if at any point serious intelligent listeners notice a difference in cornells voice thats for the worst, as they come and go, note hes playing rhythm guitar and this is a rehearsal, he has more on his mind than what part to carry high notes on and instead probably just screams and makes it sound sick anyways
A direct quote from Eddie Vedder, "Matt Cameron writes songs and we run to find step stools in order to reach his level,...what comes naturally to him leaves us with our heads cocked like the confused dogs that we are,...eventually getting it. Did we mention he's the greatest drummer on the planet?". Enough said.
Soundgarden was the best group to come out of the Seattle grunge scene of the 1990s. To each their own and that is my opinion. I liked Nirvana, like Alice in Chains a lot but Soundgarden was my fave. Kim Thayil is a freaking Guitar God and Chris is a true poet that knows how to use those vocals. I do not think the grunge scene will ever come back, like if the scene it self actually matters, but I am sure glad that the best rock group of the 1990s along with the Smashing Pumkins is back.
@gothnickify Perfectly articulated except for one phrase: Guitar God. He isn't a Guitar God, he's a "Guitar Guru"! My apologies if you aren't aware of the reference, in which case I might look very stupid.
All you motherfuckers that are being technical about his voice & register ...... Shut the fuck up....When you can sing as good as he can & have an ounce of his talent ...Then you can yap on & on ...If your as good as him or better ,Than post some video of yourselves singing better than him...until than ..SHUT THE FUCK UP !!!!!!!!
You know, the one thing I hate about Youtube is the comments...I could really give a shit what anyone thinks or says about anything. Maybe someday they'll ditch this stupid forum for morons to voice their worthless opinion.
Chris Cornell has let me down too many times and has tainted Soundgarden, which used to be my favorite band, forever. I can't even listen to Soundgarden anymore, because everything reminds me of how Chris Cornell was supposed to save rock music with Audioslace until it got to be about money. Then he released that faggoty ass rap bullshit, and now this. That's gay.
I'm really surprised how well Chris's voice sounds with them. He sounded like he was really struggling with audioslave but he sounds really comfortable here. I hope it gets even better! LET'S MAKE A NEW ALBUM!
@quathar I've listened. Sounds impressing, but if you listen carefully you notice that is a "falsetto".not full voice (which you can hear from performances before they split).Don't know how long he can take, even falsetto is fatiguing;most of Audioslave songs were less difficult to sing, and we all know how it ended (i truly don't believe the "artistic discordances" thing),with Chris who couldn't resist a 2hrs gig (in fact after the first "screaming" album he changed completely 4 the next 2 works).
It's not good to say this, but I seriously think he reunited with SG just because he understood how awful his solo career had become... to avoid becoming a "commercial pop singer" (damn when I listened to his latest single I was astonished!) the only thing he could do was calling back his old mates (audioslave reunion's not possible anymore because of RATM) and try a revival (as every '90s band seems to do it nowadays..). Hope i'm wrong... but this is my impression.
@slaskrevenge I'm sorry but those distinctions between types of voices is meaningless unless you say what school of singing you adhere to. And even then it's usually still pointless because there are so many myths and confusions and inaccuracies in most voice schools. His voice IS different though, especially in the high registers, that I can agree on and generally I think he sounded his best in the mid 90s.
it doesn't matter what school of singing (i couldn't even explain which is, i just think falsetto shouldn't be used/abused when one cannot reach high tones), those songs were recorded and played live with a specific register; if now Chris uses falsetto to replace that register, because he can't sing those high chorus, well, obviously there's a problem.
yes, he sounded best in the mid 90s, and probably he was a terrific performer until first gigs with Audioslave...
@slaskrevenge Sure it matters, just as terminology matters in any artform if you are to have a meaningful discussion about it. For instance, according to CVT both of his efforts would have been "neutral" (the equivalent, in some regards, to falsetto). He is obviously modulating the voice differently, and he was more in the center of the mode (neutral is one of four modes in CVT) before; my semi-educated guess anyway. All high notes are usually done in neutral since that needs the least energy.
Matt Cameron plays the part at 2:41, left handed. So fucking badass. I remember seeing it in a video of them playing Seattle in '92. BLEW MY MIND. He is so damn good.
Jason Sutter is average, and don't compare the guitarist to kim thayil, no comparison. Its one thing to play music that has all ready been written, quite another to come up with something original on your own.
I was there. It was AWESOME...!!!!!!!!! To the argument posted below - Matt Cameron is an amazing drummer w/ great tempo and an innovative approach. Also, Chris Cornell held it down pretty f***king solid. I only heard him falsetto on 1 song. Pretty damn impressive (he ain't 21 anymore).
Chris Cornell has lost his voice ok..but let's not be too technical and see the positive side of all this comeback of the band...they're all together again and let's enjoy! :)
Chris Cornell has lost his voive ok..but let's not be too technical and see the positive side of all this comeback of the band...they're all together again and let's enjoy! :)
Thayil's really showing his style on this one. He does it sooooo much fucking better than that gay poppy backing band for Cornell. As for Cornell, these vocals are fucking incredible.
@ktrel54 Well, I think Cornell stretches himself vocally so much on every song, that it's difficult to have consistantly fantastic vocals all the way through the show without straining himself, but you're right, they're really good considering.
@ktrel54 Eh, that "Gay poppy band" has two of the best damn guitarists, Peter "effing" Thorn and Yogi Lonich - in the business and one of the baddest effing drummers you'll ever see, Jason Sutter.
I think you might be objecting to the "Timberlen" dance material, which I don't fault you for doing.
@JoeSidhu Look fanboy, I'm major, raving fan of Matt Cameron's as well, but to refer to one of the most accomplished and versitile drummers in the industry as "average at best" beyond irresponsible, if not moronic. Whata tell us next, "Steve Gadd is alright." Lol! There are about 1000 seriously accomplish bad-asses that would LOVE to have that kind of "average" as their drummer.
@strust007 i wouldn't say the best alive, but he's damn good. Out of the "Big 4" of "grunge", i can't decide whose better, Grohl or Cameron, and i worshipat the altar of Dave Grohl.
@TheToastBrothers they both seem like nice guys from what i've seen, and they are both god damn great drummers. For influence and notoriety, it would definately be Dave, but technical ability, i think it's too close to call.
@superdude13666 Personally, I'll go for personal style more than I will flash. I don't care about a drummer being able to hit 5/16 notes on a hi-hat, I want groove and intensity. Bruford is good on those accounts, though.
Its kinda like saying the best guitarist is the one who can hit the most notes. To hell with that!
Anyways, Soundgarden sound great here. Shame that Cornell isn't 10 years younger, but all things considering, he sounds awesome.
@deadboys1010 i'm glad chris isn't 10 years younger. 10 years ago he was with audioslave and didn't sound nearly as good as he does now....now if he was "euphoria morning" age that would be a different story
