Are these guys ever going to learn a new riff or what? Good song till the outro. Come on, heard it in practically every gaslight song. I already know what to expect in every chorus on the new album.. keep being unique and im sure ull last more than two major records...
@superchampable Oh my dear... I'm sorry, but I don't agree with you... The End-Part of this song is sooo amazing! Its GASLIGHT!!! The Beginging_Part of the Song reminds me on "American Slang" and the End on "Sink or Swimm" So, its a perfect Mix of Old and New Stuff... And you have to know, that I'm a very big Fan of "Sink or Swim" :-)
@Skaurus The first 7 songs in the 59 sound use the same riff as a chorus or a verse and once again in a new song to name a few. It all sounds the same with different lyrics. Ya real talented. Its too bad because they have a unique sound and potential. All I want to hear is the band play something new. Wont somebody agree?
@superchampable At first: Respect! You really know how the music of gaslight anthem works.. As i played the Song of 59 Sound on the Guitar i was a little bit shocked, beacause they used the same Chords in every Song again and again and it even doesn't sounds boring. Its easy to write good varied Songs with 10 diffrent Chords, but its difficult to write variet Song with only 4 Chords.. And by the way: The Roots of Gaslight Anthem is definitely Punk...
write the rest of it as he said that Ian Perkins knows everything a person could possibly know about him. If you listen to the song, you can hear where the style changes very slightly as Ian is a musician not a lyricist.
Just in case anyone's interested into why he got others to write those songs:
1930 was originally a song called She Coulda Raised The Titanic by This Charming Man (Brian's pre-Gaslight band) in which Mike Volpe was the guitarist.
With Cherry Blossoms Brian said in an interview that he came out of his garage where he was writing the songs with Ian and his hand was shaking and he felt like he was about to vomit because of the 'ghosts' that Elsie was forcing him to remember so he got Ian to...
You should hear some of the stuff that he wrote when he was 15, its incredible! Brian writes all his own lyrics except for Cherry Blossoms, in which Ian Perkins wrote half of it and 1930 in which Mike Volpe helped. He says that he wants the people that he 'worships' to know how he feels about them and that the lines he uses and the references he makes are tributes to those people's talent.
@afzoomie67 Interviews and a reasonably long chat with him in person. He's a great guy with an amazing sense of humour. Although the only, and I mean only, bad thing about him is that when his hair gets long, it looks like Justin Bieber's. (He admitted that it did as well)
@afzoomie67 I went to see the Revival Tour at a tiny venue and he came out about an hour before hand and chatted to everyone in the queue! I'm happy to admit that that was the best moment of my life! If you do ever get the chance, you won't be disappointed. He also let me touch his hair after I commented that it looked like Justin Bieber's whilst saying something like, "It's not even dirty, you should see it after I haven't washed it in a few days." I love him!
@afzoomie67 Brian promises in his blog that he will, assuming that nothing bad has happened that day, coming out either before or after shows. If you get the chance to see Gaslight or what ever tour he's doing, go a bit early and wait around. You never know!
@Roo1604 I am jealous! you could talk to mr fallon in person :) I wish I could meet him one day too:) he is such an inspiration and being at least little bit like him would be incredible :)
Wonder if he's learned to write his own lyrics, hope so... Despite what the big boys say: Biloxi will never perish. Yes, we've seen each other. Good luck to you. ;)
@nomad677 mad? No, just been listening since "sink or swim". a few too many allusions. hes gets a lot of flak for it. i could cite sources, but i haven't the time.
@finitenoir So have I and I can assure you Brian writes all of his own lyrics, he may use references to lines from Bruce Springsteen but he certainly writes all of his own songs.
@nomad677 don't get me wrong, i'm a fan of the group. i went to coachella in '09 *just* to see them... it's still great music. i just wish they'd stop with the allusions.
@finitenoir Yes he does use references from Tom Petty, Bob Seger, Meatloaf etc but there all just references. He states that he uses them in many interviews because he grew up listening to them. And aswell, what allusions are these? The band are still just 4 jersey boys who has had work as hard as hell to be where they are now.
@nomad677 'references'? listen to 'our fathers' sons'. he just lifted the chorus in it's entirety from 'The Jeffersons' and then 'Surrender'. GA is one of my favorite bands, but he totally steals lines.
@spgilbertful 'ref·er·ence Noun: The action of mentioning or alluding to something' so he was mentioning a chorus from the jeffersons? Brian even says in his interviews that a lot of his songs are very strongly influenced by bands he grew up listening too so this is how he is paying his respects, by mentioning them in his songs.
@nomad677 No....not a reference. This is the lyrics to the Jeffersons: Well we're movin on up, To the east side. To a deluxe apartment in the sky. Movin on up To the east side. We finally got a piece of the pie. This is the chorus to our 'Our Fathers' Sons': Well we're movin on up, To the east side. To a deluxe apartment in the sky. Movin on up To the east side. We finally got a piece of the pie. That's just a straight lift.
@spgilbertful first off, to a deluxe apartment in the sky is not a part of the chorus to that song.
secondly, our fathers sons is a song that was written before the 59 sound was..before they got big, back when they were young and just a small band..before they really matured as artists and gained their own identity
@vettedude418 oh....i thought the 'apartment' part was in there too. i haven't heard it in a while. i do know that the 2nd chorus is verbatim from 'Surrender' by Cheap Trick. and yeah, I know it's older, but he still lifts entire lines from existing songs. just listen to The Horrible Crowes CD...it's all over the place on there too. Again, I am a huge fan of Brian Fallon, but he goes waaaaaay beyond 'references' in his songs.
@spgilbertful at the end of the day he isn't trying to steal the lines and claim them as his own.... he's mentioning them in one of his songs.... aka a reference.
If talent went parallel with success at all this band would be playing to full stadiums. But as long as they keep making music that changes my life, well that's good enough for me!
I wish I didn't think this way, and I really love this new sound, but it doesnt feel like gaslight anthem to me. The 59 sound still feels like home, it still had energy. Sink or swim still has my heart, that youthfulness just set them apart from everyone else. I wish they kept that, but everyone grows up. Still their voice still blows me away/
@owertwentyfive The sound may have changed a lot, but the feel behind the music is still the same. These guys are still the same, they've just grown as musicians.
@cdudeNYR Yahhh brians come out and said " just cause you heard this song , don't think we are making a blues record , this is the odd ball kinda like film noir on 59 sound " granted thats paraphrased but pretty close
