It can be.  We were up-wind with 10-15mph wind gusts pushing the hot air away. However, the radiant heat is still felt if you get too close.

The gases are dangerous in only two places: Where it first eminates from the earth and where it enters the ocean. It can also be dangerous where it flows over current vegetation because of trapped methane that may ignite and explode. This area was none of the above.
