I haven't really heard anything different from Soundgarden's either...but Chris Carnell makes up both bands with his unique voice. Cornell definitely does sound on and off. Especially as he gets older. But when you think about the extreme amount of stress he puts on his vocal cords, it makes sense. In Soundgarden and Audioslave Cornell is flat-out belting at least half of the time, and no matter how good you are that takes a toll on your voice. Plus, the older he gets, the worse his voice is going to be, and that's just the way it is, especially with vocal parts as extreme as his.

I am guessing that you have not heard any of Chris's singing in the last 8 years or so. His GOD status as a premier vocalist has diminished to a faint croak. His iconic instrument is sadly a frickin fart compared to when he held the crown. I have no idea why he continues to slaughter and blaspheme the bad ass tunes he wrote.
