God.. Are there any adequate words for this sublime piece? Zappa.. So prolific. So much comedy in his music nestled into some of the most beautiful sounds ever created. This synthesis is unparalleled. I almost cries the first time I heard Son of Orange County. Sick sick bad mofo.
I seldom play acoustic guitar, and this performance (the only complete take from the session) is a rare example of a performance in this setting. The tune itself was composed in a hotel room in Stockholm, Sweden, sometimes in November, 1971, as a result of borrowing the Martin guitar (owned then by mark Volman) and experimenting on a day off during the tour. I eventually traded mark a Telecaster for the Martin. It now sits unused in a dark corner of the studio. (F. zappa)
Been looking for the original version of this for awhile. Here it is. Thanks so much for posting this!! I miss Frank so much! You helped bring him back for a moment. And moments are all we have. PeaceLoveJoy..... R
Absolutley genius, Frank is a legendé. Wish he had more songs like this, although Black napkins and Zoot allures are both awesome tracks too. Peace bro
I wonder what he meant by "sleep dirt" When I was younger I always thought it meant something like "sleep dirty" but now I think it might have a deeper meaning such as "sleeping in dirt(in dust)", being dead that is, or maybe something else, like "sleep dirt" meaning a mandatory death for men(as they say men was made out of dust)
Knowing Zappa, he wouldn't go to such lengths to embed a deep meaning like that into a song. It's too pretentious for him. I think what he meant by sleep dirt was exactly what is depicted--dirt of the night--when man sleeps, the dirt arises from the floor and goes about its business.
You may wonder what business it might have. I think the song itself tells all that one would want to know about the melancholy life of Mr. Sleep Dirt and all his dirty comrades...
never heard a guitarist as inventive as frank and love this

@Lillogambino Sleep dirt... it's the crumbs in the corner of your eyes in the morning... you gently rub it out as you awake and look around.
Pretty sweet song for a Contractual Obligation Record.
