  • The problem with this game its the same problem of the world, excess of dumb people, just look at the visualizations of myst, and compare them lets see... to Kesha, for example... its sad, but true...

  • How is Cyan worlds still in profit? They only make Iphone apps now of their former glory. Why not release a new myst game? Would make them a few squids.

  • @tobler88

Myst V as seen here, kinda put a cap on the series known as Myst. Plus, the company Cyan Worlds has been having alot of money-based difficulties. They have had to lay off, rehire and layoff staff repeatedly to keep the company out of bankruptcy. It's a shame, had they not closed the series at five, they would've been better off now then they really are.

  • why did catherine die? and wat relations are gehn, the evil guy from exile and did we ever meet his grandma?

  • @Tiddlefish Atrus' grandmother, Anna (Ti'ana) died before the start of the series. You can learn more about her in the novels. Saavedro has no family connections to any of the characters in the Myst games. He was from Narayan, not D'ni. Catherine was Rivenese, not D'ni so she died of old age. Myst V takes place about 200 years after Myst.

  • @Scratchmyears but if it is 200 years after myst, why is yeesha still alive? do they have such unnaturally long lives? if so it must seem like eras ago that she was part of the plot in myst 4, or when atrus ever wrote these ages.

  • @Tiddlefish D'ni live for centuries. Average D'ni lifespan is between 3 and four centuries. Yeesha has D'ni blood so she was gifted with the long lifespan. It's also possible that her mastery of time and space as a result of being "The Grower" allowed her to live for so long.

  • @Scratchmyears anna and ti'ana are not the same person. ti'anna is atrus' grandmother and yeesha's great grandmother, i thought that too when i read the book of atrus and was left a little confused, but in myst 5 yeesha says ti'anna's her great grandmother so :-S lol

  • @jellybumfruitcakes To my understanding, Anna and Ti'ana ARE the same person. Anna was a surface dweller (aka normal person living on the surface of our world) and upon discovering D'ni and meeting Aitrus (Atrus's grandfather) she was given the D'ni name Ti'ana.

  • This game was so heartbreaking I have yet to finish. Gah. I miss Catherine and Atrus, and it's sad to see the bright girl in MYST IV so...grim. Too much like her brothers. No spoilers -- I'll finish sooner or later -- but I think MYST IV is perhaps my favorite after Riven, because the good people and the magic outweigh the grim.

  • @LadyRevan7 Ubisoft refused to let Uru separate itself from Myst. Even the original Uru was officially titled "Uru: Ages Beyond Myst" mostly because Myst was an established name and Uru was completely nonsensical. It was not Cyan's choice to call it Myst V it was Ubisoft's. Thankfully Cyan is completely independent again and Myst Online: Uru Live is in the process of being open sourced. It's free :D See you in the cavern maybe.

  • @Scratchmyears Cyan is terminally ill. Sadly what i just said is true.

  • @SpankbankINC Cyan currently has a partnership with Creative Kingdoms working on Magiquest Online. They are also developing games for the iphone not least of which is iRiven. And they are also maintaining Uru via donations. The team is certainly small but they are in no danger of going under any time soon.

  • waaaaaaaaaaah! T-T

when my dad and i started playing this together (we played the entire series together over the years) i couldn't believe that everyone was dead!

not to mention i couldn't understand half of what Atrus was saying..

and then Yeesha comes in and I don't know what the hell she's talking about..

haven't finished the game yet, but i saw the remains of Myst island in a video here on Youtube. that's when my heart really broke.. :(

  • Did you play Uru? That should have given you an idea that this is over a hundred and fifty years after Myst IV.

  • my dad and i started to play it, but it didn't run very well.

still, if they're going to make an ending to the Myst series, they should have the stranger. i guess they wanted to combine the two (original Myst series and Uru) but i just don't think it's fair to end it without the stranger..or at least a descendant of him/her..they could work with Dr whoever-you-play-in-this-game

  • Well, this isn't the continuation of the Stranger's story, it's the end of Atrus' story and the D'ni's story reaching a new point. Atrus story ended near the end of his life, far beyond the Stranger's lifespan.

  • @Mewzard well then they should make a game of the end of Atrus' story..with the stranger and NOT CGI or whatever

  • @LadyRevan7 Cyan never wanted ANY sequels to Riven. Riven was the original end and then Uru was going to be an entirely separate entity but set in the Myst Universe to use the linking books/D'ni etc. When Uru Live was canceled by Ubisoft Cyan decided to make two expansions to take Live content waiting to be released and make it single-player. What was left became Myst V which is why it runs in the Uru game engine and why it features the Bahro and the D'ni city. It was never intended to be Myst

  • then why call it Myst 5? i guess they wanted to end everything in one game, it's just not very satisfying

oh well, thanks for the info :)

  • ='(

  • Heartbreaking if you liked Atrus, I always considered him an arrogant, Self-centered windbag.

  • And...a really, really, REALLY bad father!

  • Yeah there is that.

  • Where to find this video?

  • godz i wanna go get lit and play the series al over again T.T

  • It is kind of depressing looking back on the series.

  • I am confused by all your comments guys. bear with me if I'm terribly misunderstanding everything. But first, you talk as if this all is real! Cyan and the Millers were hired to make games of that history? No, this is all fiction. A great story, and great games, but fiction. So what do you mean when you talk about cyan and rand and robyn miller etc.? did they include themselves in the games as characters?

  • exactly

  • Rand Miller was the founder of Cyan with Robyn. They're bothers, and Yes, Rand played Atrus in the series. That's who you hear at the beginning.

The first two games of the series had character recorded with realtime film.

  • @Bendyournoodle Cyan was written into the story of Myst Online. I like to think of everything completely in-character. I met Rand in the D'ni cavern when it was still open :P

  • I was trying to explain the reallife connections to the series. Sorry for ruining the mood. ;)

  • You still play as the stranger in Myst 5 imho. Yeesha pulls someone with the wisdom to finish the quest, and it ends up being the person who helped her familiar all along. It's why when she sees you she says "You.... of course..."

  • Myst 5 takes place roughly 200 years after Myst 1. It's what's left of Uru Live adapted to a single-player game and is therefore a sequel not to Myst, but to Uru's first incarnation. The main character is Dr. Richard Watson, missing leader of the DRC whom Yeesha had taken on The Journey at the close of the original beta. She knew him and he knew her which is why she recognized him. I'll link the chatlog where he confirmed it when he came back if you still don't believe me.

  • how did Catherine die?

  • Katran was of Rivenese descent and so was not blessed with the long life that D'ni blood imparts on its people. Atrus is the son of Gehn and Keta, both of D'ni descent though Keta's bloodline is unknown. Gehn was half D'ni being the son of Aitrus and Ti'ana (Anna) Therefore, Atrus was blessed with the long life of the D'ni and Katran passed on of old age. Myst V took place in 2005, nearly 3 centuries after the unknown stranger first saved Atrus on Myst.

  • Poor Atrus, losing everything. How could he endure all that pain and loss?

seriously, this is a heartbreaking introduction, it really makes you feel for Atrus like i did.

  • This is the saddest of the intros. Atrus sounds so tired and restless, as if he lost so much hope. I wonder what he means by 'ending his useless waiting'. I know he died, but how?

  • Atrus did not die. He went on to Releeshahn to be with the new D'ni people. He ended his waiting for Yeesha to come home and abandoned Tomahna

  • I think he wants to DIE, and by moving to a better place, he means HEAVEN. Yes, this is heart-breaking. Btw, why is it that almost every musical tune for URU is sad-sounding, and even more so for the K'veer area of Myst Online Uru Live. PS: RAWA claims that he's the player in this game, but I think that information is just bogus! >:P

  • You're confusing RAWA with Dr. Richard Watson. They are not the same person, though they share the same name. Richard Watson was the leader of the D'ni Restoration Council (DRC) He went missing after Phil Henderson vanished in the Tokotah Plaza the first time the cavern closed. He found Yeesha and followed her words to learn of the tablet. After returning from Releeshahn he contacted Cyan and they used his story for the plot of Myst V.

  • At least that's the IG story. I always thought that while Cyan made superb games, when they tried to "explain" how they got the information in Uru they didn't do a very good job. "Oh, we at Cyan have known about D'ni all the time, we found Catherine's journals and made games off of them". Doesn't sound very convincing. I was quite happy with the idea of "suspended disbelief", and that every little detail didn't have to be explained away.

But yes, the canon story is that the player is Watson.

  • Cyan didn't just "Know" about D'ni. Elias Zandi heard of the cavern from his colleague John Loftin who discovered it while researching artifacts in the Carlsbad area in 1987. Eli contacted his friend Richard Watson who was a friend of Rand and Robyn Miller and together they made trips to the cavern to learn what they could. Journals documenting the past were used as inspiration for the games, but the truth of the story is lost to history.

  • The intro to msyt 5 is really sad. It almost made me cry.

  • That is very sad when he says i will put an end to my useless waiting i almost cried then.

  • I know what you mean.

  • Atrus should of said "and I've lost my friend as well....where ever he maybe...."

  • omg i dont want to end its so good iv been playing it since it first came out what thats like 10 years

    :(

    love it

    x

  • Is "the stranger" from the first 4 MYSTs dead?

  • Catherine's journals don't mention the stranger at all past Yeesha's childhood so we don't know what happened to him or her. We now know that it was Dr Watson who helped Yeesha unchain the bahro in myst 5. He told us himself when he returned to the cavern.

  • We can assume that the stranger is dead since Myst V happens more than a 100 years after Myst IV.

  • Unless he's conveniently of D'Ni blood.

    I think not.

  • How much sense does that make? Yeesha's still alive, and the age of the stranger is never disclosed.

I think the point of the stranger being called the stranger is so that you can believe it's yourself. I think that if I'm alive, so is he. But that's just me getting into the game.

  • or, maybe, Yeesha used her time-linking powers to save the stranger like she did with kadish in the path of the shell.

  • the stranger is simply an anonymous friend who happened to find Atrus' linking book and follow him to Myst. Atrus' family story was only one tiny part of the plot that Cyan felt would make a good game from an anonymous perspective. The nature of the stranger and what they actually did to save Atrus is unknown

  • what if the Bahro, Yeesha, or "The Maker" brought the Stranger forward in time? Huh? What do you think of that?
