to teach them the skills they may have forgotten? like putting on mascara?! in what world does having an eating disorder make you forget how to put mascara on? lol
They claim to focus more on behavioural training and building social life and confidence as their website says, that is technically treating psychological issues. Behaviour training is what a therapist would use. The problem is many of these girls need someone to talk to, and should be able to see a therapist as part of their programme, someone qualified and someone who knows what they are doing. Not just someone to sit and eating with them and tell them what to eat.
So many clinics re-fed so that the patient gains weight by giving them junk food or excessive portions and then throwing them out once they are at a healthy weight. This solves nothing. You really need to know what to eat, nutrition, portions, to get back a healthy relationship with food again. Shoving food at a person isn't going to solve any problem especially junk food. So the treatment isn't entirely wrong. It is just scary they don't think you need to treat psychological issues.
Some of what they said is true. When your body gets nutrition and food it enables you to think clearer and helps recovery. And it also can help with symptons that were caused by the eating disorder such as depression that wasn't there before. So in that way they are right and they could successfully treat those that don't have deeper pyschological issues. Their programme of re-feeding by teaching them how to eat right is a good idea.
An eating disorder is a mental illness. A lot of eating disorders are coping mechanisms, not through not knowing how to eat properly or dieting, but deeper psychological issues such as having suffered some kind of abuse, bullying, pre-existing conditions such as OCD, depression, genetics...there are a lot of reasons. And you can't treat an eating disorder if those issues that lead to the eating disorder aren't worked on first.
@hypoguess no, starving itself isnt the disease, it is a symptom of the disease, and overeating can be a reverse symptom of the same illness, it can go one way or the other, I have struggled with ED for most of my life, I have seen myself at 225 pounds and have been severly underweight as well. Ive been on both ends of the ED spectrum, bulimia has costed me my teeth, self esteem and knowing how to eat a normal meal. despite what it has costed me, I am still not recovered, its very hard.
To say that this is a cure for EVERYONE with an ED is a bit of a stretch! I've been to a clinic that sort of just 'fed' me up to an acceptable weight and then threw me to the 'real' world .... I relapsed so freaking badly after it, over and over again. I felt like, all they want to do is just to fatten me up and chuck me out. Heh. I don't know, I do think that some form of counselling is always good!
@hypoguess no, famine is not a disease. however, anorexia nervosa and BED (binge-eating disorder) are mental diseases that include many other mental problems besides those that have something to do with eating. a person with anorexia is not just someone who doesn't care to eat but a person who deals with so much ! anorexia is fear of food and fear of gaining weight, it's depression and control and paranoia. this comment of yours just proves that you know nothing about eating disorders!
it's a shame that people from the other side on the earth are offered help here in sweden, but we swedes who have anorexia here and are on our deathbeds are refused becouse we are living in the "wrong" part of the country. i don't say these girls didn't deserve the help, but wtf? we're dying over here..!
too simple! while severe ED patients do need to relearn how to eat, this does not address the issues that caused them to start starving in the first place or the trauma they may experienced after. it gives them no alternate coping skills. also, i find it interesting that it cuts off right when they are going to tell the actual research numbers and details... it appears you must pay to view the rest. interesting indeed.
Looks like a good clinic. But what is the new here? Psychopharmaca meds are being used by many ED-recovery clinics all over the world... Is there something I've overlooked?
@omgnuub ... Swedish pronunciation is actually one of the better, no need to be ashamed... Ever heard Danish people speaking English? Or Japanese? Or Indian or Namibian? The list goes on...
Don't be a nuub, and stick to the topic at hand! Who cares about pronunciation when people are in risk of dying!!
they are treating something so complex as something simple. forgetting how to eat, really? how does this explain why people relapse? they forget again?
I'm so embarrassed... thank God I don't have that horrific Swedish accent! I go to international school and talking like that would have kept me in 4 years of silence..
Loling at the pronunciation of the names and places XD
this seems too simplistic..."too little food and too much exercise" is definitely part of the problem. But how does one explain the out of control urges to exercise or binge excessively? How does one explain that the girls who are desperately ill, see themselves as fat?
I think this is bull crap. I've had an eating disorder for about 3 years and I think this is complete bullshit. Recovering from an eating disorder has to be about the psychological, as well as the physical aspects. A lot of the times anorexia and blimia and te rest of the worlds unhealthy relationships with food and dieting develope without havig to do with food at all, merely a coping mechanism.
@theThunder If you change how you eat and change your life a bit ...you will change your physical aspects too .. You need only to Belive and be strong and dont listen on your feeling and thoughts !! (kognitiv)
and by the way, i know how to eat i'm a nutricionist it didn't help me to know how to eat, i started physiquiatric therapy and i've been feeling better the episodes are no so often aymore ... is not a case of being thin... is an emotional emptiness , u need to take control of something since everything seems to get out of ur hands
I don't think this is an illness they can generalize, you should live it to know what it is ... saying is not pysyquiatric is just dumb , i've been bulimic for 8 years, the environment and my way of living has made me who i am internally emotionally speaking, no genetics...
I don't agree with their way of treating these disordered people. Tracking whether or not they are eating too slowly or normally is not going to contribute to finding a cure to bulimia and anorexia. It IS a mental disorder, as the victims think they things of themselves that may not be true, which can lead to a full blown mental disorder.
i think they're idea of teaching healthy living again is really good, because some clinics only focus on gaining weight. however, they are being naive if they think that eating disorders are purely physical
I went there, it did help, I'm not cured but it DID help.. I relapsed later but I must point out that it is not in an offensive manor that they speak of the disorder.
The staff are wonderful and I made lots of friends here,
I don't get it. How can it be a genetic disease? Nobodies born with an eating disorder, it's developed over time through social comparasions and seems to have alot to do with vanity and wanting to be something your not. That's a state of mind thing isn't it??
Meowl, I think you can just be born with certain predispositions which may or may not result in the development of an eating disorder depending on your environment.
KennedyCorey-To answer your question, in order to develop anorexia one has a genetic predisposition to it. People with Huntington's or some cancers aren't born with it, but with the genetic make up to possibly contract it in the future, same for anorexia.
The media has sadly warped people's perception of the illness. It is a brain disorder not a vanity problem, I suffered for 5 years and was helped to recovery by Mandometer. I didn't want to be ill but I couldn't change w/ out lots of support.
Really? I don't know much about it. I'm glad you got better. Didn't you ever get hungry? Like wouldn't you stomach hurt when you have no food in it, or you just didnt feel it?
I believe most eating disorders are developed by the so called modeling industry. Many girls want to be like a model and when they see the super thin models they want to copy it. Naturally there would not be as many anorexic people as there are today. It all starts with willing to loose so much weight that it eventually develops it into a psychological problem.
This while most models really are naturally thin or just too young to have developed bodies yet. Most models are around the age of 14/16, you should dig deeper into the world of fashion and you'll learn.
But I do agree that some have taken it too far, Snejana Onopka, Vlada Roslyakova, Anja Rubik etc.
I believe that EDs are side effects to emotional stress. I think that Psychiatric help is needed, to find the underlying problem to help those suffering understand the reason why they feel they need that kind of control in their lives. If people don't understand why they are afraid to eat, or gain wait, they won't be able to "relearn how to eat"
I never said that you can "get rid of an eating disorder completely."
I don't believe I mentioned anything about that actually.
However, ED's are like alcoholism. You will always have an addiction to alcohol, but you have the choice not to give in. With Ed's you will always have that "temptation" some days will be stronger than others, but you have the choice not to give in.
And sometimes the only way you can make those choices, is if others support you and thus make you stronger.
Yeah, speaking on the behalf of others is very wise indeed. You have the indepth preception to make a statement about everybody who's had an ed. Your eating disorder has clearly eaten your brains away.
I think that this could help....I've had an ED for nearly 8 years...and I can honestly say that I don't know how to eat normally anymore. After so long, it's like I've forgotten what true hunger and true fullness feel like.
I'm not talking about being fat. I'm talking about having an eating disorder that screws up your body so badly you don't even know when you *should* eat, and can't recognize fullness, so either you don't stop or you don't eat enough. The full feeling is uncomfortable and strange in the early stages of recovery.
And actually, google Binge Eating Disorder or Compulsive Overeating. Those ARE EDs, though not what I was referring to.
These fucking girls need a good smack or a good lay to get rid of their fucking capricious behavior. If thety wanna starve themselves so much go to fukcing Africa and starve yourself there and die!
As a person who has been through a treatment program like that, I can argue both sides. I was diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa when I was 12, and have been hospitalized multiple times and gone through a process like that, and yet every day is a mental struggle (after five years of struggle). I did not know the appropriate portion sizes but I also think that I am always fat. I've been asking if I was fat since I was five and there is a history of anorexia in my family.
Eating disorders are a psychiatric problem. However like all mental illnesses each person can have a different cause for developing the illness, and not everyone responds to the same treatment. This program sounds like it is completely behavior based which might be good for some people, others may need psychological help in order to overcome their ED. I think a combination of cognitive and behavior therapy is best for life threatening psychiatric illnesses.
AAAH This makes me so angry! I've been to this place and they made me more sick than ever. What made me well was my therapist that THEY forbidded me to see while I was there! This place is "successful" because they make patients gain weight because they hate the place, then they go out in the world and get sick again, but they dont get in the statistics of failure!
My sister only recently came back from this clinic after 3 months and alot of money. She had been into treatment 5 times before and relapsed every time. After 6 months she is doing better than ever. Its like shes a brand new person and that personality that left us 8 years ago is gradually coming back and i love it!
different treatments work for different people. As much as I agree with you that for most, anorexia is caused by mental problems, this clinic has been able to cure very, very sick people. Everybody gets sick for a different reasons, maybe for these girls they has been more physiological than psychiatric? The study of malnutrition and eating disorders still has many questions to answer, yet it already has been proven that starvation itself maintains anorexic symptoms. Please don't be so stuck up.
wow. ive never heard of these techniques for recovery before. but anorexia NOT a mental illness?? i disagree. if there is ONE thing anorexia IS, that would be it.
im pretty sure thats exactly what i said...someone else said its not a mental illness and i said i disagree. the major thing anorexia is, is a mental illness. dont call me stupid.
To say that anorexia is not a mental illness is a new way of looking at the illness and it seems to be very popular and many well known researchers and phycologist are sticking with it. (I myself don't want to comment on it because I really don't have the qualification to do that)
Interesting concept. I usually eat alone (I find it too humiliating to eat around others as I have food issues) but last week I found myself at a dinner table with three other people. They chose me to dish up my food first and everyone was watching. I nearly cried with panic. I had no idea how much food to take and what was considered normal. My disorder is a secret and I was terrified they would all find out or judge me. I remember staring at my plate and thinking how absurd this was.
Hey, thanks! What about street signs, phone books, etc.? I was in Japan before and honest to God I might as well have been on Mars; I could not ask for help, read the signs, make a phone call, nothing, and it might sound trivial but it was actually scary as hell feeling so isolated and illiterate. Thank you....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you mean to sweden?. I live here
well we have to many muslims in our country, but the serdish people do speak english exept if they are 65+ or under 12
but if u live here really try to learn swedish since it`s much easier to get around, yes people speak english, but personally it would be boaring living in a countrey if I can for example: read the signs, read the newspapper and so on
I've heard about this clinic, and my mom ordered some information about it, a while ago. For some people I now this program works. But not everybody started their eating disorder after a diet. It may contribute to it, but I don't believe it's the reason why I got sick. Also, to get rid of all anti-depressants will not be wise for everybody. Maybe in time, but not right away.
That is Fucking rediculous. Not a fucking mental illness? yes cuz we just choose to fucking slowly kill ourselves. this fucking pisses me off. I have suffered for years, and if it was as simple as just eating, i would be "cured" by now, fucking stupid docotrs.
this is interesting - though i'm not sure i like the fact that it tends to stigmatize mental illnesses as a result - it's sad that to lose that designation is so freeing. but i'm glad the treatment is a success in many cases.
Basically, they discussed how labeling eating disorders as a mental illness is stigmatizing. Then they said that getting rid of that designation is much better, so that it's not stigmatized. So basically, it's ok to leave the stigma of mental illness and not care about it if you can escape it. It's like saying, good - people with anorexia aren't ill or crazy like the real mentally ill, who deserve the stigma.
Skills? Applying makeup. What an irony.

I think that this could help....I've had an ED for nearly 8 years...and I can honestly say that I don't know how to eat normally anymore. After so long, it's like I've forgotten what true hunger and true fullness feel like.
anacookie5 2 years ago 23
@anacookie5 Beeing fat is not a ED. Thats just lazyness. I its that u ment.
hjula87 1 year ago
@hjula87
no...I never said anything like that...?
I'm not talking about being fat. I'm talking about having an eating disorder that screws up your body so badly you don't even know when you *should* eat, and can't recognize fullness, so either you don't stop or you don't eat enough. The full feeling is uncomfortable and strange in the early stages of recovery.
And actually, google Binge Eating Disorder or Compulsive Overeating. Those ARE EDs, though not what I was referring to.

This makes sense: all the magazines and ads in the back of the said magazines teach them how to diet. These doctors teach them how to eat.

Its like shes a brand new person and that personality that left us 8 years ago is gradually coming back and i love it!

anorexia & bulimia ARE.. mental illness!!! ass hoe!!
fairykt19 3 years ago
different treatments work for different people.

To say that anorexia is not a mental illness is a new way of looking at the illness and it seems to be very popular and many well known researchers and phycologist are sticking with it. (I myself don't want to comment on it because I really don't have the qualification to do that)

it so much a mental illness if you have an ED.

Thank you....
ngfxoxo 3 years ago
The street signs are all in swedish except for the stop signs, why; I really dont know :)
The phone books are in swedish but you can look it up on the web so that's no problem.
Etc. is cool to, just ask, and people will answer politely and to the best of their ability.
I wish you wonderful weather and all the fun Sweden has to offer.

but if u live here really try to learn swedish since it`s much easier to get around, yes people speak english, but personally it would be boaring living in a countrey if I can for example: read the signs, read the newspapper and so on

Ohyra.

akumie 3 years ago
AttentionErnst 3 years ago
akumie 3 years ago
Kolla upp Oum Kalthoum. :)
AttentionErnst 3 years ago
akumie 3 years ago
akumie 3 years ago
akumie 3 years ago
AttentionErnst 3 years ago
akumie 3 years ago
AttentionErnst 3 years ago
akumie 3 years ago

I've heard about this clinic, and my mom ordered some information about it, a while ago. For some people I now this program works. But not everybody started their eating disorder after a diet. It may contribute to it, but I don't believe it's the reason why I got sick. Also, to get rid of all anti-depressants will not be wise for everybody. Maybe in time, but not right away.

That is Fucking rediculous. Not a fucking mental illness? yes cuz we just choose to fucking slowly kill ourselves. this fucking pisses me off. I have suffered for years, and if it was as simple as just eating, i would be "cured" by now, fucking stupid docotrs.
ellybean73 3 years ago 6
this is interesting - though i'm not sure i like the fact that it tends to stigmatize mental illnesses as a result - it's sad that to lose that designation is so freeing. but i'm glad the treatment is a success in many cases.
KungFu17 4 years ago
I didn't see how it stigmatized mental illness. Did I miss something?
happyquails 4 years ago
Basically, they discussed how labeling eating disorders as a mental illness is stigmatizing. Then they said that getting rid of that designation is much better, so that it's not stigmatized. So basically, it's ok to leave the stigma of mental illness and not care about it if you can escape it. It's like saying, good - people with anorexia aren't ill or crazy like the real mentally ill, who deserve the stigma.
KungFu17 4 years ago
This program is truly a cure!
There is also a clinic in Australia and San Diego and I am now recovered and in remission only after 4 months.
