctrl+alt+del....any other way to fix it?
hi, i followed all of the directions exactly...but at the end i hit exit, and then remove the cd, and it reboots back into the "ntldr is compressed" message again. The only differences i see are that i used a windows xp media center cd on a windows xp home edition laptop; does this make a difference? thanjs

Very nice tutorial. Easy to follow as always. My friend had this error a few days ago on a Windows XP machine. I could have fixed it (using this method) but he got a family member to do it. When the computer came back, shortcuts were gone, sound drivers non existent and a few other things which just weren't right at all. I can't help but wonder what that person did to fix the error. Anyway, long story short, this is very much a coincidence that you uploaded this video today =)
Musicarta when installing windows, the icons don't show unless you select them. Drivers aren't installed unless you install them. If you knew , and i'm not sure that you did, but if you did know how to fix it you should've told your friend "COPY NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM to C:\". he'd have written it down, he couldn't do it but could've asked his family member to Instead, the family member didn't know about that and did a reinstallation/repair installation.
@bolius1 I realise this yes. The family member definitely reinstalled Windows and then copied the contents of the hard drive back over again. I was connected remotely with my friends computer tonight and started getting shortcuts back. I re-installed drivers. The sound card was the main one. Some programs will need to be reinstalled of course though. By the way, by the time I knew about it, the computer had already been sent to the family member unfortunately. Thanks for the feedback.
is there anyway to do it without a CD.. Help Please

If this worked, thats fantastic. If not, please take the time to do the following:
Boot from the XP install CD, get to a recovery console (follow the prompts) in the 1st line, type "cd c:\" without quotation marks and press enter.
,then type "attrib -c ntldr" without quotation marks and press enter. type "exit" and reboot!
