I wish I could do what you are doing for birds. I have a 3 year old sun conure and I love her more than anything. When I have the finances to take in another bird i am going to adopt. You are wonderful and each and every bird is a blessing.
Why in the world there is only mean people? Do they do not have heart? STOP IT! Stop abusing the birds, they can feel too, they are living creatures too, just like us. In my house we have 1 bird, her name is Molly, we play with her all day, and she is very healthy. Also, in our garden, when birds come to our home and they need help, we always help them, and then set them free. Why, there is no one who cares for creation?
I want to adopt an Umbrella Cockatoo from a rescue center. I live close to Toronto. If anybody knows of any rescue centers around Toronto please reply to this or inbox me with the details please!
Irena you have got the most beautiful voice. This song makes me cry because unfortunately its so true what you are singing about... Great work you are doing :):):) I love Snowball. !!!!!
@BrightTigerSpirit I don't favor Snowball more, but I do interact with all of the birds differently because they all have different likes and personalities. Snowball loves to dance so I can get some aerobics in with him. But there are others that love to chit chat back and forth, others like to be held, and one even likes to wrestle. They each enjoy life in different ways...I just like to bring that out in each.
So sad listening to your words. I so love our wild birds, they are so naturally friendly and I hate seeing them half-a-world away instead of creating a ruckus in our skies. I am sure it's the same for others on seeing their natives so far away. BTW (I'm sure you know), cockatoos absolutely swoon when scratched (ever so gently) on the soft little mound of flesh where the crest feathers erupt. At least yours are loved, but I am glad "mine" Rosellas, King Parrots, Lorikeets etc are free. DONATE!
@kreollicious Thank you for those kind words! However, because breeding continues without pause there is an overpopulation problem. Many of these intelligent birds end up in the wrong hands to eventually end up in rescues and sanctuaries for rehabilitation. The cockatoos and macaws live over 80 years, so it is more likely than not that at some point in their life will be the victim of an abusive or neglectful environment.

He has been lame in both legs since birth/hatch. We had to build special platforms for his cage so he can rest comfortably instead of teetering on round perches since he is unable to grasp anything with his claws. He is an incredibly sweet Congo African Gray.
Donations have been practically non-existent over the last year and a half. We do receive some consistant donations from some very kind people, but sadly, the majority comes from tv shows, commercials, etc. We have had to put the addition on hold because of the shaky economy. We can't invest money that goes towards daily care towards an addition at this time. Thank you for asking!
The African Grey has two legs, but has been lame in both legs since birth. It really cannot perch like a normal bird so we had to build platforms for him to sit on so he wouldn't fall to the bottom of the cage. When he was relinquished to us his cage only had the round dowel rods and kept falling off onto the floor of his cage. He rests comfortably on the platforms now.
Did I see right? Did the Grey in the Video have only one leg?
Btw- Keep up the good work so many people don't know what they're getting into when they get a parrot. I personally have personally made it a point to educate people when they say they want one to prevent this as much as I can. I also worry about what will happen to my cockatoo if she outlives me but I'm not sure what resources are out there. Any suggestions? ( She loves watching Snowball ^^ )
It would be best to check into rescues and sanctuaries if you have no friends or family members that are qualified to take over the care of your cockatoo. Once you find a good quality rescue or sanctuary, designate in your living will that your bird is to go there. It is recommended that you set aside a trust fund for the bird regardless of where he goes since it is expensive to properly feed and care for a bird. Thank you also for educating the public! That is so important!
Please adopt a bird. There are way too many homeless birds and the problem continues to grow. By purchasing one as a baby, it only encourages more breeding and more homelessness. These birds can live upwards of 60 years of age. If we built a sanctuary the size of a football stadium, we would easily have it filled with homeless birds and those needing a new home within a week.
My personal favorites have been the sulphur cresteds (yellow) and the moluccan cockatoos (pale peach with coral crest). Please remember that these birds are exceptionally needy for attention and very high maintenance. The male cockatoos become very aggressive and temperamental once they reach sexual maturity. Many become unhandleable because they bite so hard for no reason.
I love this video, even though it breaks my heart seeing it. I volunteer at a parrot rescue locally, and so many people don't understand how sensitive, needy, and emotional a lot of these birds can be (especially the cockatoos). I see the Moluccans in your vid and I think about a few of the special ones that came through. I held one, in my lap, for four hours after she'd been given up by her daddy. She slowly moved up from my lap to cuddle against my cheek, and just slept there. You do good.
we have two toos. BOTH need attention 24 hours a day. they get about 20 (?) hours a day - ha ha ha beautiful birds and WELL WORTH the time and expense in having them. younger members of our family already are "signed up" to take them when we continue the journey.
You can go to our main web site and click on "Adoption Info and Application." Just fill out an online adoption application. Please include at least one veterinarian as a reference and one character reference.
Such a beautiful song. My birds are my family. They bring so much love into my home. All are rescues except for my Grey. They are so worth the time and work and noise. I have learned patience when I get a new bird and they always come around when they get to know me. I am facing foreclosure and pray that I wont have to give up my parrots.
I have an african parrot and a cockatail, I love them so much! It was from this place were people abandon their pets. Mine were sometimes beaten for making noise at first they were afraid of me but now we are joined at the hip. I miss them so much because I'm at college and their at home with my little sister and older brother.
Yes, this is sad. This is what most people don't see or want to see but it exists. Birds are abused, neglected, thrown out of car windows, left in abandoned homes to starve to death, and even stored in garages because the owners can't stand the noise. These are intelligent, living beings that deserve better lives. We all enjoy watching Snowball dance, but he's one of the lucky birds who has had good owners in the past. Not all have been so lucky.
You are such a lovely person singing a BEAUTIFUL SONG. You have a LOVELY VOICE and I love the lyrics. Thanks for all that you do in promoting RESCUING!
Yes, that was a severe macaw. He was adopted and I miss him terribly...we had come such a long way together. I think about these birds long after they have been adopted. I try to not worry, but I do. I know that because they live so long that even though I've found them a great home, it won't be their last and I can't help but wonder if many years down the road the next home will care for them properly. Donations are down because of the economy, but we manage for now.
I rescued two budgies from a neglectful former coworker. they were both overweight and only eating millet and living in a teeny cage with no toys. Two very small birds and even that was too much for this person. I am glad every day that I took these girls in even though my hand training with my own two budgies has backslid since they moved in. I love my 4 budgies but even tiny birds are a huge commitment. Their cage alone is far larger than my 35 pound dog's sleeping crate is.
Thank you so very much for posting this comment! Taking care of birds (keeping them happy and healthy) is not easy and I commend you on the wonderful job you are doing. Their cage sounds beautiful! Kudos to you!!!

i have one and i want anthore one cause i love parrot and i want to buy all of them and i love this song it macks me so so so so so sad im a girl okey this is my brother name.
i miss my grey cockatil he still lives by me but i miss hearing him chrp in the moring i sit here cring over my keyboard beacuase i miss him soo much i only have my white cockatill jerry my rabbit kasey and my dog lulu.;( This video made me cry in a good way and my dad wont let me get him back i miss him any advice
I would love to do what you are doing and hope to one day. I love birds so much. My Mom got me a budgie for my birthday and that started my love for these innocent creatures. I think it is so sad that they get mis-treated and abused. And it probably starts because of the noise they make. I think people should definitely do their research before they go and buy a bird. It's a big commitment. I want a bird so bad but I'm getting ready to have a baby. I wouldn't have the time. Maybe one day!
You are so right! Many people do not realize how loud and needy birds can be until they get them home...and then these birds become neglected and abused out of frustration. THANK YOU!
Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only Rescue Service, Inc.
i'de love to adopt all of them but unfortunately my dad wont let me!!! i have a budgie and hes name is Blueberry and he's going to be 6 years old this summer i love him so much i just love birds!!!!!!! i love them there so cute and intelegent!!!!
OK, the grey with the deformed or injured feet really tipped me over and sent me bawling. I wish the public could learn that a parrot is not an "impulse" buy, that it takes a lifetime of commitment to share your life with these birds who love us unconditionally. There should be a test one would have to pass to get a bird. It's too sad, I can't watch it...
This particular African Grey has been lame since birth. When an egg is not turned periodically by its parent, the pressure of sitting in one position too long can cause damage. That was what happened to this grey. But you are correct that a parrot should not be an impulse buy. They are extremely intelligent and very demanding of one's attention (much more demanding than a dog or cat).
Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only Rescue Service, Inc.
how i can adopt a bird from you? so i can take of it i really love birds like my first pet was a yellow nake from my also beggining of living my life and had always birds as my pets
I would rescue more birds, but I already have 3 that we're abused and two that we bought.PLus other abused animals. We have too many pets but wanted to give them a second chance :[
Thank you for bringing awareness to the forgotten birds! People always care about dogs and cats, but birds are just as special! I lost my baby parakeet a few years ago, and this song made me think of him...
Beautiful. Just beautiful. Not only do you have a big heart, but you also have a gorgeous voice. Your lyrics made me cry. I only wish more people could hear this and understand the magnificence of these creatures before they decide they want to own a parrot only to relinquish them later. I really feel to own one is a lifetime commitment and an honor. Your advice to work in a sanctuary before deciding to own is excellent.
snowball is an amazing and outstanding bird. snowball has been through a lot i would guess. I am a fan of snowball. i love all the dances he does. i have a bird.... its a pacific parolette, his names wazo.Snowball is adorable. When i grow up i wanna adopt a bird. Well.... tell snowball that hes loved by everyone, everywhere. :)
hello, i really want to adopt bird. but i'm from lithuania. it's in europe. maybe i can somehow get bird from you? maybe there is someway to send bird?
I would recommend volunteering at a bird rescue or sanctuary. Owning one is a LOT different than researching one. There are many bird rescues that have foster programs that allow you to foster a bird for up to 90 days prior to adoption to make sure that you are right for the bird.
Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only Rescue Service, Inc.
Cockatoos are the most difficult bird to keep in captivity because they are so needy and loud. Please volunteer at a bird rescue or sanctuary to learn more about the needs of these birds before you decide to adopt.
Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only Rescue Service, Inc.
Irena, keep up this fantastic job. Your birds are beautiful, I'm birdlover too and would rescue them all. Snowball is the most beautiful parrot I've ever seen. I congratulate your passion, devotion and huge engagement...
Thank you so very much for your kind words! I used to be a molecular biologist and can't imagine giving this up to go back to working in a laboratory. This has been so much more rewarding!
Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only Rescue Service, Inc.
that was the right choice, i guess.these days people tend to focus almost allways on the money.yes, money maybe important to, but i do have my own saying - "if you do something, do it with love and it turns out good!".some people got those high payed jobs, but they don´t love what they do.
this song is GREAT!!! Just an idea, maybe, you learn Snowball dancing on that song, and you go to BGT or some audition show... People will know you, you can advert for free and maybe you'll even win, because you're voice is AMAZING!!!! I had goosebumps and started crying...
Your birds are so beautiful! I have 2 male budgies that I adopted 5 months ago, and would love for them to get used to me more, but they are still very nervous around me and others.
When I got them the already had their wings clipped, one is already back to flying but the other can't. I think whom ever did the clipping damaged one of his wings. It breaks my heart. I feel so bad for him, he does sound fustrated when he can't fly around the bedroom. I just wish I could help him fly.
Whenever you have a friend or acquaintance interested in bringing a new animal into their home, please encourage them to adopt. There are so many homeless animals in need of loving homes.
Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only Rescue Service, Inc.
Forgive my ignorance, but, why don't you just let them go? I am not a bird person, so I don't see why they couldn't survive out in the wild. BTW, Snowball is amazing.
Because the birds are domesticated, they do not know how to forage for food in the wild. And because they have not had to learn to flee from predators in the household, they are susceptible to predation outdoors. If institutions could be built across the country to help reintroduce birds into the wild, teaching them to forage for food etc then they could be released back into the wild.
You are an angel. what you do is incredible. i started watching Svowball videos I am now hooked on finding out everthing I can about your orgization. i have an African Grey Dezi she is a real member of our family. Your voice is so soulful and reminds me of Annie Lennox. Beautiful lyrics. Keep up all your good work. The world needs more people loke you.
Hey, the animals were here before us. And all we do is take away their home and put them in cages. People don't understand that birds of any kind are NOT cats and dogs and are not decoration. Birds are just like two year old human children. Messy, loud, they need toys and special care/diets. But they can make your best friend. My little Jenday conure is my best friend in the whole world. I couldn't have gotten through many things without her.
I want to get a cockatoo but i want more to rescue one. But here in Greece there are no agencys. It's such a shame that so many birds need a new home better than the old one...and i don't have the chance to offer mine for one of them.. :(
Ahh! I adopted my year old cockatiel from an adoption agency! Aah shes the best, and she trusts me more then I think any other pet would! :D I love your videos!
if only everyone would realize that all other creatures on this planet are like humans... we arent the most important or intelligent. just the most selfish...its so sad.
I rescued my bird from a person who never spent time with her or played with her at all! the only thing she would do with her is when she wouldnt stop squacking for attention is put her in a guinea pig ball and roll her down 2 flights of stairs! the girl came to me and without even letting her say a word i said i would love to have your bird. she is now mine she is 2 yrs old and her new name is Rio from the song Rio by Durran Durran!
Absolutely! We have a sanctuary bird here that was strongly bonded to a male owner for 17 years. This bird is now strongly bonded to me. Parrots are very resilient.
Thank you for doing this, I currently have a parrot the loves me, my brother, and my mother, and if something were to happen to him, i don't think we would survive(dead serious, he is amazing)
No one taught or trained Snowball to dance. He dances because he truly enjoys and appreciates music. Many birds dance because they enjoy it. Other animals exhibit the same appreciation of music as has been documented by scientists around the world.
It's too bad we couldn't just take all the unwanted birds and release them back to their original country's forrests.I'd rather them take that chance of being 100% free then being locked up in cages. They deserve to fly. My 8 parrots have their own cages, but their doors are open 24/7 so they can have some freedom to fly. BIRDS RULE !
This is what happens when greedy pet shop owners start messing with nature and brings it to us in a cage at home rather than us going to them to see them.
hi, i have a cockatoo too, and i really love it. it originally comes from Papua, (my bro gave it to me). Its name is Pokky. She can't say anything, i think it still young or baby? How can i stroke it? I really wanna hug her..
Is it a hand-raised bird? Usually if it's tame it is handleable. They enjoy having the top of their heads scratched and then they like to have the area right around their ears rubbed gently and lightly. There are some very good bird training and behavior books out there that would help you understaned your bird's needs. Please be sure to take your bird to an avian vet for an exam and tests to make sure it's healthy.
Moluccan Cockatoo's have so much love in them, it is hard for me to see them after they have been neglected. We had a lovely Moluccan named Sammy. We loved him dearly. A chrome cage was given to us and flakes of chrome from the cage killed him. Zinc is in chrome and the Zinc poisoned him. It's been about a year since then and I still get very upset about loosing him. I blame myself everytime I think about him.
Don't blame yourself. We have only recently realized how toxic some cages can be to birds. We test parrots for zinc and lead toxicity when they come to us in older cages or if we suspect that the exposed metal contains zinc or lead. Zinc toxicity is much more common than we had ever suspected by the number of birds coming back positive for zinc. Again, don't blame yourself. We can't know everything.
tabula1rasa , Yes, they need to live in the wild, but unfortunately for them that they can't. Not only them that can not always choose what they want or where to stay , but also US!
In this case, I think he is happy where he is right now.
Why don't you take a little bit more time to look at this bird again, you will see what I see... "HE IS HAPPY!!!"
If you are not appreciate what they (The Bird Lovers Only Rescue) do for these rescued birds, just stay quiet! Please don't hurt them with your narrow minded perception!
Birds are so cute and so intelligent! I love all animals. My family have three dogs, a parrot (although we don't get to take her out of her cage very much, for some reason she loves it there and doesn't want to go out) and a bunch of guinea pigs. I love them all very much. When I move out, I'm getting a little cat. =D
Birds that aren't used to being out of their cage will prefer to stay inside. Try leaving the door open so that the bird can come out on its own so it can at least stretch its wings. It's not healthy for them to be locked up all their lives.
We do open the cage every day so she can walk around. But usually, she goes into the kitchen, looks around to see what's there, and then goes back in.
OMG they are so cute i love birds and i have a magermitchel named indi she is so cute but she has special needs after chewing our TV cord three times so she cant talk and screems to get our atention but i still love her
I wish I were young enough to get a rescue bird! when i'll get my house in 3 months time I'll get two greyhouds that have been rescued from England & Ireland when they proved not good enough for the racetrack. Long life to Snowball & others. Thanks for caring.
Bless your heart for rescuing those dogs! Isn't it sad that animals are treated as 'useless' when their purpose has been served? I'm glad there are people like you out there to love them unconditionally and show animals that they are special no matter what.
People don't understand how much work and attention these birds need, they are not just something you can put in a cage and ignore. They need love. I hope we can spread the word and save them. Thanks for posting.
You are so right. Parrots are extremely intelligent. Imagine yourself being locked in a cage and ignored. They exhibit the same emotions we do...jealousy, anger, love, sadness, boredom, resentment, fear, joy, etc.
This is a Congo African Grey who was lame since birth. He manages to walk around and even climb in his cage by using his "elbows." He is one of the 'special needs' sanctuary birds. He is approximately 26 or 27 years of age.
I wish I could do what you are doing for birds. I have a 3 year old sun conure and I love her more than anything. When I have the finances to take in another bird i am going to adopt. You are wonderful and each and every bird is a blessing.

i don`t know what`s more fun i want both spieces. but i think it is the yellow headed.
greetings from the Netherlands.
akkimam 2 years ago

I am facing foreclosure and pray that I wont have to give up my parrots.
annettemerrill 2 years ago
I have an african parrot and a cockatail, I love them so much! It was from this place were people abandon their pets. Mine were sometimes beaten for making noise at first they were afraid of me but now we are joined at the hip. I miss them so much because I'm at college and their at home with my little sister and older brother.
Miagirl33 2 years ago
Thank you for this.
It breaks my heart how many unloved and abused birds there are.
These creatures are so intelligent.
I wish people would do a little research before buying them at pet stores.
Me and my rescued too (Luna) appreciate what you are trying to do.

this is pobaly one of ur vids i dont like its sooooo sad=( i think im going to go watch Snowball dance to cheer me up =)
Azima606 2 years ago
Yes, this is sad. This is what most people don't see or want to see but it exists. Birds are abused, neglected, thrown out of car windows, left in abandoned homes to starve to death, and even stored in garages because the owners can't stand the noise. These are intelligent, living beings that deserve better lives. We all enjoy watching Snowball dance, but he's one of the lucky birds who has had good owners in the past. Not all have been so lucky.

Irena, was that a little Severe Macaw you were reading to in the video?
I understand he was terrified of people & you gradually gained his trust by sitting near & reading to him.
Goes to show how patience & sensitivity with such a intelligent creature can bring results. Not to give up on them!
I hope folks support your Rescue. Times are tough & Donations are sorely needed for surrendered birds.
elli864 2 years ago

It's too sad, I can't watch it...
in2birds 2 years ago 4
This particular African Grey has been lame since birth. When an egg is not turned periodically by its parent, the pressure of sitting in one position too long can cause damage. That was what happened to this grey. But you are correct that a parrot should not be an impulse buy. They are extremely intelligent and very demanding of one's attention (much more demanding than a dog or cat).

XxSuperSagexX 2 years ago
I would recommend volunteering at a bird rescue or sanctuary. Owning one is a LOT different than researching one. There are many bird rescues that have foster programs that allow you to foster a bird for up to 90 days prior to adoption to make sure that you are right for the bird.
Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only Rescue Service, Inc.

i would seriously consider buying one, but
unfortunately i am broke.... and my dad would
not let me spend 800 dollars on one... but when
i reach next year 16, just imagine how many of those will be sitting in my room dancing like snowball! (hopefully) XD
i will get a job, because i really want a cockatoo! i'm stuck with two budgies :P

Cockatoos are the most difficult bird to keep in captivity because they are so needy and loud. Please volunteer at a bird rescue or sanctuary to learn more about the needs of these birds before you decide to adopt.

Forgive my ignorance, but, why don't you just let them go? I am not a bird person, so I don't see why they couldn't survive out in the wild. BTW, Snowball is amazing.
o4o29o1967 2 years ago
Because the birds are domesticated, they do not know how to forage for food in the wild. And because they have not had to learn to flee from predators in the household, they are susceptible to predation outdoors. If institutions could be built across the country to help reintroduce birds into the wild, teaching them to forage for food etc then they could be released back into the wild.

ParakeetsAtPetco 2 years ago 3
Hey, the animals were here before us. And all we do is take away their home and put them in cages. People don't understand that birds of any kind are NOT cats and dogs and are not decoration. Birds are just like two year old human children. Messy, loud, they need toys and special care/diets. But they can make your best friend. My little Jenday conure is my best friend in the whole world. I couldn't have gotten through many things without her.

BIRDS RULE !

thekoiponds 3 years ago

Pleader8 3 years ago
Don't blame yourself. We have only recently realized how toxic some cages can be to birds. We test parrots for zinc and lead toxicity when they come to us in older cages or if we suspect that the exposed metal contains zinc or lead. Zinc toxicity is much more common than we had ever suspected by the number of birds coming back positive for zinc. Again, don't blame yourself. We can't know everything.

crazyhaircut94 3 years ago
Birds that aren't used to being out of their cage will prefer to stay inside. Try leaving the door open so that the bird can come out on its own so it can at least stretch its wings. It's not healthy for them to be locked up all their lives.
