I seriously doubt that kiwido poi could hurt anyone, and doubt even more that behind the back weave is a fighting technique. To be honest, i think you just want to learn poi and that doesn't come with speed, but with good technique.
Poi aren't weapons, there is very little to no evidence that they were ever used as such. They were used by the maori tribes as a dance and as practice for warfare to strengthen the wrists. Plus they would really suck as weapons, it would be ridiculously hard to land an effective hit while staying relatively easy to dodge.
id take you on with a set of poi, unless they are rock in socks they arent gona do shit, and even so all i gotta do is kick you in the right spot, poi are harmless once they wrap...
I don't advocate poi as a weapon, but if you must pursue it:
Streamer poi don't count as a very viable weapon. Try non-streamer poi, with as little wind resistance as possible. You want as much mass focused in the poi head as you can handle, wile spinning at fast speeds.
If you can spin poi them with enough controlled force to do real martial damage, then you've got it.
Home of Poi's Beaming Poi have a history of knocking people out, so they are probably an example of weapons grade poi ;P
pois are from new zealand and the maori people used to practice with poi to use the mere/patu(a club made from wood, bone or stone) and is actullay the worlds deadleist hand weapon but no one is good enough to use two at once anymore
Yer well when they had a solid ball on the end. women used to guard the temples during war time in china (ming dynasty) as the men had to go fight they used pois and long rope with a steel ball on the end (like in kill bill). now we only see them as something for fun.

Yay, Poi as weapon, going back to the primitive age, why not? Sure that poi was a weapon in the past, but now people is smarter and don´t want someone get hurt. Poi are an wonderful work of art that can be made in many ways. why not let it bring peace and not violence? But I must say, I Am impressed by your skills Luke ;)
Impressive. You are well fast and I liked the 3 beat behind the back weave.
But you certainly couldnt use them as a weapon LordAzus. Not spinning like that at least. You'd take your own head off more likely than the enemy if you struck something during that swing.
Haha, that is nothing. My plans are to get a couple of small steel diamonds and attach those to chains with a nice grip. = eexxtreemmmlly deadly >:D

those are't very advanced moves in poi but they were used quite wisely and quickly through out the demo

yeah, they would be powerful, as well as scary as hell, but if your fighting a spear or a ranged weapon (arrows to fit the time period) your screwed.
another note, you did everything in the wall plane, if you where using these as weapons, the spinning would be different.
