When I heard about this cover, I imagined QOTSA turning this song into a sludged-out rocker, but this is cool too. The chorus and riffs have this eerie element to them which you hear in a lot of QOTSA's best songs, which is why I think this one would sound good in their trademark style as well as in this more stripped-down arrangement.

First of all, this cover is absolutely shameful in comparison to the original. Also, Josh Homme CLEARLY makes negative gestures in reference to Elliott Smith, and then has a little giggle about it.

I'm gonna take the side of the much more gifted musician here, which is Elliott Smith, by far.

I did like QOTSA......until I witnessed this disgraceful video. A damn shame too, I'll never be able to listen to their music again without cringing.

I agree that Elliott's is better not only because his voice fits it better (Elliott is a better singer in my opinion to begin with), but my take on the cover was that it was great to hear a full bad do it with a kick drum, bass, harmony vocals (which may or may not be to your taste)....none of which is available to hear in the original.

The electric guitar and drums coming in early is pretty cool, but this guy really lacks the emotion that Elliott sings with, which is what makes him such a great singer in the first place. this is a good look into how a studio version could have sounded full band. josh was technically a contemporary of elliott's and i feel that probably gives him more leeway to cover this song than say, sufijan stevens.

with that said, i like how qotsa put their own spin on it but didnt deviate too much. normally i hate when big bands cover artists that may not have necessarily been as big as them, but this was really well done.
