I'd give my right arm to play like that. Of course, if I didn't have my right arm, I couldn't play like that! Saw him a couple of days ago in Mpls. His hair was gray, but didn't miss a beat. Long live Leo!
As a guitarist of 25 years, I can honestly say that - since Hendrix and Segovia are no longer around - this guy may be the greatest living musician on the planet.
@PicnicHikeMusic I've been playing for about as long and I'd have to agree. Incredible sustain, subtle syncopation.... (even in 'Rings'). Bach must be smiling in his grave.
I can't get enough of this song! I love this older video and love him doing it when he got older - maybe more so because it fits so well and he's so used to it that he's relaxed and even bounces with it, like he can't help it no matter how many times he plays it. That's infectious.
First song in this video is "Rings" (written by Eddie Reeves and Alex Harvey) and the second tune is "The Driving of the Year Nail," a Kottke original, off his '6- and 12-String Guitar' album.
Just a slight correction to your tune names......the 2nd tune is "Jack Fig" (not "Driving of the Year Nail"). But both tunes were indeed on the 6&12 album.
@superjay42 THANK YOU for the background information! I just know that he is an incredible guitarest and wordsmith. Even the covers he does have his delightful signature. And he looks like he's having a great time!
@nanabaws Oh my goodness. The light just came on. Is that the Alex Harvey of "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band" in the mid-'70s? I saw Alex and band open for Jethro Tull in the summer 1974. Thanks.
Yeah the second one is Jack Fig.

Where does one go to find talent like this today?

Love this tune. I've never heard the original but I prefer his solo version of it than where he has backing.

Leo Kottke is so mellow & smooth. He is a person who is a joy to see live. A wonderful storyteller who shares his zest for life with everyone.
Hope he makes it my way again someday soon.

Me too McLushi.
I saw Leo at Convocation Hall in Toronto about 20 years back.
This song made me profoundly sad and happy at the same moment, hard to explain.
Still gets me teary eyed.
