He does know how to milk anote, My parents felt the same way about his great looks and voice. I know others have their own opinions about tenors but I love his lisp and rubato that other tenors do not have or do not have that much of. He does not speak with a lisp however. Does anyone know if he ever had children or if there is a fan club for him?????
Oh dear, THIS IS MANRICO, really. A giant tenor, a voice that just as brilliantly calls to battle as it vows love and protection to his beloved bride.
And he even looks like Manrico and Siegfried!
Thank you very much for preserving this recording here. The Stretta has been my very favourite aria since I discovered Verdi´s music at the age of 15/16 years.
L'ho pensata anch'io come te, in passato. Lasciamo che cantino, Corelli è oltre. P.S. Io l'ho visto, a Parma.
This is the first video I watched on YT, and it's possibly still my favorite. It certainly made me fall in love with Corelli and still makes me VERY happy.
I realize taste is subjective, but what kind of neanderthal do you have to be to "thumbs down" this magnificent work? Eight down votes? I wonder if they all live under the same bridge!
Corelli is one of those voices that give me what Ive come to call Spiritual Orgasms. It's when you hear this high note, you lose your breath and widen your eyes, you literally feel your soul quiver and then, tears and panting!!! some call it Stendhal Syndrome.. I call it spiritual orgasm. BRAVO CARO MAESTRO!!!
@CuteMcBeauty moreover, I think, the best and unique peculiarity of Franco Corelli is the unrivalled capability to give the right accent and expression to the single words, specially when the role is heroic and brave or romantic (the way he sings words like "amor" - i.e. a te o cara, Bellini or "je t' ame" (i.e. la chancon du fleur, Carmen, in addition to an exuberant and beautiful voice and correctly used .....is really moving inside
@chaten65 I don't think this is from a complete Trovatore. I think it's from a TV programme where he lipsynched to recordings of various arias from his favourite roles (Aida, Turandot etc.).
@tehen162 Yes, the audio is taken from a complete Trovatore-recording from EMI with the singers you mention, but I don't think they filmed it complete - that's what I meant :)
I agree - This is clearly the 64 EMI recording with Gabriella Tucci as Leonora ...but the woman lip-synching here doesn't look like the real Garbiella Tucci (at least at the time of this taping). Doesn't matter ...the singing is so superb ...who cares! We'll never have another Franco - And he simply owned this role!
Corelli god among gods...this is not a once in a lifetime voice it is a once in the history of the world and no other will ever compare....he was the best and ppl can say all they want about bad technique but the fact is that if he didn't have a perfect technique he would not have been able to the dim.'s and gental high singing he did...i think the tech was so advance that we have yet to understand it
yes, his so called "scoops" are actually an old italian techique that today is labeled as "belting" "scooping" "over singing" or "straining". in reality, it is nothing of the sort (although it is a rather advanced technique requiring a very dramatic set of chords. I wouldn't try it as a lyric baritone =)
Corelli Rapes Face! By far my favorite. I love Domingo and Del Manaco as well. Pav and Jussi are also great though only technique wise. They jsut dont have the supreme face rape power! :)
MOLTO, MOLTO, MOLTO, MOLTO, MOLTO meglio di Del Monaco. CORELLI era UNICO, STUPENDO, FAVOLOSO, IMMORTALE, DIVINO, GENIALE !!!
@eurydike About Corelli, this is probably a video made by Rai italian TV. The music is: Il Trovatore directed by Thomas Schippers, with Merrill, Tucci, Simionato, EMI 1965.
No one, and I mean no one, had a set of lungd like Corelli. This is a man who could reach the very back rows of the balcony of Metropolitan Opera House, the largest opera house in the world. A heroic figure with 747 engines for lungs, he makes other tenors look like they are missing some testosterone. No disrespect towards other greats like Pavarotti, Bjorling, etc. (whom I really love), but Corelli's lion like voice simply blows the others away in sheer power and passion.
omG! i just corelli, he is a bit heavy and some times the voice doesnt run how i like but i just love his voice and the way he does all these heavy arias
I remember when I got my Cd with Corelli, "Heroes", back in 1997. I was driving my car while this piece was playing out loudly, and I really had to pull the car over, because I was in a deep joy full laughter... I just couldn't believe my ears! He voice is for me still one of the greatest inspirations.
as great a voice as Corelli was, I can't say that my first reaction to it is laughter. usually the first thing I think of listening to a high dramatic voice is a storm or something epic.
Tell me someone, was this performance a lip sync? No biggie, Corelli was God on earth. Just wanted to know. Del Monaco has a lot of lip sync stuff up here.
Bocelli, a fine Italian pop singer, doesn't deserve to have his name mentioned along with that of MAESTRO FRANCO CORELLI. FC had a rare voice. From the Gods. I like Andrea in Con Te Partiro and Caruso etc. But no comparison, please.
Oh, my God, Bocelli is an amateur compared to the great Corelli. Nobody has sung this aria like Franco corelli. He is absolutely the best for Il trovatore, Andrea Chenier, Carmen, Turandot and one of the best for Forza del Destino
I don't see that corelli taught bocelli. Can you cite? What I did see, in the amusing little wikipedia article about how great Bocelli is, was a good summary of why he's NOT great in a collection of critics' assessments. Here goes!
In describing Bocelli's singing, New York Times music critic Bernard Holland noted, "the tone is rasping, thin and, in general, poorly supported. Even the most modest upward movement thins it even more, signalling what appears to be the onset of strangulation.
To his credit, Mr Bocelli sings mostly in tune. But his phrasing tends toward carelessness and rhythmic jumble... The diction is not clear."[59] Furthermore, Holland observed that "The critic's duty is to report that Mr Bocelli is not a very good singer." The Associated Press reported "Passion? Yes. Power. No. Bocelli's voice - though robust in spirit and precisely in tune, even in the upper register - had a thin quality that never opened up."
Similarly, classical music critic Andrew Clement found Bocelli's studio opera recordings consistently disappointing in quality: "Bocelli's profoundly unmusical contribution, with its unvaryingly coarse tone, wayward intonation and never a phrase properly shaped, fatally undermines all their contributions."Anne Midgette of the NY Times noted "a thinness of voice, oddly anemic phrasing (including shortchanging upper notes of phrases in a most untenorial manner), a curious lack of expression."
An audio commentary by Midgette providing a comparison of Bocelli's tone and technique with Luciano Pavarotti's appears below (see the article). According to the commentary, Bocelli's tone and technique is not as firm or full as Pavarotti's. And Bocelli's singing of the high note in the passage sounds "squeezed" as opposed to the "ringing" quality Pavarotti achieves when singing the same note in the passage...
Bocelli? What the fk is going on here? Bocelli is a "Pop" singer- Period. Pavarotti should never have sung it if he can't manage the Di Quella Pira- and to me (yes, i heard him LIVE) could not. Corelli (live) was exciting as hell... better than what you're seeing and hearing here. Not since thae days of MILANOV and MARIO DEL MONACO have i felt like jumping out of my seat at the end of Di Quella Pira. And many times did. SO, as Maria Montez said in (The Cobra Woman)... "I Have Spoken".
Serggio123, question: Is she Stella or Tucci? She sounds like Tucci but looks like Stella. I can't see her full frontal face here, so it's hard to tell.
They are probably all lip-synching to a pre-existing recording, but at least we can see this divine singer acting. And the acting, too, is divine.

Qui nell' "la morte a me parrà" e nell' "all'armi" raggiunge livelli mai raggiunti da nessuno, soprattutto nel tenuto e nel diminuendo.

Corelli god among gods...this is not a once in a lifetime voice it is a once in the history of the world and no other will ever compare....he was the best and ppl can say all they want about bad technique but the fact is that if he didn't have a perfect technique he would not have been able to the dim.'s and gental high singing he did...i think the tech was so advance that we have yet to understand it
vocetenor 1 year ago 18
@vocetenor
yes, his so called "scoops" are actually an old italian techique that today is labeled as "belting" "scooping" "over singing" or "straining". in reality, it is nothing of the sort (although it is a rather advanced technique requiring a very dramatic set of chords.

I remember when I got my Cd with Corelli, "Heroes", back in 1997. I was driving my car while this piece was playing out loudly, and I really had to pull the car over, because I was in a deep joy full laughter... I just couldn't believe my ears! He voice is for me still one of the greatest inspirations.
bloydaage 2 years ago 28
@bloydaage
as great a voice as Corelli was, I can't say that my first reaction to it is laughter. usually the first thing I think of listening to a high dramatic voice is a storm or something epic.

Franco Corelli = best Manrico ever
listen to those high c's...no one can match that. Such a masculine aria, his high c's in di quella pira make me want to go slay a wooly mammoth.

corelli was the BEST....taught Bocelli (my 2nd fav :-)

...Bocelli is your 2nd fav? How can you compare Corelli and Bocelli?????? Bocelli is not even a real Tenor...
dg6da 2 years ago
Of course, once again, Bocelli is not a real tenor. He could do something else except singing!!
MrRafguar 2 years ago
was never comparing the two...like apples and oranges...Franco is my all time fav and i enjoy bocelli (his pupil) 2nd...
stevenfudd 2 years ago
Thank you dg6da for saying the obvious.
Bocelli, a fine Italian pop singer, doesn't deserve to have his name mentioned along with that of MAESTRO FRANCO CORELLI. FC had a rare voice. From the Gods. I like Andrea in Con Te Partiro and Caruso etc. But no comparison, please.
joelweisberg 2 years ago 3
Amen.
RoseBlackWarlock 2 years ago
Oh, my God, Bocelli is an amateur compared to the great Corelli. Nobody has sung this aria like Franco corelli. He is absolutely the best for Il trovatore, Andrea Chenier, Carmen, Turandot and one of the best for Forza del Destino
MrRafguar 2 years ago 4
I don't see that corelli taught bocelli. Can you cite? What I did see, in the amusing little wikipedia article about how great Bocelli is, was a good summary of why he's NOT great in a collection of critics' assessments. Here goes!
In describing Bocelli's singing, New York Times music critic Bernard Holland noted, "the tone is rasping, thin and, in general, poorly supported. Even the most modest upward movement thins it even more, signalling what appears to be the onset of strangulation.
aaronsande 2 years ago
To his credit, Mr Bocelli sings mostly in tune. But his phrasing tends toward carelessness and rhythmic jumble... The diction is not clear."[59] Furthermore, Holland observed that "The critic's duty is to report that Mr Bocelli is not a very good singer." The Associated Press reported "Passion? Yes. Power. No. Bocelli's voice - though robust in spirit and precisely in tune, even in the upper register - had a thin quality that never opened up."
aaronsande 2 years ago
Similarly, classical music critic Andrew Clement found Bocelli's studio opera recordings consistently disappointing in quality: "Bocelli's profoundly unmusical contribution, with its unvaryingly coarse tone, wayward intonation and never a phrase properly shaped, fatally undermines all their contributions."Anne Midgette of the NY Times noted "a thinness of voice, oddly anemic phrasing (including shortchanging upper notes of phrases in a most untenorial manner), a curious lack of expression."
aaronsande 2 years ago
An audio commentary by Midgette providing a comparison of Bocelli's tone and technique with Luciano Pavarotti's appears below (see the article). According to the commentary, Bocelli's tone and technique is not as firm or full as Pavarotti's. And Bocelli's singing of the high note in the passage sounds "squeezed" as opposed to the "ringing" quality Pavarotti achieves when singing the same note in the passage...
And that's Bocelli, pwnd. ;P
aaronsande 2 years ago
StuartLou 2 years ago 15
Absolutely, my friend, you'll get no argument from me! I wasn't the one who blasphemed by bringing Vocelli up on a Corelli clip. LOL

Serggio123, question: Is she Stella or Tucci? She sounds like Tucci but looks like Stella. I can't see her full frontal face here, so it's hard to tell.

As far as know (based on Seghers), she is Tucci (both voice and picture).

Corelli is simply the best.
No other tenor has had the high notes or intensity of this man. It shakes one to the core.
