2:48 video tribute to life of Doris Day (born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff; April 3, 1922). Song is her singing her 1945 and first #1 hit Sentimental Journey.
@et7waage1 This is my favorite version of Sentimental Journey .. I really love this one. I just have so much fun doing this ... thank you for watching and enjoying them !! You've brought a great big smile to my face today !!
This wonderful song oozes so much nostalgic craving, a real yearning for the past, when seemingly life wasn't half as complicated... love it... In fact it'd also play perfectly in a Woody Allen period piece... ! Many stars dear friend... manfread, xoxo p.s. love your background of Doris and Terry too... beautiful !!
@manfreadfilms Thank you manfread. This is my favorite version from Doris. I really love what they did with it. It certainly is nostalgic.... makes you want to go back in time a bit. That background picture is from her book tour in 1975. Always wanted to use it. Thank you for the stars dear friend ... hope you have a wonderful week.
I am glad she sent you a letter! It is so thriling to receive something like this from somebody you admire so much!! What did she write about? In my letter she started with: "I can`t tell you how much I enjoyed your sweet letter!" Ah, my heart melt....
@mookee85 This video is one of the ones I sent her.
I sent the video's before Thanksgiving and she said they watched them and she had the best Thanksgiving she'd ever had ! (wow ... made me feel so good) Then she said she would treasure them forever .... and said thank you about 6 times. I was just ... well ... in shock ! What a really really sweet lady she is !!
According to a little research I made, DD recorded this two times: 1944 and 1964. If you heard of something in the 50s, maybe it was a live recording on radio or TV?
Thank you for the nice clip! Love Doris Day. I am very happy to have received a letter from her incl. an autograph!!! That was one of the happiest moments of my live!
@mookee85 Happy you enjoyed it. I just sent Doris some of my video's and received a wonderful letter from her .. so I know what you mean.. I was thrilled !
*This* Doris Day never sang with Roy Rogers or Sons of the Pioneers. You might want to get David Kaufman's bio and read it to get facts. This version of "SJ" has influences of Ella Fitzgerald to it. So, it was probably recorded under the Columbia label where Doris had her contract where as the Les Brown version would have been with his company. Thanks, Dayniac, for your support of Doris Day.
A big THANK YOU for helping me point out that it was a previous Doris Day that was in the Roy Rogers movie -- all you have to do is look up the movie on IMDB ! She was in many B-movies - She was born probably 15 years before this Doris.
I don't know for sure but the Les Brown SJ might have been on the OKEH label -- many of those early songs were. Thank you - so happy to have someone else telling people that was a different Doris !!
She first recorded this in 1945, it was her first big hit.... It hit the nation's mood as the country moved away from the war years.... She was extremely popular with the Korean War soldiers (someone already commented on Col Potter, that dirty ol' bird, lol) and voted their favorite female performer. Rex Reed started a campaign trying to get her an Honorary Academy Award, but I dont know if he is still trying....
Well - more power to him -- I hope he succeeds - she deserves it !! Thank goodness she finally received the Lifetime Achievement Grammy ! What took them so long ??? Amazing !
Yep - she was pretty popular with the servicemen ! Thanks for your great comment !!
i am sitting here watching CBS sunday morning doing a piece on Doris Day. i think "wow. i haven't listened to her for so long. i would love to hear sentimental journey. i pull it up and listen to a couple of versions. really good to hear it. then i see yours. "this is my favorite version", i see why. i have never heard this version before. it is so different and really nice. i think it may be my favorite now. Doris Day never stops being beautiful.
I believe you are talking about another Doris. If you look up the movie - Saga of Death Valley with Roy Rogers - it states in the description that its not Day the singer.
This Doris was born in 1910 and passed away in 1998. She mainly made B pictures. Not the same Doris Day.
I really love the Les Brown - big band version. But there's something about this one that is great - it's really my favorite version. Thanks - glad you enjoyed !!
Hi Toni, Thank you again for sending another Doris Day song to me. This version of Sentimental Journey is recorded around 1952 for The Doris Day Radio Show. Made in the placid Eisenhower om 16-inch tracks. Probably with The Van Alaxander Orchestra.
I was going to say it does sound late '40s, or early '50s. (For late 1950s hard to imagine the band being and sounding so laid back.) Beautiful version and excellent clip! 5*****!!!
oh wow, you posted it today! i feel special i get to watch it the day it was posted! ^^ wow, doris day can have such different looks, in the picture as a brunette, she looks like Esther Williams, and in the picture, as her signiture blonde, and her hair was in a tall beehive, she looked like Kim Novak! oh, did you hear her Singin' In the Rain? it was very nice, it was posted on New Year's Eve
sentimantal journey .. very nice song !!

Hi,Dayniac4324!!
Well,it is supposed that Doris Day recorded this song in 1942,and not in 1952.
In fact, she recorded it with Les Brown and his orchestra.
Don't you believe to me,that's what I read.
You know?...I have always liked this song a lots, but didn't know it had a lyrics, until I found it here.
I always thought that Glenn Miller and his Orchestra played it,but I was wrong.
Greetings from Monterrey,MEXICO!!

I don't believe it was ever mentioned in her
bio nor talked about in general. She had a pretty rough teenage years and I guess most of
which was best forgotten. Try to listen to
her Just a Whisper Away. It is on the CD,
Love Him. Regards.

Oddly enough, I saw Doris make her final farewell on PBS and she sang It's Magic. I
thought surely this would be secondary to
Sentimental Journey. Romance On The High Seas
was her introduction to movies as an adult, but she sang in one or two Roy Rogers films
when she was a teenager. Sang with him and
The Sons of the Pioneers.
coywin 3 years ago
That's very interesting - I wasn't aware of that. I've never heard that mentioned - either in her autobiography or in any other bio's of her.
Dayniac4324 3 years ago
Doris made this popular during WW2 but she was also taking her oun journey as well the boys she sang for. Thank you.

You're so right.
I really love the Les Brown - big band version. But there's something about this one that is great - it's really my favorite version. Thanks - glad you enjoyed !!
