What a great performance of this quintet! It's so good to see people of different races united in playing the classical music that they love (something you don't see often unfortunately). Moment 7:20 is pure magic :)
Awesome! Really very nice interpretation! I've played several times the 2nd cello, now I will have to play the first soon :) But....hey! The violist is HUUUUUGE! :P How did he grow so big? At least he doesn't have the problem of small hands for a viola :)
@gregogr It looks like a viola to me. You should see the high school picture of the Orchestra I was in. All the girls like around 5'5" & 100Ib and the Viola player 6'4" and 250Ib & I, 5'9.5" 165Ib, LOL!!!!!
@aznmusicmaster It depends on who the cellist is. In this case Carter Brey was happy to play 2nd cello. As the "extra " member it is perhaps more polite and more usual for the guest to play 2nd cello, but often it is a celebrity (e.g. Rostropovitch) who may be invited to play 1st cello.
According to Albert Einstein (no, not that Albert Einstein), but the author of "Schubert: A Musical Portrait," this compostion employs "somewhat unconventional instrumentation, employing two cellos instead of the customary two violas. Most other string quintets follow the example of Mozart and call for an ensemble consisting of the four standard instruments of the string quartet (two violins, viola, and cello), plus a second viola."
Really? it's usually referred to as a String Quintet. However for some strange reason the balance is sounding a little better to me now- Hmm.... Desmond Neysmith is a wonderful player by the way.
Could be, but often this differentiates it from the much more common viola quintet. Boccherini wrote many cello quintets for example so it's just useful for differentiation.
Fantastic performance. Sucks the audience in right away! I had the pleasure of seeing them live a few months ago. They are very warm and generous with their time. Their personalities are just as great as their playing!

@Tomskicat They are a quartet with a guest cellist, like it says in the description, so that they could play this piece, which is for a quintet.

just out of curiosity, but isn't it usually the guest cellist that plays Cello I part when they're invited to play this schubert piece?
lovely recording, by the way
aznmusicmaster 1 year ago
@aznmusicmaster The guest cellist conventionally plays second part actually. I guess it could happen that they switch it up but that is not the norm.

Beautifully played, balance is a little "cello heavy" however.
