He says that when falling initially he didn't feel any wind resistance or friction, which means that he left the atmosphere right? Space shuttles are protected with special tiles and heat shields, but wasn't he just wearing a suit?

One, he did not actually have to penetrate the atmosphere (as the video said, he went through 99% of the gases, meaning still in the atmosphere.) unlike how a space shuttle does. They actually leave the atmosphere and have to re-enter at a certain velocity or other wise, they will literally rebound off. While at this velocity, they cannot slow down enough before they hit the troposphere which generates heat.
