@Rikotistic They've been working it already this week, cleaning out all the debris. It looks like they'll be able re-do that side of the house and move back in within a few months.
With the fire departments reaction time of 25 minutes I'd say that you must be living somewhere out in the woods, but that much is evident from the video itself.
@garouHH I think I may have over-stated the reaction time; it may have only between 15-20 minutes. Yeah, up in the woods, private streets with no accurate maps (GPS will not get you here). It has its advantages, but services from the county is not one of them.
OMG, so sad for them. I hope they can get enough money from their insurers to start over, the loss adjusters are probably already seeing how low they can get them to settle for. btw you live in a nice area!
It's frightening when it is so close, we experienced a neighabors place burning up in the middle of the night some time back - I opened up the blinds to see what all the fuss was and was SHOCKED to see a wall of flames - I sight I'll never forget. I couldn't bear to get my camera - but I had my shoes on ready to run.
@MotherReiver Not only were my shoes on, ready to run, but I'd started to load the car with essential items when the fire dept finally arrived (and good thing they got it under control, because the trucks were blocking my driveway and any exit path for my escape route).
@OhCurt Having seen the Bourne Identity, I'm aware of the damage a propane tank can do when angered by fire or Matt Damon. Luckily the fire was on the other side of the house and never really made it out this side.
@gabrielized Hopefully his homeowners insurance is paid up and this is an opportunity to upgrade the house. And, like you said, the most important thing is no injuries or deaths.
Our neighbour across the street had a basement fire and the smoke was shooting like a reverse rocket, up instead, about 40 feet in the air from all the pressure down below. The firemen saved it, even so. They are heros.
@not2tees It's amazing, the amount of smoke coming from around windows and vents, etc. - wherever it can leak out. And yes, the firemen (and women) rock!
I am glad no one was injured and the pets were rescued. Sad moments to see someone's hard work go up in flames - gone in an instant :( My best to them.. and why isn't "sad" listed in the reactions drop down.
@askmisscris Yes, their hard work: The thing is, we have other neighbors whose homes look like ill-kept tinderboxes, but this guy was meticulous in keeping the place up and clean. And that may have been his downfall: Possible fire source were rags used to treat the wood deck.
@kenrg But rags still don't spontaneously combust, do they? I mean they could catch fire if it was really hot out, but this was early in the day... If you ever find out about the source / cause of the fire, I'd appreciate you posting that info... this is scary. I'm glad you were so alert and proactive!!!! YOU are a hero, too, firefighters aren't omniscient.
The Fireman is the unsung hero we think of last until we need them at the most frightening times folks face... I fought two ship board fires in the navy. Entering those engineering spaces blind, feeling out the source on the hose team were more than sobering I can tell you... It takes a certain type to do this for a living and not just everyone is cut out for it... Good to hear no casualties beyond property...
@PappyStu The first guy to arrive actually just pulled up in his car with no equipment other than his helmet and coat (must live nearby and got the call on radio). He went in and started investigating and strategizing 10 minutes before the trucks and fire hoses arrived. He's our hero of the day.
@MrRandomWritings Anything that results in a good vlog is worth it in the long run, right? Well, maybe it would have been nicer to do a different vlog that day.
The propane tanks certainly add to the excitement! Yikes!!! I must admit that it's become second nature to grab the video camera any time anything interesting or unusual happens, but good thinking to wet things down before grabbing the camera!
@blackturtleshow It was a tough choice, video or safety first, but I'm glad I chose safety. And even on the video side, I just shot with my iPhone (3Gs) that was already in my pocket, I didn't go back inside to get my "real" video camera.
@mellowyellow1806 It was quite a relief to see them taking the dog out and leashing her to the porch, and then seeing the kitties running out in the yard.
Ouch! You live in a tree! And they burn! That looked absolutely terrifying. I would have been freaking out. You really have to admire those fire fighter guys. They must spend days on end sitting around waiting for fun such as this, but they are always ready. Thank goodness! Glad it all worked out.
@periurban It took them a little longer than comfortable to get here, but once they did, the fire fighters (guys and gals) were incredible and we thanked them profusely. A couple of redwoods were singed pretty bad, but they're hardy creatures, so we're hoping they'll survive.
What a terrible way to start a Halloween, or any day for that matter! So glad to hear that no one was hurt! Sounds if your priorities are firmly in order, call 911 first-- grab camera last! lol You did exactly the right things, one has to commend you for that. Hopefully that was all the scares you'll be receiving this Halloween, I'd say that was definitely enough!
Scary moments for sure! I have had this happen to me a few years back when I looked out my window to see my neighbors garage on fire! Explosions and all! Good to hear nobody was hurt... and that your property escaped harm!
@MoviesMusicNature Actually, come to think of it, this is the second time this has happened to a next-door neighbor of mine; the first was about 20 years ago. But don't tell the fire inspector that, okay? Our little secret.
@ChristopherMast I live in the mountains between Santa Cruz and San Jose; private roads with no accurate published maps (GPS will get you 3/4 miles away). Fun!
Fire is a scary and powerful force. From the video at the start it looked like it would have been a total loss glad it wasn't. Reminds me of about 25 years ago I was at my cousins home and their grandparents on the other side family lived right up the road above them about a tenth of a mile away. well one night their house caught on fire and it was when 911 was new here so everyone thought you needed the local prefix with it so by the time we figured out what was wrong their house was gone.
@bearchay889 If I'd had to look up a phone number for the fire dept it would have taken forever, 911 I was able to dial in the dark, before caffeine or shower... And, yes, when the trees started to spark up before the fire dept was there, I thought it was goners for that house, mine, and the whole hillside. They got there with about two minutes to spare.
Unique music to accompany contrary images.

The propane tank placement in relation to the fire... had I been in your shoes, that would have caused flames to shoot out of my ass.
Glad it didn't get any worse. Yikes!
