Turns out The Question originally had the spot of Rorschach in Watchmen, but when all the heroes ended up dead or useless at the end of the story DC decided to replace them on-the-spot created heroes based off the old ones they took out. The only other replacement I know is that Nite Owl replaced the Blue Beetle. And we all thought he was a Batman clone!
