@phatboyjim1967 i think you didn't take in consideration that older bands originated with influences from the peaceville trio and divided into symphonic goth metal, doom goth metal and goth metal itself.for that matter, there are gothic metal bands in the symphonic genre,so are in the doom scene and you could also consider death/doom a subgenre of gothic metal as well but current goth metal bands sound like pop

Well.. not many bands like to be labeled (labels are constricting), but several bands on this list are hailed as pioneers of the Gothic genre (Theatre of Tragedy and Tristania). Yes, they have symphonic elements, but its still Gothic (well, their early records at least). Paradise Lost was initially a doom metal band that evolved into Gothic. Cradle of Filth was initially more in the black metal genre, but changed style into other genres like Gothic, etc etc.
i believe nightwish IS gothic; it's all about one's concept of gothic metal. Here's mine: dark lyrics, operatic vocals, heavy guitar and drums. That's all u need :)

First there was a wave called. The British new wave scene. it began with the group. Mission UK. when this group became a success, 2 groups came out. Sister of mercy, & Type o negative. Type o negative was the only group that became more then sisters of mercy. Type o negative is the Only Gothic Group that has ever lived. Gothic music from today`s days. are just so embarrassing for the Only Gothic group that has ever lived :)

The only one I consider gothic metal in this video is Lacrimosa. The others are Symphonic metal... but it doesn't matter... actually the most of the songs and bands are great! congratulations!
This music seems to combine opra-style singing with hardrock muic; the costums are very opera as well as is the makeup - all he drama of an opera if it went "hard rock" - cool! If you love this, you would love opra!
Cradle of Filth is the best band period! Nightwish is ok but i think Tristania is way better than nightwish. Theatre of Tragedy deserved at least 3rd place.

hmm not all symphonic/gothic metal bands r the best...that list misses bands like Tiamat,My Dying Bride,Anathema,Paradise Lost,these bands i named r gothic with doom metal and atmospheric sound but they have also Gothic mixes in some albums,and Moonspell and Type o negative should be there too.Not all female vocals are gothic

Yesss!!! Nightwish is #1!!! I can't decide on my favorite band, but my top three are Emilie Autumn, Evanescence, and Nightwish (with Tarja). And I didn't think The Gathering was gothic metal, but I love them anyway! :D

This music List is shit.
First there was a wave called. The British new wave scene. it began with the group. Mission UK. when this group became a success, 2 groups came out. Sister of mercy, & Type o negative. Type o negative was the only group that became more then sisters of mercy. Type o negative is the Only Gothic Group that has ever lived. Gothic music from today`s days. are just so embarrassing for the Only Gothic group that has ever lived :)

I loved this video. I hope the idiots who don't think all the bands above are gothic metal look them up, because, they are by far, the most gothic metal bands I've ever know and heard of. ;-)

The only one I consider gothic metal in this video is Lacrimosa. The others are Symphonic metal... but it doesn't matter... actually the most of the songs and bands are great! congratulations!

This music seems to combine opra-style singing with hardrock muic; the costums are very opera as well as is the makeup - all he drama of an opera if it went "hard rock" - cool! If you love this, you would love opra!

Cradle of Filth is the best band period! Nightwish is ok but i think Tristania is way better than nightwish. Theatre of Tragedy deserved at least 3rd place.
