When I heard about this cover, I imagined QOTSA turning this song into a sludged-out rocker, but this is cool too. The chorus and riffs have this eerie element to them which you hear in a lot of QOTSA's best songs, which is why I think this one would sound good in their trademark style as well as in this more stripped-down arrangement.
@Blackmilk81 dude the white wedding cover was awesome i love it best cover of the song in my opinion but back to this song amazing cover best cover ive come across of this song
If you don't like or respect the cover then don't listen to it and move on. If you do, then just listen and enjoy. Arguing over it won't make the original/cover better or worse.
First of all, this cover is absolutely shameful in comparison to the original. Also, Josh Homme CLEARLY makes negative gestures in reference to Elliott Smith, and then has a little giggle about it.
I'm gonna take the side of the much more gifted musician here, which is Elliott Smith, by far.
I did like QOTSA......until I witnessed this disgraceful video. A damn shame too, I'll never be able to listen to their music again without cringing.
@Bendrix27 Anybody who professes to be an Elliott Smith fan should know he didn't cut his wrists, so I think the gesture is more in reference to the fans of Elliott Smith, or to the movie "The Royal Tenenbaums", where Luke Wilson tries to kill himself to Elliott Smith.
Also, keep in mind that when you're on stage and trying to make people laugh, occasionally, you say something that bombs. And if you can't dig music because of your interpretation of one gesture the frontman made... You're sad.
@Bendrix27 The only reason I even know who Elliott is and like his music is because of Josh covering this song. He was making a stupid joke with the audience and he obviously respects his music if he was willing to cover it you dimwit.
@Bendrix27 Am I allowed to cover this on my guitar within the privacy of my own home? I'm just curious seeing as you are the authority on these things.
I'm a massive fan of both Elliott Smith and qotsa, and I gots to say, it's so so refreshing to hear a good cover, they really did him justice here, which would be difficult due to Elliott's distinctly beautiful, whispery vocals.
This is one of those moments where my heart stops and I remember, that's why I became a musician.
Despite liking Elliott's version more for the fact that he himself lived those nightmares and wrote the song, this is an outstanding cover of one of the greatest songs ever penned. Thank you for this spin on a timeless song.
@WithoutTheFezOn See I disagree, they didn't really spin anything, it's just QOTSA playing music Elliott Smith wrote. I'd prefer to hear it from the person who actually knew the reason why it was written like that. Plus, Elliott Smith's singing style is way better for this kind of music, QOTSA have the voices of cock rockers, it really doesn't fit. Anyway, my point is, they brought nothing new to the table and slightly adulterated the original, which by the way is available to listen to already
@redunderthebed4 Though my post is shorter than yours, I didn't really say anything different from you. I agree that Elliott's is better not only because his voice fits it better (Elliott is a better singer in my opinion to begin with), but my take on the cover was that it was great to hear a full bad do it with a kick drum, bass, harmony vocals (which may or may not be to your taste)....none of which is available to hear in the original.
Some serious amounts of fuckers on here, QOTSA did this as a tribute to him, they're way of paying respects to him and obviously you can never beat Elliott's verson.
The West is converting millions of BLACK MONKEYS in Africa & YELLOW ASIANS by taking advantage of their poverty, ignorance and illiteracy. The Muslims are converting our Caucasian WHITES. One day the smart intelligent West will become Muslims and Africa will become Christians, than what happens?
Holy crap. I had no idea they covered this song. Elliott Smith is one of my absolute favorites. This is a really good cover, but no one can touch Elliott Smith.
i think FutonCat is right. The electric guitar and drums coming in early is pretty cool, but this guy really lacks the emotion that Elliott sings with, which is what makes him such a great singer in the first place. Also, the dynamics are kinda all-over-the-place, whereas Elliott's are perfect. Still not a bad cover, but not as good at all
@ihatemalus its funny because ive heard both versions about a million times, and i actually like this version more... dont get me wrong, elliot smith is incredible, volumes of great music, but queens did a great job on this one

HA! Umm, yeah I'm well aware of that. But the way he used it in that sentence makes no sense AT ALL! Not to mention it's "fake concerns IS.." Either way, I'm right you're wrong.

Why do people think covering is taking an assault or trying to make it better? Its a tribute and a salute to the artists and one another.
No artist would cover to make it better but to give the original song credit...
