I heard that the studio didn't want Katie Holmes back. The public TomKat love affair was overshadowing her duty in promoting the film. Also, she wasn't that great in the film (ask any avid Batman movie fan who saw the film and they'll tell you that she gave the weakest performance out of the entire cast). I've seen Dark Knight and it's a zillion times better without her in it (plus, Heath Ledger's iconic role as the Joker made it phenomenal).

But actually she was asked to come back but at the time she was also signed up to do Mad Money and the time for shooting the movie was the same time shooting the Batman movie so they had to find a replacement. I think she was good for the part. She was better than her replacement. Maggie something she looked old and drainy like she was batman's mother or something. I was Katie came back for the film but she was scheduled to film another movie.
