My advice for new riders like me is to not panic if your caught in that situation...its all common sense if you feel like you cant handle it pull over or slow down and let people pass you.
This happened to me about 3 months ago going east on hwy 50 to dodge city, ks. We get horrible wind in SW KS. I was leaning the bike to the left quite a bit while going straight...it was the first time i had ridden and the wind was about 40mph. Scared the shit out of me when i would get hit by a gust and my bike wanted to go off the road. When i finally got to town i pulled into a gas station and a lady that had been driving behind me said she could tell i was struggling badly lol.
My father, wife, and I were riding home in a serious downpour (soaked in seconds) back home in Ohio and there were also serious gusts of wind going on at the same time. Several of the gusts were so hard we were thrown into the oncoming lane of traffic. Luckily, we were way out of town with no other traffic around. If you ever encounter BIG gusts of wind and there is traffic to worry about, slow way down or get off the road.
My bike is my only transport so i pretty much have to ride in everything, I found that transferring your weight onto the footpegs helps allot, i just sorta go to stand up, but i don't actually stand up I just put more weight on the footpegs to keep all the weight lower down.
@daffee360 That's a good idea! I guess that would create a lower center of gravity. I'm definitely trying this next time I'm out in windy conditions. Thanks!
I rode in a tornado with 70 mph crosswinds on the highway in a downpour! I damn near had my knee down fighting the wing going STRAIGHT! Wouldn't recommend it...
@AridersLife Thanks! My first bike was a naked bike. After riding for just 30 minutes in high winds (especially riding into the wind) my neck would be crazy sore from being pummeled about. :)
You must get really punished with the wind there. Scary.

@krayziesensei How the hell would that create a lower center of gravity..?

@pacrat90 Because the weight of his body is on the foot pegs instead of the seat.
