I used to go to a babysitter a long time ago, and she had an NES with a ton of games ad one of them was this game. No one there could get very far, but one girl who every now and the would come over could beat this game easily, this was back before you could look it up on the internet or look at a guide. She was annoying but was a genius when it came to videogames, I remember watching her play the Dragon Warrior/Quest games and she knew every thing about them. I to this day can't beat it.
Too bad games like this are scoffed at in this day and age thanks to Gamefaqs and cheats. Back then you didn't have these type of resources and it made the experience that more amazing when you figured it out. Telling your friends that you did it was an accomplishment and the feeling was that of quite an adventure.
What an obscure game, I am really surprised at its gameplay mechanics, but I will be honest, when Rob went into the explanation of the orb puzzle, I think I may want to avoid this game (unless I use a walkthrough as suggested) LOL :)
I remember seeing this game in Nintendo Power back in the day.... I always thought it looked neat but never tried it!! Magic of Sheherezade (spelling??) is another game like that for me.
@wiiner11 i did watch the entire thing before i commented, i just had the volume kinda low so it was hard to hear the music :P HCG always plays the best music in the background- always very 90's-ish arcade-y, i love it!
I have this game and I loved it. I never got the chance to beat it, but maybe I should. The tomb exploring was a positive for me, but the simplistic fight system was a half and half for me."You can only fight the next monster, after you level up."
@Quirkification all jokes aside, why don't johnny and rob make a video showing themselves (with pics of course) talking about their gaming memories? they already do it but it is just talking. they should include visuals like the street (google maps should have it), their childhood friends and family in pics, and of course objects that they held dear as kids. this would make for an amazing episode!
I remember how hard this game was. I test games on emulators before I buy them as far as retro games go. I played this and could get past one of the puzzles, so I quit! But it is great. I'll definitely pick it up one day!
Despite enjoying many dungeon style games (Dungeon Masters, Shadowgates, Stonekeep etc). I could never really get into this game. Owning just the cart may have been the reason since I never knew there was a map with clues.
Man, I'm glad this vid came up on my sub box. i fucking love these videos! but for a sec i was like "Holy shit!I mustve missed an episode!" but nvm...overall love this vid :D
Awesome review:D That puzzle sounds absolutely brutal@_@ Good ole Falcom though:D It's always really interesting to see some of their other lesser known titles see releases outside of Japan. Keep up the excellent work:D Have a good day!
It's a good look at retro games that maybe kind of obscure to everyone else instead of the super popular typical ones that are always shown, good stuff.
I have to be honest this sounds like a terrible game. Even for the time it was released. But, still a good review of a game I had never heard of till now.
Hm, the INFAMOUS Falcom, eh? I thought they overall had a pretty good reputation. They made some very good games like the Ys series, Dragon Slayer series and my favorite MegaCD game Popful Mail!
I'm just kidding, I suppose he just mispronounced the word famous.
But just for the sake of clarity:
Famous means well known.
Infamous also means well known BUT well known for having done bad things.
Bit of a differance if you ask me.
Other than that, great review of a game I've never played!
@warylv He prolly meant they are infamous for making games that have challenging puzzles or are somewhat difficult. Since many actually find that a bad thing.
Well, maybe your'e right... I don't know. English is really only my second language so maybe I misinterpreted his tone of voice when he said it or something?
@warylv I don't know either Lol... For all I know you could be right. Just trying to give Robman a bit more credit. But yeah. Cause Robman is Awesome.
Good stuff Rob Man, nice review. I am trying to get Mega Man/Rock Man Power & Fighter for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. It is the handheld version of the arcade cabinet you have. HAHA I'm going for the scaled down version. Interested to play an all Mega Man boss fight game! AS IF THEY AREN'T HARD ENOUGH ALREADY LOL!
Just beat last window on the ds and was so glad to be able to jump onto google when I got really stuck on one puzzle, some gaming puzzles used to be so frustrating back in the day and even though it used to be rewarding to do it all yourself I like havin online help when I need it. No more leavin games tht are to difficult. Great video Robman :)
I often complain that modern games guide players through far too much with endless tutorials, sign posting of important locations and linear design where you can't fail to do the right thing, but this game looks like it goes too far in the opposite direction.
Cool, I didn't know this was developed by Falcom. I remember seeing the box at the video rental store but never checked it out. Not sure that I have the patience I once had to make it through a game like that though. Great review!
cool! love the art, old anime style and all. This game seems pretty well made for the time. Still, I can't play games that expect me to solve terribly obscure mysteries with almost no clues hahaha
Cool review Robman I definitely enjoyed it. Looks like a fun game and Shadowgate was the first thing that came to mind for me. I will have to look for this game and give it a try. But I will be using a walkthrough for sure.
Fantastic review. Robman and Johnny both speak in a way that don't bore you. That's how I'm able to not only watch these reviews and videos, but be genuinely interested in what you guys are talkin about. Great stuff!
@AxiomofDiscord well this game is less about damage taken and leveling up than it is about puzzle solving. it somewhat reminds me a bit of chrono trigger...maybe because of the prehistoric era and going back and forth to solve one storyline or part...time to pull out chrono trigger DS! :D
Oh man! This game was amazing. The atmosphere, the spooky characters....
It had an interface that borrowed from ICOM, traditional RPG's, and those cool point clickers like Secret of Monkey Island. It was woven together nicely!
I would WAY rather videos like this, just talking with footage of the game instead of FX driven, story line stuff. I would prefer if you and Jonny did shorter, more simple videos like this rather than wait for a more scripted, flashy episode, anyway, much love, keep em coming!
