@1IIIIIIIIII1 everytime a President commits troops on foreign soil in order to engage with a sworn enemy, he is, in essence, signing off to kill not just anyone, but Americans. It's framed however as "sacrifice" worthy of a "noble" goal or cause. It is untenable for a President to avoid or to be in control enough of the world to stand down from such tragic realities. Kennedy mitigated this unfortunate situation whereas LBJ created an obscene monstrosity.

I remember him, he was my first hero. I felt my life change in Nov 1963. Now 48 years later, I cannot feel any different. Oh how I miss him, and the world that we lost when we left him behind. @chelxeaty I think so. I listened to and saw a version of this recording pre-you tube era, and it captioned the children part. Kennedy asks about the seasons to Jr's responses as "Because it's Autumn" "Because it's winter" and so forth. JFK asks Caroline to say something about your horses and she says "Your horses!"

Actually the split in the democratic party to which you are referring occured in the 1880's over the carpet bagging issue. There was another minor shakeup in the 1930's.

@Firestar5000 Kennedy is my favorite President, but not because, as historians all agree, he was one of "the best". They give him mediocre or above average marks. What this doesn't address however, was how important his Presidency was. His time was one of the most difficult ever as a chief executive, and it required delicate handling and leadership that only he was uniquely suited for. He got the hard work out of the way in time for LBJ who pissed it all away over Vietnam anyway.

Lets get one motherfucking thing straight here, right off the bat. I Nixon were president in 1961, he would not have stood up to the joint chiefs of staff during the bay of pigs. U.S. forces would have been committed, Cuba would have fallen, the U.S.S.R. would have retaliated by invading west Berlin, the missiles would have flown and we would not be having this chat. JFK was a man among boys. Kiss that.

Nixon was more liberal while JFK was more conservative (opposite now a days between Dems and Repubs) but Nixon didn't take crap from anyone either despite his Liberalism. There is no way of knowing that the Soviets would have invaded West Berlin, either.

He was the last president to actually do the work. LBJ tried to but wasn't smart enough and relied on advisors (ie vietnam). Nixon had the ability but used that ability in other directions. Ford dunce. Carter good intentioned but not brilliant really. Reagan the CEO presidency begins. Clinton tried to revive JFK but too much of govt already by the 90s ran itself. Bush--agenda driven full time campaigner president. Obama--will need to wait on more books to fully evaluate....

He didn't so much order a coup but rather failed to stop it. Rogue agencies and such ran themselves back then (and probably still do). JFK used tapes to elucidate situations and as "homework." His successors used them to bait and trap and use as evidence in revisionist history ie LBJ's rant on JFK getting thugs to kill Diem. Not true. JFK asked Lodge to give Diem refuge if it came to that. Lodge was stonewalling and possibly working with the agency and vietnamese generals.

@pat442389 You can't be serious. Kennedy ranks as the 4th worst President of the 20th Century. The only ones who supercede him on this ignominious list are Harding, Hoover, and Nixon. With the exception of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Kennedy is all myth and no accomplishment. It's too bad Humphrey didn't have a rich father to buy votes for him in West Virginia. If he had he would have won the nomination and been a great progressive President.

JFK was supposed to have been assassinated in Chicago on the same day Diem was assassinated in Vietnam. The Chicago plot was uncovered and four gunmen were arrested and never heard of again. JFK was supposed to have been in Chicago on the same day Diem was assassinated in Vietnam but the trip was cancelled f at the last moment.

A patsy named Thomas Arthur Vallee was also taken into custody. The Chicago plot was a carbon copy of the assassination in Dallas 18 days later.
