Angles, Saxons, Jutes & Frisians came from our shores too -

and we still have remarkably similar languages to E., if you look at

core E - Anglo Saxon / Germanic - , which constitutes around 70 %

of the words in everyday E conv.

Even now it's as if we "by magic" already know half the basic words and

the elementary grammar, when we start to learn E and don't have to think

very much - always a good thing (en god ting!) ;-)

I'm pretty uneducated in all this altho mate I count them in too because really, the English are a mixed tribe of Nordics, Normans, Saxons etc. There is no such thing as an English race but rather it's a unity of different northern European tribes. Thx for this and if you have any info on it i would appreciate a PM with links as we don't really get taught any of this at school. It's all about multi cultralism nowadays and trying to cover up our real heritage :(

@29Gixxer dont forget that the english mixture is also infused with a great deal of original british blood of the pre-roman brits - it isn't a case of black or white (ie: saxon invasions/displacement vs saxon rule and cultural victory) it is ofcourse multiple shades of grey... it's a bit of both! saxons/angles/jeutes were known to brits through their role as mercenaries for romans and even before then through trade etc, some tribes would have accepted saxon rule without fight, others would not!?

@Bjowolf2 yes it's true - first i thought shit those bloody scandanavians must be so intelligent, have such a good school system - they always speak english so well (better than most english) haha now i see that the languages are so simliar - just take a walk in the city of york and the closeness of the cultures is immediately apparent - haha it must be bit of both as we all no scandanavian society has high living standard and great social care and education etc - you have it right, good govern!

Great - glad you are aware of this. It has always fascinated & puzzled me ever since I started learning E.

Why are all these words & many bits of basic grammar so similar. Once you know what to look for or

see through rather, you can't help noticing all the time. Just little shifts like -k -> -g ( but still -k in

N & S ), -p -> -b,  w- ~ v-, -w ~ -v , wh- ~ hv- (Old & Middle E even had "hw" ! ) + some vowel shifts here and there, and hey you have D (+S&N) - well almost :-)

"sh" usually corresponds to "sk" here, but act. they often pronounce this as "sh" in Swe.

Eg. skam=shame,skaft=shaft,skank=s­hank,shift=skift , skyd(skjut in S)=shoot,fisk=fish, busk=bush, skørt [skirt]=skirt / shirt orig,skovl=shovel,sko=shoe,sky­= shy (sky in D. also meant sky orig.! ),skinneben= shin bone, skinne=shine, skære(cut)~share/shear,skal=sh­all,bask=bash,dask~dash,skib=s­hip (->skipper).

When the Vikings arrived to pillage, trade, offer peace and later on settle

in England, the "2" languages were still like dialects of the same base language,

after 3-400 years of separation, so they could prob. still carry basic conversations

with each others.

Even though you might not be able to hear (hoer) it, you would be able with a

bit of practice to spot a lot of words in written Danish ( + Norw. & Swedish which

are just variants of the same "Norse" base language ).

These were violent and uncertain times unfortunately, I do not think gazing at the stars while a blood thirsty Viking was hacking at your neck would have been much help to them. You raise a good point though perhaps we could do with videos that look at everyday people and everyday lives.

Rome did to northern europeans exactly what britain and colonialism did to africa... dehumaised them, told lies and propaganda about them and denied there civilisation completely - labelled it as worthless haha we believed the Romans and we believed the colonialists - Roman version of history is still accepted! ??

sorry just sounded like you were excusing millahead's portrayal of anglo-saxons as only good for fighting, implying they had no culture/science worth mentioning... by saying oh well they had the vikings to deal with etc... everyone had to put up with viking threat and saxons were not inferior, they knew the stars, had knowledge as good as any of their rivals etc... that's all, i agree with you and am a fan of the video... cheers!

@aelfredhauscarl To be fair ALfred the Great did contribute to a rebirth of the academia in England. He ordered the writing of the Anglo Saxon Chronicles and encouraged the translation of texts from Latin to Old English apparantly he even did some himself.

@00JakeR00 Agree with you the purpose of these videos is to highlight some of he other Anglo Saxon kings as the English are really only taught about Alfred. Also being misinformed about the other kings such as Ironside who today it is taught that he died after a viking hid in a toilet (see the bbc's propaganda horrible histories videos for example). Edmund Ironside was far more likely to have died from dysentery. Our only regret really about this video was not presenting his case strong enough.

@MillaHead it is a common miss-conception that all 'vikings', 'germanics' and 'celts' were good for was fighting... sure they happened to be the best fighters so it is all they are remembered for... however they had lunar calednders way ahead of any other in world history before them, they were masters of metal work and silver/gold smithing, and druids etc had vast knowledge about nature, science, philosophy... what you read in books/taught at school really is lies... Roman version of history!!

@MillaHead well.... in order to build great monuments or spend endless hours watching the skies, one needs a subjugated people to work themselves into the ground in the process... one easily underestimates the man hours involved in charting the stars etc, it was for peoples of such times a momumental undertaking.... northern europe is cold, norway apart very flat, and very cloudy - doubt they'd have seen much anyway - my main point is that northern peoples are more ready to die for their freedom

The man in the film is meant to be Byrthnoth and the footage is a reenactment of the Battle of Maldon in 991. We simply used the footage and edited it for the purpose of telling our story. The writing that accompanies the footage should fill in the details. Edmund was most likely not assasinated by the way from what I have read he died after a prolonged illness maybe wounds he sustained in battle.
