i think the issue with your snare is there isn't enough snare wire resonance, which is making it sound like your snare wires are off. maybe try a mic on the bottom of the drum

For people who are assuming his snare is out of tune, you're completely off. His snare actually has a very nice crack to it, and fits this kind of music very well. However, I agree that it should be turned down in the mix. More importantly, nice playing man, just next time you record your drums, balance out the snare with the rest of the kit.

This Mars Volta song (and most of their songs) are full of fast fills with the snare and cymbals. You do it fucking good, it's really hard to be accurate and keep the speed up. But as a drummer myself I gotta tell ya ... get a new snare :P!

Oh yeah, and as for the whole time signature thing, the first two measures are in 4/4, the third is in 5/4, and the last goes back to 4/4. That's how it's counted. No musician would ever count 17/4.
