  • Its shocking to see how much better the players of today are ...

  • the habs were a super team, they would have won no matter what... 70-12... 72-10... 71-13...64-21... 4 cups, two sweeps, pure domination...

  • Rick Macleish was injured as well for the finals , had they both been in the lineup it would have made a difference .

  • Why did they give Schultz 2 extra?

  • dont think this series would have been a sweep if parent was healthy. as it was the habs only won the first 3 games by one goal

  • @weeszel The series would have been MUCH closer if Bernie Parent was in the Philly net...and this is not from a Flyers fan but a Bruins fan. No doubt Dryden was the best goaltender of the 70's but Parent wasn't far behind. Wayne Stevenson wasn't in the same class and Philly suffered for it. If Parent was in net, it would have gone to 7 games and that last one would have been a toss-up. Remember, the Flyers, and not the Canadiens had won the previous 2 Coup de Stanley.

  • Dick Irvin mentions that Dave Schultz said that "more of this needs to go on" if the Flyers expected to make any headway in the series. What's Dave Schultz talking about? The Habs won the first three games by 1 goal. That's such a general comment from a player who probably thought that every team would be intimidated if the Flyers tried to bully them. The habs were better AND STRONGER, plain and simple and "more of this" wouldn't have changed anything.

  • Reggie Leach was Classic...

    Great Times For Flyers Fans......

    SUPER 70'S.....

  • Huge 1st goal by Leach to open the game...but Flyers fans wouldn't be cheering so much at the end of game however...:-)

  • I wish we had the whole game on Youtube.

  • I always wondered when Parent won the previous 2 Conn Smythe trophies, why he wouldn't be in there going for a third. He was on the bench if I'm not mistaken - he was hurting though. He didn't play as well earlier in the playoffs and Shero went with Stephenson.

  • no stuff on the ice - like ads

  • @Dunkleosteus9

thats for sure.the game then had suck plain boards and masks and equipment.i still think the goalie pads then were smaller than now.

  • AND RICK MACLEISH.

  • I'm wondeing how good of a series this would have been if the Flyers had a healthy Bernie Parent. If I'm not mistaken the first two games in Montreal went to overtime. Im guessing the Flyers win at least one of those two games if they have Parent. Then you are talking about a whole different series. I think the series at least goes six games if the Flyers have Parent. It's a shame because it would have been nice to see Parent go head to head with Ken Dryden

  • Theres a song by SuperTramp called "Dreamer"...go listen to it, you fucking idiot !

  • @Seed88 The First Two Games Did Not Go Into Overtime.

  • @winyguy You're right. I knew they were one goal games but, I wasn't sure whether or not they went into OT

  • @Seed88

That's a pretty biased assessment. The only surprise is why you didn't say the Flyers would have won the series if they had Parent.

  • Hi 5 man, I pull for the Flyers. I like fans that think objectively and realize what the true outcome is, not being a biased homer.

  • Danny Gallivan beautiful.

  • reggie leach has the best shot in nhl history in my eyes, i saw him shoot a puck over 100mph when he was almost 60 years old.

  • @420rulezz Where? When? How did you calculate the speed of the shot?

  • @420rulezz Who's your pharmacist? I loved Reggie too, but at this point in time, I love hallucinations even more.....

  • I agree with you, with Parent, they would have won games 1 and 3 for sure. Wayne stephenson lost game 3 due to that opening long shot goal which crippled Philadelphia's morale.

  • I remember Leach and that wicked shot he had coming off the right wing, man could he blaze em'.Still though, the Habs had too much depth for the Flyers in 76.They were a team stockpiled with 11 future hall of famers.Amzingly, they were even better in 77

  • very nice video

  • reggie leach was the sniper personified,a wicked shot .This year, the Habs dominated the regular season and playoffs, they did the next 3 years after this too

  • @wrappindude Actually, MacLeish was more of a sniper, Leach was a BAZOOKA. Still remember the night he scored FIVE against the Bruins in the playoffs. Does he STILL have the record for playoff goals in one season? What a shot! He was right up there with Bobby Hull in terms of goalies crapping themselves when he wound up at full steam. Thanx for the vid

  • Jari Kurri also scored 19 in the 84-85 playoffs, so Leach has part of the record.

  • The Riverton Rifle

  • i remember that game very well. Guy Lafleur and Pete Mahovlich put the Flyers away in the third period for a 5-3 victory. it was really sweet. the Flyers weren't so tough anymore.

  • Reggie Leach is the shit! Great coach, great guy, great hero.

  • habs won this game. swept broad street fairies 4 games to 0. Habs won 19th cup in Philly.

  • That puck did change directions a bit after hitting defenseman Guy Lapointe's stick. Still an incredible shot.

  • I was at this game, age 8. I think it was 5-3. Quite a depressing moment but this was the best Canadiens team ever. I think the Flyers led in all of these games.

  • Go Habs Go. Hey Flyers' fans, Get ready for another beating in 2008.

  • oops!

  • The first three games of this series were all one-goal decisions.

Philadelphia played admirably without Parent and MacLeish. I'm inclined to think Montreal would still have won, but would not have swept the Flyers.

Robinson neutralized Schultz, and Gainey even moreso with Clarke.

  • I think some of you flyer fans are forgetting what a great team the '76 habs were; that club was a helluva lot better than the '74 Bruins (more depth, more speed, more weapons up front and at the backend - and they might have been tougher, all-around, than either Boston or Philly). Frankly, even Parent's heroics were not going to be enough to beat Bowman's team 4 times in a two-week (or less) span.

  • You posted a senseful comment there, pal.

  • The Habs pulled out 3 OT wins to open these '76 finals. You understate the loss of HOF goalie and two-time defending Conn Smythe and Vezina winner, the amazing Bernie Parent in the prime of his career. You also overlook the absence of two-time Stanley cup playoff leading scorer, sniper Rick MacLeish. It's too bad the great Habs didn't get to dethrone the defending champs at full strength. Shero's Flyers peaked in January when they dismantled the Soviet Red Army team, salvaging pride for the NHL.

  • No. None of them were OT wins. They were just one-goal wins.

  • My bad. I morphed this series with the Candiens' 1993 Cup win over the LA Kings, where after dropping the first game, they won the next three in OT. Anyway, I take nothing away from the '76 champs: they were an awesome, dynasty team.

  • uh no.

Incidentally, Stephenson played extremely well in this series and kept it from really being a rout. Maybe Bernie steals one game for the flyers - but how many more can he realistically steal?

  • Nice goal. With Parent in net i think Philly could have won.

  • ironic name when you're lauding Parent...
