Hi Matt, I'm sure you know this iphone/android app. But just for other viewers' knowledge... you could have used "The Photographer's Ephemeris" to know the Sun's position precisely before the shoot. Very handy app.

did you use D5100 for video ? was that because the CMOS overheating so it stopped working ? It happened to me on D90 for video, I dont know whether D5100 improved or not with that...
