Nice guitar man, and about the color: the first epiphone prophecy GX, 2008, are indeed lighter color, the darker color is from the EX with EMG pickups, later they change the colors leaving the dark cherry to the gibson loaded and black to the emg loaded.
By the way now in 2011 is discontinued, now the new model has different gibson pickups, different inlays and 4 pots, the classic les paul pots
@ivse Thank you for the info. I always wondered. I wasn't aware that the darker coloured one had EMGs at one point. Will check out the new models too.
@ivse Oh huh I see. Thanks. I watched that video before but failed to catch that detail. Nice. I definitely like the darker red myself, though both look gorgeous.
@Thawist I first thought they were demos, but as I said I saw them on sale in a webpage, can't remember if was musician's friend or something like that. I also like the dark cherry better. I'm waiting to finding it on sale, special, cheaper so I can afford it.
This guitar is awesome, my parent's finally got me this last weekend and this baby is really sick from looks to sound qualities. I'm supposed to get the LP but it is too heavy for me, I'm only 12 years old. Sound/tone quality is almost the same as what I can get from a high-end LP minus the weight. And by the way you can have a single coil sound on those 2 pups just tap the volume knob. It is a very versatile guitar plus I got this baby for $399 Canadians (yeah Canadians!). It's a steal!
@ltgoof same!!!! I have had a LP for a while and i love it. but when i walked in on this exact same sg i knew i had to have it. i also got it for $399 canadian, btw did you get it at long and mcquade?
Nice sg but its not Gibson USA Authorized. The only sg's from Epiphone that are Gibson USA Authorized are the G-400 standard 1962 sg. G-400 1966 sg. The G-400 custom sg. All the Epiphone custom shop and limited edition sg's. These are Authorized.
GUYS, Right I can't decide between this, the EMG version of this, the Les Paul version of this or the Les Paul EMG version of this, can anybody help ? thanks :)
@Smit2k11 Try them out in stores. That's the only definitive way of deciding.
I cannot tell you much about the Les Paul since I never tried it. I favor the SG because of the all access reach up to the 24th fret and the body's thinness. LP's are thick and have the heel at the back which is problematic for me since I have small hands. As for pickups it's really your call once you try them out. I picked Dirty Fingers because it's flexible and I didn't want an active guitar.
@Thawist The thing is, none of the stores near me have any of the prophecy series :/ But I'm with you on the good points about the SG, the only thing is what do passive pickups have over actives? thanks :)
@Smit2k11 I'm no expert, but actives generally have more oomph to their sound without loss due to equipment. You have greater control on your sound, but may need proper equipment to get the most control out of it (eg. remove excess noise). Batteries are also a must.
Sound also depends on what kind of active pickups you get. I'm sure you can read a lot about the EMGs Prophecies use online, or try out in-store guitars with EMGs that's close in price range. Tons of guitars have EMGs.
@Smit2k11 I just realized I read your comment wrong. XD The main thing that passives have over actives is that it doesn't need batteries. So if you are performing for example, you aren't worried about your guitar all of sudden not sounding right because the battery is dying or not making any sound at all since the battery has died. I just don't want to keep track of batteries, and I don't need the extra potential output.
@Smit2k11 Can't compare with EX since I haven't tried it. Dirty Fingers on the GX provide a lot of tonal variation even with standard amp effects, especially with the push/pull coil. General amp settings only: volume at full blast and amp distortion sound great packing a punch while able to retain tone, feedback is awesome and okay to control, cleans come in a lot of tonal variety to suit a # of styles and are very clear so every note rings out even as chords. At the end, your equipment is key.
I absolutely love the colour on this guitar

@Thawist you can see that in the review video of guitarworld magazine, is in my favorites.
And I saw in some webs with leftovers of these guitars.
By the way they had not updated the web with this series, only inside the cathalog come the new les pauls, no sign of SG's

GX version is awesome.....pickups are hot and ballsy.....no need to change batteries...coil tap with this one too.

@TheOnekobold That may be your opinion, but I highly disagree. Have you even played this guitar?
