Germany has 611 cars per 1000 inhabitants. Not much different than the car ownership rate of US (794/1000). Though it is POSSIBLE for people to get around by train, road traffic by car has a 78% market share measured as a proportion of km*pax travelled in 2006 (Source: Eurostat). I hate the amount of money gov't spend on railways while there is congestion on many Autobahns. And I really don't care about the global warming hoax.
Your point is valid for those who live in urban districts of cities. Public transport is pretty decent there. Not excellent but reasonable.
The majority of Germans , however, live in suburban or rural areas where there is just one useful transport option, a private car. There is no way that more Germans ditch their cars.
In Chicago L is slang for EL a shortened form of elevated. Now York calls it's transit system the subway. In Chicago we call our Rapid Transit the "L". It has been called that ever since the first line opened in 1892.
What did I think about your video? Sincerly, it's truly AWESOME!!! You give me ideas for making a clip same as yours (mentioning your clip, of course) with the Bucharest (the capital of Romania) local transport and the major cities from Romania. I agree you with all that you said and I think that the car is good only for emergency travels (hospital, urgent meeting) and not using it on getting school, to work or other stuff...
YOU DID A VERY NICE INSIGHT!!!!! Keep up with the good work!!
Well, I'm living in Germany and in my opinion your conclusion is right, when you live in a city like Berlin. In fact a lot of people have no car. Especialy in big citys it's often not easy to get a parking space and parking lots are mostly crowded or very expensive. So the public transport is a good alternative to the car.
I wish America had THIS many trams. We have quite a few light rail and subway systems but nothing compares to Germany. We have too many busses.

Berlin is a big City so the Local Transport must work or almost everything is collapsing.
But if it works it´s easy to came from one side to the other one.

Ride your bike, take a tram, it just isn't so hard. Good video, and wisdom for the sake of humanity. Get out or your car!

It seems TopGear was right: the only enemy of the car is the German public transport system!

Chicago has a great transportation system, provided you ride during the day and your bus route hasn't been discontinued. Also if you can afford it!

@Trainbrain1949 It is $2.00 here in Chicago. If you get on a bus and pay cash there are no transfers to other buses or the L.

A Regional train with 5 double-deck passenger cars!? In Portugal de normal is an simple, double or triple DMUs with only one-decked cars!
