Both one of the greatest country singers and one of the greatest guitar pickers to ever live. Found out one thing he did to make his guitar sound even better. This was told me as the truth. Right before a recording session, he'd put on a new set of Black Diamond silver plated strings. Don't know if the still make them or not; haven't seen a set in years. They sounded great new,but were soft and would wear out very quickly. His "secret" was told me by someone who said he knew him well.
Another #1 hit on the Country & Western charts by The Southern Gentleman. It was also the 135th #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. And it was neck & neck between Sonny James and Buck Owens for dominance on the Country Music scene.
He has something wrong with his throat and is unable to sing anymore. He kept writing but hasn't been singing in years. I live 8 miles out of Hackleburg, AL (his hometown) He comes for the Neighborday Festival every other year and signs autographs. He's looking old, makes me feel that much older when I see how old my teen idols ae getting.
I've been listening to this song for 48 years. Isn't it amazing how one man with superb vocal talent playing a guitar lightening fast, and a small group of harmony singers, a bass and and an organ can make a song sound so good? This is the good stuff. Thanks
I wish someone would post a song called "Sugar Lump". That was one of my dad;s favorite Sonny James songs. My uncle ; dad's youngest brother played bass for Sonny James in the late 70's early 80's.
@mrshorty1962 My dad passed 2 years ago and my uncle passed last year. I do have this song on the original album. I wish they would release this song on cd. It was a hit for Sonny. My uncle told me that Sonny would refuse to play any venue that sold alcohol. Sonny is a born again Christian. I remember seeing him and Don Gibson in concert here in our hometown of Peoria, Illinois at the Shrine Mosque. My uncle got to play for both Sonny and Don Gibson that night. It was a high in his career.
I saw his 1996 award ceremony on tv and I was hoping he would play for us but that was an award not a concert. Does anyone know if he plays the guitar anymore? I know its too late in his life to have a powerful singing voice left. I'll say that Sonny James has been my all time favorite. I never get tired of hearing his music. Someone had told me he had cancer at one time but I never found out for sure. At the award he sounded strained to speak.
Sonny James was a great artist there is no doubt. I always thought it would be awesome if he and Jean Shepard would have recorded a duet together but that never happened
Sonny had a song out back in 1953. "The Cat Came Back" as kids we used to sit on the porch at night and sing that song.Just a memory I carry tonight, the songs on here brought it back. Thanks
When I was a little boy my dad would take the family to see Sonny James in concert at the Macon Coliseum in Macon Ga. This would have been late 60's. Now today I live less than a mile from him in Nashville. Its strange how things happen that way! He was a Great musician and entertainer.
I just thank Sonny for taking Young Love that Tab hunter destroyed and showed what a beautiful voice can do with the same song. I once saw him open a Woolco store in Houston Texas in the 1960s. Sonny could play the fiddle behind his back. A great entainer. Bobby Hopper from Houston
Thanks for posting this performance. I am a Sonny James fan from long, long ago. He would not perform in Clubs/Bars and therefore did not achieve the fan base that some of the more recognized artists of his time, however, a fantastic singer as well as a great guitar player.

I know he'a still living but I think throat cancer stopped his singing career. I'll bet he can still play a mean guitar though!

The Big" C "took hold as John Wayne said of his own life. Cancer may have been evident in Sonny's life earlier than we thought.

@3240590 Sonny will be 82 in May, what the hell are you talking about.
