No, despite the impression sometimes created by his lyrics, Jake was a remarkably devout & practising Catholic. He just had no time for pomposity, windbaggery, hypocrisy or hierarchy. Like his God he wasn't too keen on whited sepulchres. And like Randy Newman's lyrics, Jake's are often misunderstood. He was sometimes accused of misogyny too (cf. "On Again, On Again", "Miss World") but in fact he loved and admired women and appreciated that they are superior to men in many (most?) ways!

I think Jake's world-view was more aligned that of most atheists, compared to that of most Catholics!
Perhaps that's just my own prejudices speaking though...
