Yep! Saint-Saëns was poking fun at Danse Macabre, which was, incidentally, his own composition...the entire suite references a number of pieces that were popular at the time. The whole thing, really, was meant to be humorous, which is why the animation fits so perfectly =)

Actually - Check out Camille Saint-Saens "Dance Macabre", on which this part of "the Carnival of Animals" is based upon.

It's actually one of my favorite pieces... and Saint Saens is one of my favorite composers.
