Regarding Jennifer Trijo,- she might not have much vibrato, but that is a choice in her experssion. To say that her vibrao is not developed and Wabbly is both misleading and incorrect. I know several singers that think Lea Songa has a bit too much vibrato. So, it is a matter of taste. Thus let us judge singer out of professional criterias, not whether we think they have too little or much vibrato. Because that is your personal taste!
Jennifer has a beautiful voice. It is unique and she makes the song her own. There's no use singing it just like Lea, otherwise it would be as if she was copying her. Jennifer is an amazing person and i hope she goes well in her career :)
She's really good!! I wish everyone would stop comparing other Kims to Lea Salonga though. Yes, Lea is an amazing singer, but that doesn't mean all the other singers are crap. I for one, would love to have this voice.
That vibrating is referred to as vibrato. It actually takes a great deal of control to not do that. If I had to guess, I would say that the musical director preferred for her to not have a lot of vibrato, since this creates a cleaner tone and is more youthful sounding. So I am going to have to respectfully disagree with you. I think her lack of vibrato is perfect for this role.
Why are you guys comparing her to Lea?! Jennifer and Lea are two completely different actresses and they have different styles in their performances. Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not. So what if this girl doesn't sing with vibrato? You can sing a song without it and still sound great. And remember, this was performed for the news clip advertising the show. She might sing the song differently during a real performance. So just chill. ;)
@jules27 .if you listen closely, the pitch subtely changes randomly when she is belting. this shows, she's struggling with the placement. This could be technique or nervousness cause people's technique and breath support go down the drain when they get nervous.
@jules27 sorry for being obnoxious and correcting you...the correct term to use is vibrato. and i think it's not an issue of her voice being mature enough...her vibrato is evident in her lower notes. I think it's a technique issue & she's still struggling with the placement of the notes, so she hasn't found that perfect placement that she can just let her voice anchor at when she belts...
yes , i agree! She's no Lea but she does give justice to the role and the song :) Just makes me wonder how many Filipinas have played the role of Kim all over the world. I hear another one's playing Kim in the New Zealand production.
She's pretty and the littlle boy is very very very cute!!!!...I like her justice in the song...her voice is good for the song and role...lea is my favorite as always...but i also like her...the director of this play has a good taste...
Yes, Lea set the bar up high, but it's not fair to compare her to Lea. Nobody is the same, and no one one will ever give the same performance. All we can ask is that the play and sing the role with honesty :) I think she did.
3:22 = shivers.... up and down the spine.... holy crap. I agree that I prefer Lea's voice to her's now, but her voice on the original recording (London Cast) was not nearly as good as it is now, so this woman has an incredible voice in comparison. Amazing job.
she does sound sound a bit like lea... very good... miss saigon is running now in new zealand... how i wish it would be the original cast... lea and simon...
@1bluema I agree that Lea will always be the best (my favorite singer, and my favorite rendition of this song, always) but don't you think it's a little harsh to criticize her vibrato like that? In my opinion, she has great pitch and clarity, and that's just her style of singing the song.
@firelilyxxx I don't believe it is too harsh to point out the obvious. She's got good enough pitch, but she actually goes flat here and there throughout this rendition (i.e./ :47). She has her moments where she sounds pretty good, but she definitely needs to improve on her overall voice control.
Beautiful singer , bright voice! First;I can't feel real emotion because it's too linear , this song deserves STEPS! Too much power kill nuances. Two; I think the way of game is too heavy for the young actor child ! I'm really sorry to say that because I'm fond of Miss Saigon.I think singer and little boy are fine , but artist-director miss of delicacy!
yep i agree. jennifer's voice is very simple, not much of emotion like her face. notice that her face is the same from the start of the song - somewhat scared and angry. the voice of the korean actress in one of the videos is better and with much emotion
great voice. i just did not like how the scene... she cradled the kid so much. the cradling distracted me. love the original scene. where i can concentrate on the mother and she sang the song to the kid.
The composer said that this song is a lullaby. That is why she is cradling him a lot. The lyrics also says "you who I cradle in my arms, you." I prefer this new staging, it just show you how much she loves Tam. I hated the original staging. Kim just sits beside Tam and sings the song, it was very boring.
4/4: So, well done Jennifer!! I'll see if i can get myself another ticket to watch you again. BRAVO!! (PS: Chris & John in the Sydney show were VERY ordinary - but Thuy & Engineer - fantastic! Sets & sound effects were absolutely spectacular. And there were sobs, sniffles & wet tops everywhere too!)
3/4: In a way, it was kind of like a breath of fresh air where not every string of sentence had the vibrato in it -- though you could argue that you should expect that level of singing if you go and pay good money to see a world-famous musical. The way she bonded with her son in this song, and when protecting him from Thuy and also the last scene before she died, she is definitely up there with the best.
2/4: Jennifer definitely doesn't have "the voice" of Kim like so many others before her. I read in the papers about why she was chosen and can understand why. They picked her because she had "raw-ness" about her voice, and "raw emotions". What she lacked in so-called "Kim's powerful singing", she made up 10 times over by her acting.
Okay, i've gone to see her now in Sydney and here's my review.
1/4: I think my mistake is (like in 1995 when i saw Miss Saigon in London when Kim was played by some other) i've set Lea as benchmark - rightly or wrongly. That first time, i was disappointed. But this time, (before watching i was praying that Laurie Cadevida - best actress in a musical winner of Helpmann 2007 - would play Kim but of course it wasn't her), i thought i'd be disappointed too but surprisingly wasn't.
Thanks for posting Circusfreak! Fantastic quality. About to watch tomorrow nite and wanted to know what i should expect. She doesn't seem to have a strong control over her vibrato in this song but i guess i shall find out the rest tomorrow!
I really like how she interact more with the child in this song compare to how they did it originally. I remember the child was just on the stage writing on a book while Kim was singing. Here she hugs and carries him on her arms. Here she looks like she is singing a lullaby to Tam while he sleeps on her arm. It has more emotion and heart.

Shes not meant to be mature as a character.
shes a young woman, and no vibrato isn't a bad thing.
Different people have different degrees of vibrato.
i agree she might not be lea Salonga but shes still great! :)
