Hell, it won;t let me post a freaking utube link. Anyhow, youtube search tsunamichuck and see his own channel called tsunamichuck, and he's a superb paddler and sanshiner and he tyravels the world and I envy him because he's got a set of balls and all. Steve
Chuck - Eric C turned me onto your youtube channel. You rock out, brother. That is so subtle, yet at the same time rockin', if that makes any sense. I gotta show you my pal tsunamichuck's videos. He plays a sanshin like a muther. And he's a kayaker, too. We should all get together--you, me, tsunamichuck and EC and drink beer and play stings. I can't play anything, but I can pat my thigh or something. Steve
In a double D tuning, I tune the bass string to a low g (dGDADE), and n A tuning, to a low A (aAEAC#E). I think for most old-time tunings, the A or G works. What is the pedigree of your 6-string?
Very very nice, thankyou. you have inspired me such that I think I will have to buy a 6 stringer when I have some spare cash! I notice you have some padding behind the head I use a plastic carrier bag (the crackly type seem best) behind the head on my 5 string I find it makes the notes clearer without losing much volume, what are you using?
Let me know if you are serious about the 6 stringer. I can get a very good price on the Gold Tone OT-6. I typically use a cloth to cut the resonance just a little. Looks like I put a sock in this one. I like socks because it is easy to change the amount of folds to get the sound I like.
i would love to own one of these, but tailpieces, bridges and srings may be hard to find... plus I think I like the regular 5 string better. this is interesting though, for a second banjo.
Well the instrument is a lot of fum. The strings are regular banjo strings with a low bass string. I have both 5 and 6 string banjos and use them for different reasons. The 6 string has a greater range than the 5 string, and it doesn't take too long to get used to it.
Chuck.... This is a haunting, beautiful rendition...bravo. I am thinking of investing in one of those. I have a Stelling Golden Cross and don't play clawhammer but I might get one just to noodle on, with just my fingers, no picks, it sounds fabulous, what do you think. Once again congratulations...brilliantly played. - Allan
I think I replied to you at the time but if I didn't, my sincere apologies. Thanks for your very kind remarks. I find that good instruments invite you to find music in you that you didn't know you had. The OT 6 has done that for me.
I agree... inspired is an excellent choice of word! What's that Chuck, a 12" pot? I said in another of your vids that it honks, but on this one it GROWLS! way cool my brother...
This version is inspired. When I first heard it, I thought it was an old obscure mountain tune. (What can I say, I have not followed the Rolling Stones!). I am inspired to learn this..
Hey Steve,
Thanks a bunch for your kind comments. Do you live in Illinois? Do you get to Florida? Enjoyed looking at tsunamichuck's videos..

Hi Chuck. I have had this older 6 string for a while. What do you tune yours to?

@banjochuck It may be a cool feature when you're playing melody like here.
Nice playing btw... Are those nylgut/nylon strings? Sounds great!

@migasaguiar Oh yes, steel strings

What tuning's this in, cause this is officially the reason I'm getting a banjo for Xmas.
Wonderful tone/playing/interpretation as well, I should add.

@WeezerFan666
Thanks! the tuning is aGDADE. Did you get yours? How did it work out?

Yeah, got a Recording King RK-R20 for £250. It's been great fun so far and I'm hoping to get down to learning it properly when summer rolls around.
And books/websites you can recommend as good places for a beginner to start?

Thanks!
The Gold Tone 14" rims holds a barking bass string. It is a lot fun to explore the darker sounds down there!
