How about this: vote for expenditures with income tax forms? For the first $30,000 of income tax, you fill in discrete percentages devoted to all major gov't expenditures on your own tax form; if you want 5% to go to defense, and 30% to go to a SS, Medicare or education etc., then the CBO allots expenditures to follow with public disclosures for transparency for all citizens. The $30G limit would prevent superrich beneficiaries of high profit industries from exercising undue influence.

This is not complicated. For the period that the baby boomers are retiring RAISE THE TAX (it 's NOT a dirty concept); SIMPLE tax rise -- cut the tax to ZERO on the first $10,000 you make and REMOVE the CAP on social security taxes (all you tax refusniks and benefit cutters do know that salaries over $100,000 STOP PAYING social security taxes, didn't you?) Once the "bubble" is past, lower it again. And cut the military down so we only spend 1/2 what the rest of the world does instead of MORE!
We have to cut some parts of social security and medicare. 43.9% of the federal budget is entitlement/welfare spending. Its the largest and fastest growing portion of the budget. And since we have a debt to GDP ratio at 94.7%, $1.3 trillion deficit, and a sluggish economy (sluggish economy means less tax revenue) we have to cut some portions of it. Everything from the budget is gonna have to suffer some cuts pretty soon if the U.S. is serious about our financial crisis.

SS and Medicare need reformed now. There are not enough revenues coming in to pay for them now, and we have an aging population. I have an idea to save Social Security. I would not raise the retirement age,rather I would encourage people to work past 65 by--not having to pay any Federal taxes past 65. You wouldn't pay into Social Security either. Everything you earn is yours!

I support the cuts that the report includes. The bulk of the report is rock solid, and it's still not enough to bring the deficit under control under 2050.

This budget outline doesn't increase the minimal age for social security either. It also cuts 100 billion from the defense budget plus 31 billion by reducing government staff and contractors plus over 69 billion elsewhere. That's how serious this is.

So if majority of politicians are elected for promising things that cost money, but instead of paying with new taxes, SS is used to pay for the promises, then exactly how can the 65y.o. person argue to get his dollar back twice?
Many argue that SS is like a savings account, but it's not. If it were a savings or an investment system or insurance, the money would have been there now.
However it is a pyramid, because instead of saving and investing money, it relies on new people to join the pyramid (by force of gov't through income taxes) and to pay to the people who have gone through the system already.
Imagine that there are NO new people joining. Could gov't pay their SS 'obligation' to anybody then? no.
SS is a scam - the money is spent and none is invested. The 'surplus' is a ruse, there can't be a surplus where there is no money.

@tomitstube But we are eliminating all income taxes hopefully in the next 2-4 years in Switzerland entirely. The income taxes now do not exceed 9.5% anywhere in any canton, and there is a strong enough movement to lower them next year by half and to eliminate them entirely in the next few years.

How about this: vote for expenditures with income tax forms? For the first $30,000 of income tax, you fill in discrete percentages devoted to all major gov't expenditures on your own tax form; if you want 5% to go to defense, and 30% to go to a SS, Medicare or education etc., then the CBO allots expenditures to follow with public disclosures for transparency for all citizens. The $30G limit would prevent superrich beneficiaries of high profit industries from exercising undue influence.

For the period that the baby boomers are retiring RAISE THE TAX (it 's NOT a dirty concept); SIMPLE tax rise -- cut the tax to ZERO on the first $10,000 you make and REMOVE the CAP on social security taxes (all you tax refusniks and benefit cutters do know that salaries over $100,000 STOP PAYING social security taxes, didn't you?) We have to cut some parts of social security and medicare. 43.9% of the federal budget is entitlement/welfare spending. Its the largest and fastest growing portion of the budget. And since we have a debt to GDP ratio at 94.7%, $1.3 trillion deficit, and a sluggish economy (sluggish economy means less tax revenue) we have to cut some portions of it. Everything from the budget is gonna have to suffer some cuts pretty soon if the U.S. is serious about our financial crisis.

I am disabled, on SSDI and am still paying taxes on my disability insurance.I am on Medicare, AARP, Medicaid for disabled people. I have paid into this and then when I need it then you cut it?!? I have an idea to save Social Security. I would not raise the retirement age,rather I would encourage people to work past 65 by--not having to pay any Federal taxes past 65. You wouldn't pay into Social Security either. Everything you earn is yours!

@Mika20 That isn't the point here. The fact of the matter is that even with all of the cuts in this proposal we would still only reach a balanced budget in 2035, and that is with a total deficit reduce of over 3 trillion dollars by 2020.
This budget outline doesn't increase the minimal age for social security either. It also cuts 100 billion from the defense budget plus 31 billion by reducing government staff and contractors plus over 69 billion elsewhere. That's how serious this is.

So if the money is taken out of all that incoming SS and spent on other stuff, that's it, SS money is gone.
Don't pretend that there is some way to get that money back. So you have to rely on SS being paid by workers for retirees to get their checks, but if there is fewer and fewer workers, well, then the pyramid ends and the last people get the hot potato

There is no right to SS or medicare. There is no right to anything that has to be given to you by taking it away from others.
So if you are a young person, why would you be for SS? SS is welfare, it comes from the same place, there is no existing SS investment, all SS money is spent immediately as it comes in, so it IS a giant pyramid scheme because it relies on new people to pay for the ones who are already in the system.
There is NO money, Lebowski, it's not there, never was. It must end.

If somebody is 65y.o. today, that means they paid into the system with their income taxes for somewhere near 45 years, but at the same time they participated in the gov't of the country by casting votes.
So if majority of politicians are elected for promising things that cost money, but instead of paying with new taxes, SS is used to pay for the promises, then exactly how can the 65y.o. person argue to get his dollar back twice?

Many argue that SS is like a savings account, but it's not. If it were a savings or an investment system or insurance, the money would have been there now.
However it is a pyramid, because instead of saving and investing money, it relies on new people to join the pyramid (by force of gov't through income taxes) and to pay to the people who have gone through the system already.
Imagine that there are NO new people joining. Could gov't pay their SS 'obligation' to anybody then? no.

@romanmir01 SS is a societal safety net. If you wipe yourself out financially by the time you are 65, with no net, you are effectively dead. You might be okay with that, but I'm not. Most people aren't. The society within which you live and are apart of has decided that is not an acceptable fate and you need to come to grips with that.
SS is a financially sound and solvent instrument that actually has significant surplus.

I used to have a business in US, I have 2 businesses in Canada and now one of them is growing in Europe, Russia and Germany and the headquarters are in a place with no income taxes at all.
I got rid of all my US holdings, including USD because I believe USD is headed for total annihilation, the US gov't and Fed will kill US currency, wipe it out, and other currencies are following.
I don't trust gov't with my money at all for a second.

The only way for it to function if taxes were no longer collected today would be by borrowing and printing money, and that's NOT functioning, that's just deferring the taxes to workers for a later date with an interest

@tomitstube But we are eliminating all income taxes hopefully in the next 2-4 years in Switzerland entirely. The income taxes now do not exceed 9.5% anywhere in any canton, and there is a strong enough movement to lower them next year by half and to eliminate them entirely in the next few years.
All of the things you are talking about have nothing to do with the federal gov't except military and justice, and those are paid for with sales taxes.

the defense industry in america is now over 50% of all discretionary spending.
sales taxes are "state" taxes with local counties and municipalities tacking on for their specific needs. sales taxes don't pay for the military, interstates, or federal courts.

The simple fact is; thanks to a tax and spend liberal president, we now have a 1.8 trillion dollar debt, and cuts to government spending will have to be made in order to balance the budget. The liberals whine and cry about it, but do they know any other areas to cut the budget? No, all they do is complain and say we have to keep spending on welfare and entitlement programs so people won't have to work, and then they can vote Democrat as thanks. Dems exploded the deficit for political reasons.
