I am partly corrected.
Quran 24:4 states 4 witnesses are required to prove adultry of a free woman.
But Quran 2:282 states that a womens testimony is worth only half that of a man's in court.
So if there is clear evidence of sex, and no witnesses, she has no hope of claiming rape.
This seems to match what I've seen in the media, where women are claiming rape, yet being sentenced for adultery.
Agreed, no sin for her if rape is established.

a woman's testimony is only worth half a mans in certain cases, it's not a general rule. for example u mentioned 2:282 but if you read the full verse it begins with "O you who believe, when you transact a loan for any period, you shall write it down..." (the full passage is a bit long but u get the picture) so it becomes clear that this is regarding to certain business transactions and has nothing to do with rape.

In other cases it is equal to or can even over rule a man's. e.g. if you read 24:6-25:10 if a man accuses his wife of being "unchaste" and they only have themselves as witnesses (i.e. his word against hers) then he must swear by Allah's name that she is guilty - all the woman needs to do to prove she is innocent is swear by Allah 5 times that he is lying and she is free to go. Allah's curse would be upon whichever of them lied.

Well, not entirely true. There are plenty of religious scientists, but they actually seem like there are less of them every day. From what I understand, religious scientists usually only believe in their own religion in a general way, but don't take the scriptures seriously, and would prefer to use science to find as much 'truth' as possible. Ken Miller is a great example of a WELL respected scientist who studies evolution, but is a catholic. Check out his videos on human evolution. cool

I left Islam.
I live in Egypt, a Muslim majority country. My mother tried hard to raise me as a Muslim, but she failed. After thinking it through, I am now a proud agnostic, and a very living agnostic.
It pisses me off when people say that you can't leave Islam without risking your life. It's about as dangerous as brushing your teeth.

I'm glad to hear that you didnt risk any harm when leaving Islam. However many Muslims all over the world do risk sanctions from families, relatives and even from the state if they try to leave. Iran introduced the death penalty for apostasy last year. In my home country several cases of physical abuse, threats and deaths of Muslims who want to leave or "go against the faith" are reported each year. I can only imagine the number of Muslims who want to leave but dont out of fear of repercussions.

Saying that those people represent the majority is like saying kkk represents the entire white community. It is true, though, that there is a certain solidarity among most muslims, and I've heard that in some areas leaving Islam makes betraying the mob seem safe.
That said, there are progressive areas of Islam, they're just always overshadowed by wahabism.

I never said 'those' people represent the majority of Muslims in the world. I have no foundation for saying that. I have no idea the percentage of Muslims who feel compelled to kill an apostate in their (extended) familiy. Hopefully it is a tiny minority. But a minority is still a number too great. The idea of death penalty for apostasy must be universally condemned and the verse in the Koran must urgently be renintepreted with a benign and harmless meaning.

Unfortunately some of your peers thinks otherwise. Interpretations may vary, however the results are similar; Muslims who leave their religion face institutionalised punishment (by the state) or threats and physical punishment by extended family and society.
