You can learn from a know-all. At weekly journalism college in about 1966 a know-all took me to the music store at the Charlie Chaplin centre at the Elephant & Castle in London and said get a load of this: it was Bert's "blue album" & been listening to him every since. RIP young Herbert.
I can imagine being 18 back then...what awesome times for music...now all we have is a handful of good bands...and of course some of the old ones are still around...but its not the same =/
Thanks for posting this! I'm fortunate to have been at his concert at Sydney Town Hall, Australia circa 1975. He played solo and had everyone's rapt attention! And the act that followed his? An equally awesome solo performance by John Martyn! What a double billing!
@mikinozz That would be amazing! Two of my guitar heroes that I will most definitely never see and you saw the two at once, I'm always jealous and frustrated when i talk to my grandparents and things and they say something like: 'when we went to see hendrix the Who were standing behind us and decided to do a wee set as well'
i remember tony stratton-smith telling me that bert's next would feature red rhodes. i say oh yeh big deal. when it came out with 'one 4 jo', it was a good surprise. i was in seattle when bert came over, time of 'circus', so me n bobby barton met up. one thing we all agreed on: despite the guitar n minstrel tradition yadda yadda, the americans have never had one clue how to listen to, assess, talk about, talk *to bert ... anything janschian, ZILCH. another galaxy. who cares, but its odd.
@grimobo I came across a Bert Jansch record 22 years ago and it changed my life. I've introduced many friends and guitar students to his songs and his unspeakably beautiful accompaniment style. I met him and got his autograph a few weeks ago after a Neil Young show. I simply said he was one of my favorite musicians and that I was as excited to see him as I was Neil. He struck me as very shy and utterly humble.
So I know exactly how to listen to, assess, talk about, and talk to Bert.
Bert was not happy about this being filmed (at least initially). He felt he was effectively ambushed. The whole episode is detailed in the Harper book 'Dazzling Stranger'.

You can feel the flow and depth Bert has with this session of songs from the album. This is his best work from where I sit.

so cool to see the producer ex-Monkee Michael Nesmith here.
I used to as a kid babysit his son in Hollywood.
What ya doing lately Michael. Gonna have research where the wind has taken you.
Jansch is simply great here.
