I love how the "old money" party are judging the "new money" who are not acting as composed as them, I wasn't aware of the extent of class issues within the US. Interesting book to read.
@sharplinker I strongly suggest you read the book, it's got so much more in it than the movie does. I started and finished it on a 7 hour train journey.
Jello molds were a sign of prosperity in that era. I forget how I a=came across the history of Jello but its quite interesting they put that in there.
When I visited Rosecliff, the mansion in Newport RI where much of this movie was filmed and saw the ballroom, I instantly thought of the scene where Gatsby and Daisy dance and kiss. It's a beautiful house.
Just finished the book, which was great. So I decided to watch the movie. For those of you who're watching the movie instead of reading the book, you're really missing out. The movie is good but the book is great.
Gee, I don't mind watching film adaptation and reading sparknotes, but at least I read the book first before I do so because it gives a better sense of details and respect for the work the author has given. Don't get me wrong, the director of the movie obviously has deep respect for the book. If only teens of society would stop being superficial (like the characters in the book) and actually appreciate the book.
@BigTysHouseOfTech I am your teacher and I will only ask questions which anwsers are left out of the film, since the movie covers about one third of the novel...he he he
Daisy's comment that Gatsby had earned his fortune through a string of drug stores is a tip-off to the reader hat he is indeed a bootlegger, which is often lost on modern audiences who don't know that during Prohibition drug stores had an excemption that allowed them to sell alcoholic beverages for "medicinal purposes." Routinely violated by doctors and pharmacists alike, many drug store marquees that you know today became huge chains in the '20s through "legal" bootlegging.
@JBtheLAMBO: I think CVS may be a modern corporate creation born after Prohibition, but I don't know the history of the company. Think of companies that would have been big back from the '20s through the '60s, before all the corporate mergers caused many of them to disappear.
@aarfeld Very good comment, quite correct. I found it fascinating to look on the beaches of Shelter Island. So many very old broken rum bottles! They had to ditch pretty often.
I know it's a movie and they have to add in some of what you don't see in the book, but I love how the affair is done in the book. Nick knows it's going on. Jay gets rid of all his servants cause Daisy's coming over and he doesn't want them judged. And you just imagine it. This is cheesy. It's interesting how the parts that Fitzgerald wrote are probably the best scenes!
@00Boombang00 Yes, she knows. She just doesn't do anything about it because she doesn't want her marriage broken up. That would mean giving up her life of comfort and social status.
@The4thGuy ...no, i mean tom...the guy with the mustache and daisey's husband..nick is a spazzed out observer and nonachiever, tom is the sort of person who gets somewhere and the sort of person i met in school...some of his actions may not be admirable, but he is what you meet in the better circles of todays world
@The4thGuy ...uncle ricco...had to look it up..think its not complimentary...but seriously, if you go to a private high school or a professional course at a good university, it will be filled with toms and not too many nicks...it's not good but thats the way it is..all my relatives with any money are toms
@jethro035181 Does having money make a person virtuous, even if he did nothing to earn it and is completely lacking in empathy for those who haven't had his advantages? Tom is banal, priggish, racist and hypocritical, and if he lost his money (as one would hope his kind did in the Crash of '29), he would be thoroughly unremarkable. With or without money, Nick would always have his perceptiveness, honesty and decency, and Gatsby would have "an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness."
@Seasass ..thanks for your comment..it's a little idealistic..i've had personal experience of a woman like daisey, hence my loathing of fitzgerald & zelda and gatsby & daisey, and all lost cause relationships..nick has all the gifts and graces but does nothing with them..money isn't virtue, but it gives you time to cultivate grace and virtue..i had to work for all of mine but i still identify with tom..i hope you manage to keep your idealism as someone has to buy those danielle steele books
@jethro035181 You seem much more familiar with Steele's work than I am :). Money does indeed enable one to cultivate grace and virtue. It's a powerful indictment against Tom that he has done neither. He just lives off inherited wealth and looks back on his glory as a college football player. (If you had read Fitzgerald, that wouldn't be a subject of debate.) You're right about Daisy, though, and in the end, the novel suggests that she and Tom are perfectly matched: insipid and rich.
@starmochieater09 The orchestra is playing The Sheik of Araby, and I believe Daisy is singing the last lyrics of the song, without a sheik, without a sheik.
@Jaymeizterflash01 ..You just caught Hollywood recycling star-types again. Brad pitt has become that 'type' now, so they can keep the movie machine rolling, and because Redford has become too old to play these roles. You won't see Pitt playing anything like the roles of Twelve Monkeys again.
