  • To all those confused. The song is about the son of a Ukrainian exile living in Macedonia when it was part of Yugoslavia. The son (who supports Shaktar) comes to Britain in the back of a lorry and disappears. The End

  • Favorite of favorites!

  • God! I adore this song so much! Joe is a fucking genius!

  • Gracias! Precioso. Hermoso hombre, hermoso artista, hermosa canción llena de sonidos profundos y muy puros. Thank you my God for Joe!

  • Macedonia

  • Barça goes to Wembley!

  • @mvtmdn I know about the town of Makeevka, but i didn't know that it's nicknamed "Macedonia", thanks for that info. But the song still makes no sence! If he's singing about an Ukrainian from Makeevka, why he mentions "exiles from YUGOSLAVIA". Find the lyrics and you'll see. Macedonia was formerly a constituent coutry of Yugoslavia, so how is this related to Makeevka or Ukraine? I think Strummer confused everything up unintentionaly. That doesn't make him a bad songwriter, but people make mistakes

  • @vbbskmk

    so, here's the lyrics:

"One of the Ukraine exiles of Yugoslavia"

i think joe mentions here ukraine people who left former USSR and went to Yugoslavia in hope of better life. So, when they came to Yugoslavia, they realized that there is war to come, and then they escape from Yugoslavia (what was not to hard to do, cause Yugoslavia had opened borders, which USSR did not had) to UK. i think this is the reason why is Macedonian mention, it has two meanings: (to be continued in next reply)

  • @vbbskmk (continue from last reply) two meanings: one is a nickname of residents of Makeevka in Ukraine, and another one is Macedonian like resident of Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. so, it does make sense, and no, I think that Joe did not make mistake in his lyrics. Macedonian is just ambiguous word in this song. just to mention, this is only my personal opinion.

  • @lordwerewolf Fuck u fucking rasist cunt, Macedonia is Macedonia not Greek or something else in your patetic lives ..Macedonia Forever and never fucking ever mess music with stupid rasist bollocks like u did. Here are the lurics u prick: Welcome to Britain in the third Millenium

This is the diary of a Macedonian, Macedonian

He went to Britain in the back of a lorry

    "Don't worry, don't worry, don't hurry."

Said the man with the plan

He said, "If you really wanna go - you'll get there in the end

  • This song is about a the american CIA, army and police force patroling the border, (pachinko) the nefarious zone is a zone of vile people, (the border of Mexico. the repeating words of mondo bongo and flowers and latino caribo, are the latino and caribean people trying to get in, with the little girls an women with flowers in there hair. basically, it's a song with a Latin groove about the myth of the American dream, and the nastiness and cruelness of life at the pachinko.

  • @ashevillecat Surely this song is about the misery of East European illegal immigrants struggling to make it to Britain only to find its a huge disappointment when they eventually get there? ........."Got off the train at Shadwell and disappearred without trace!" . "Who's going to make the Sandwiches?"

  • I've a great admiration for Joe! But no offence, the lyrics make no sence(rhyme). Im Macedonian and Ive been to Ukraine (Kiev, Odessa, Zaporozhye, Donetsk, Kharkov). These two countries r miles away from each other. Most Macedonians don't know much about Ukraine, and vice-versa. I don't get the connection "Macedonian... Shaktar Donetsk". I have read the other comments, but again, it makes no sence. And there are no Ukrainians in Macedonia, except from some brides who got married here

  • @vbbskmk

You wrong - in this context ¨Macedonian" - is a nickname residents of Makeevka (nick - Macedonia) - a sattelite city of Donetsk :)

  • This song was writen after Arsenal - Shakhtar game in Champions League. Joe found an inspiration in Shakhtar's struggling mentality and wrore the song about poor macedonian. 'If you really wanna go you got there in the end'.

  • Ukrainians don't just live in Ukraine, much of the eastern European nations were spread out across the Balklans, so yes not really bullshit after all.

  • none of you understand this. this is the story about young man who came to england but whose father emigrated from macedonia (former yugoslavia) to ukraine

  • i don't see the point ...

yugoslavia was much better and powerful satate than it was ukraine or for that time sssr

  • Its the other way round. His father moved to Macedonia from Ukraine and he went to England himself

  • No. A lot of Yugoslavs (royalists, Stalinists, etc) found themselves on Tito's bad side in the 50s and 60s and "defected" to the USSR (a rare occurence, to be sure), ultimately settling in Ukraine (not sure, but I heard from somewhere that Milla Jovovich's was one of these Yugoslav exiles) ... Fast forward 30 or 40 years to the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and the Yugoslav civil war, and thousands of Eastern Europeans are paying smugglers to sneak them across the English Channel and into the UK.

  • I am inlove with this song!

  • I love this song, I LOVE Joe Strummer ... I'm even part Macedonian haha this is perfect
