THANKS for sharing this awesome trailer with us! I haven't seen this movie shown on TV in years; nor have it ever seen it available on home video. I think it contains Robert Ryan's BEST screen performance. And who could resist sexy Fay Spain & Tina Louise (who later played "Ginger" on TV's "Gilligan Island"). The book is mostly forgotten today, but it & other Erskine Caldwell works (like "Tobacco Road") were HUGE best-sellers in their day. I hope you have your HAPPIEST holiday season EVER!
You're obviously a person of good taste & refined distinction, Techno, since you share my enthusiasm for the late great Bob Ryan's performance in this late 50's classic! I was able to watch some of it this past Sunday on Turner Classic Movies (sadly, didn't see the first hour) & it was as good as I remember! What a lusty bunch o' Southerners Ty Ty & his family were! And a person ain't lived till they seen Michael Landon as an ALBINO! Great Jumpin Jehosaphat!!!
Hi JubalCalif--I'm responding under another name here,(before I was TechnoToxic) .Anyway, I saw this film for the very first time ever on TCM--I was blown away right from the start by Ryan's characterization, and then the whole movie--with all of its subplots--just drew men in. Aldo Ray was damn good also. Great, great movie. Ryan, the most underated actor there ever was--he wasn't even NOMINATED for his performasnce in this movie. He was the best. Thnx for your response.
@TechnoToxicRaver Ryan is a revelation here. So often typecast as a straightforward heavy, his Ty-Ty is funny, charming, tender and moving. For richness and depth, Ryan's only comparable performance is Larry Slade in "The Iceman Cometh." OK, granted I've not read the Caldwell novel, though I've read some plot summaries. Even so, this is a good film, with generally strong peformances and sound direction --
I couldnt' agree with you more! I'm currently reading the original 1933 novel & Robert Ryan is perfection as Ty Ty! TCM sometimes shows this movie but I always seem to miss it. Hopefully I'll get the chance to see the whole flick one of these days. Wonderful cast! Thanks for your insightful comment! :-)
