You are right. Gutter guard brand guards don't work and cause more work in the long run. Plastic guards warp and cave, hoods over shoot and/or invade the roof integrity, and most screens have openings too large to keep sludge from building. I have been installing a product for 12 years. Of which, the only call backs I have gotten were the result of one bionic squirrel that really could eat metal, inside mitre overages, moss which was a preexisting condition and tree branches from storms.
No form of gutter protection gives you a 'Maintenance-Free' solution but some gutter protection systems work better than others. A product called Leafscreener DOES work. It seals the gutters AND valleys from leaves etc. Small stuff will still get it but that can be flushed out with a hose once a year. It's certainly better than getting up a ladder on a monthly basis!
Have to agree, after years of gutter work, I found the same thing, the sediment building up over time is a real problem, eventually clogging the gutters and the downspouts. Often just clearing out the downspout is not adequate as there is a whole gutter full of sludgy muck that will quickly plug it again. Better to clean them out once or twice a year than to leave them unchecked for years .

The guard definitely work. Some better than others, but you still occasionally need someone cleaning the top of them off.
