a friend of mine, who is a professional distiller, gave me the following advice:
take a small sip, form a little dent with your tongue and keep the sip in that dent until it stops burning. then slowly lift your tongue and let the sip run down the back of your tongue while you exhale through your nose. like this, you will be able to taste all the fine nuances of the spirit. it's unbelievable, how much more one is able to taste with this "technique".
e.g. for 1 liter of 50% alcohol pálinka (hungarian drink) you need 100 kg (200 lbs) blackthorn. what is left in the bottle is truly the spirit of the fruit. true, most "spirits" are not worth tasting.

According to Wikipedia:
"Unsweetened, distilled, alcoholic beverages that have an alcohol content of at least 20% ABV are called spirits."
So pretty much most hard distilled alcohol.
