This was such a wonderful teaser! To see those superb photos, little bits of captured movement, so discerning and expressive -- it's a special joy. When do we get to see this artist's documentary here in NY
I JUST LOVED IT! What the wonderful way to learn about and appreciate the development and history of dance photography. Steven is definitely a true artist in every sense. He's experienced personal and artistic triumphs and setbacks and become an inspiration to others. His contributions to Dance and Photography, have become an important part of a their history. Few artists can make that claim to historical significance. Clearly, we’re all blessed and enriched by his artistic achievements.
The best dance and dance photography documentary to date. I just wish it was longer in length as I wanted to see more! I hope it gets the viewership and exposure it deserves. Truly inspirational and breathtaking.
I had the privilege of viewing this documentary and not only is it a must see for those interested in dance, it is also compelling for any individual who has a dream or goal in life. Mr. Caras, against all odds, fought for his dream (s) and accomplished what few ever dare. His story is inspiring and uplifting - not to be missed. I highly recommend you contact your local PBS provider and find out when this special will be aired. Thank you Steve and Thank you Deborah!
Steve: So happy to see that this will be viewing on Public TV! Can't wait to see it. Please let us all know when it can be viewed in the New York/Metropolitan area. Kudos to you!
I saw this on PBS. I love documentaries about dancers but this is a great deal more than that. Ballet, in this case, saved a young man's life and opened the doors to multiple forms of creative expression. Caras grew up in a world in which "boys don't dance" but made his own path to dance professionally at a very high level. He became a protege of George Balanchine, and you don't get much better than that. My companions were all totally absorbed by the film. Several of us were moved to tears.
One man's personal journey to become a dancer, and then acclaimed dance photographer, becomes emblematic of the path all aspiring dancers take to become masters of their craft. Steve Caras shows us incredible images of the dancers, and gets top-notch glimpses behind the curtain not available to anyone else. One amazing aspect of this film is the number of ballet stars who provide their insights, who were willing to speak candidly in front of the camera. Also amazing is Steve's own candor.
This film is incredibly inspirational to young dancers. It documents the struggles and accomplishments of an extraordinary dancer and photographer. You get to catch a unique glimpse into the world of the Golden Age of Ballet in America.
This is an amazing film, I saw a screening in WPB, Fl. Caras is one of the most talented dance photographers today and has many iconic dance pictures including the famous bowing picture of Mr. B. More though than just a story about a photographer, it follows the complete career of a a male dancer in the United States at a time when dance was not considered an appropriate career for a man by many. It is a behind the scenes look at a very important time for NYCB. Inspiring and Engrossing.
