my friends saw on the news back then that the bank at 90th and L had been hit so they jumped on their motorcycles to scoop up the money......there wasn't any there of course.....ak sar ben was a collisium and racetrack from the late 1890's to just a few years ago..they destroyed it to make stinson park and all the kiewit stuff between 63rd and 70th and center to pacific
@rainbowmusicomaha My dad was in an apartment building literally right across from that bank. I asked him the same question, he was like "No, the VAULT was obliterated, nevermind the money." They took shelter in the basement and luckily avoided severe damage. That said, the tornado had picked up one of the building's AC units and dropped it right on top of his VW Bug.
Was 13 at the time, still remember walking home from school, some 30 blocks to the west. The blackest sky I have ever seen, with an eerie green tint to it, less than a hour later the sirens went off.
I was 12 years old. My parents were at work so we watched it from our front yard. I lived near 108th and Q. I remember watching it jump the interstate. My cousin was working at the bank of Ralston on that day....not much left of the bank, it was an act of God that they were all ok.
@cayla99 Was watching the video when I saw that the tornado went through the area between harrison and q by 108th st. The I read your comment and was like holy guacomole! I live in the area of 108th and Q! Which neighborhood did you live in?
I was a student at UNO (Elec Eng) and had taken my wife to Crossroads to get some shoes. We watch this tornado coming at us as it crossed 76th and Pacific, and took shelter downstairs in Crossroads underground receiving docks. In 5 min it had passed. Our car was OK, as it had crossed 72nd to the East and wrecked Wolf Bros clothing, the Town House motel and other businesses over there. I was also in NE Army Natl Guard, and had to perform guard duty for 3 days in Benson to discourage looting
I am not even from the midwest yet this storm got my interest. I have lived on the east coast in Maryland my whole life. anyhoo, great recap of an intense tornado.
Ak-Sar-Ben is Nebraska backward and was the name of the horse race track across 72nd from Bergan Mercy and close, if not, where, College of St. Mary is.
@jscotter aksarben is now called stinson park...started in the 1890's and based on mardi gras...costumes and parade floats they actually went to new orleans to purchase....the kingdom of quivera is now gone..they did incredible things for omaha nebraska and iowa...built fish hatcheries etc as a non-profit......destroyed by kiewit and sons to build the kiewit learning center
my science teacher tought at the school tht was hit and he said it was just a horrible site. and he said that the janitor at school rapped himself in a rug and didnt get hurt oone single bit. he was luckky. and the tornado hit at 4:15 pm.
i hate tornados!!! my mom was alive during this tornado but she can't remember it that much! i was freaking out on june 27 and there was no tornado where i was!
OMG my dad was 3 when this happened and they lived in a tornado magnite (ppl who dont know what it is it means a home that is a home that has no basement )and so they did noy know what to do it flipping scary!!!!!!!!! sad too:((
This tornado happened the same day my husband's great-grandmother was buried. They went to her funeral in the morning and at 4:30 in the afternoon my husband (who was not quite 5 years old at the time) was hunkering down in the basement of his grandma's house with his cousins and uncles. He can still remember how dark the sky looked outside thru the basement window. Scary!
@Yankeefan69 Yes. And it destroyed the original Grandmother's restaurant right next to it. There was paper money scattered all around where the bank was, but the police/national guard responded so quickly that nobody had time to try and pick the money up.
@igetmoney69690101696 Ummm...who said it didn't? I lived about a mile north of Harrison between 90th & 96th street, and my house was basically ripped in half over my head as me and my family were in the basement.
yea lol i asked my grandpa about it and he said he was at work at the pepsi bottling plant and he heard the sirens and "Got the hell away from all that glass" and ran over to a ditch. And my mom said she was home alone and that was the most afraid she had ever been, in a basement alone thinking she was gonna die.
i am sooooo totally happy i live in nebraska theres like nuthin to do here bt we get fun weather...o nd JonNorCal916 nebraska doesnt have as many tornadoes as you think...
I was 10 and huddled with my family under an old table in our basement. The tornado was headed right for us and luckily lifted off a half mile from our home. We got hit by the debris cloud, so it rained insulation, shingles, boards and canceled checks from the Ralston Bank in our yards. We were all lucky and it was nice to see neighbors helping neighbors.
@Bamfylde003003 It sounds like the debris cloud that hit you probably included a significant portion of my family's house as we were in the Bay Meadows area where the damage actually started. I'll never forget that day, or the days immediately following.
I was 26, a Sr. at UNO, and with my wife standing in the SW entry way of the Crossroads shopping center by Baker's Shoes and watched it come over the hill at 76th and Pacific. We were hurried down to the underground loading docks of the CR, and it was over in munutes. I was in the NE Natl Guard, and was activated to stand guard agains looters. Luckily, I encountered none.
Good thing Omaha's had (and still has) sirens. Every one of them was in working order on that day at 4:29pm when they were set off. I still say that if we didn't have them or if they wern't working, more would have parished.
Oh yes,I was 9yrs old and remember this well. We lived by Rosenblatt stadium, where my sisters were ushers. I was aquainted with a few of the(Omaha Royals)players. I remember that a some of them with names like Rocky Craig,"Moose" Artenzio,(maybe Bob McClure)and others who's places at Wentworth apts were DESTROYED. George Brett lived out there too, but his place was spared. I,being 9yrs old, stayed in our basement and puked in a bucket. lol The memory of the aftermath still gives me chills.
@dinkwinkerson Funny! I was 8yrs old and had to puke in a bucket in the basement after the tornado passed. Our house was in the neighborhood directly in the path of the tornado, less than a mile away from Wentworth. It's too bad none of these videos show the massive destruction of those apartments. More then half were completely destroyed. We had 1/2 a house left after it hit us. Yes - the aftermath was completely surreal to experience.
I watched that tornado from the basement of my neighbor's house in LaVista when I was 4! My little sister was born two days later at Bergan Mercy & my ma said there were parts of the hospital still tore up, power out, all sorts of stuff! We think this is why my sister doesn't like storms! LOL I miss Omaha!!
Three years before I was born! 1 year later, June 26th, 1976 another Tornado hit the Leawood Southwest subdivision near 168th and W. Center Road taking the roof off of the new house my parents and sister had just moved into 2 weeks earlier. Luckily everything was fixed and I grew up in that house. Thanks for uploading this.
Omaha has dealt with five confirmed tornadoes in the past 32 years. March 27, 1975, May 6, 1975 (the biggie), June 26, 1976, May 7, 1988 and July 15, 1988 (the same storm that produced a tornado in Council Bluffs). The last two twisters were somewhat small in nature. The worst one ever to hit Omaha was Easter 1913.
This tornado ripped apart the apt. complex my dad lived in when he was 3, lucky that he lived... =O
