Wow look at that thing shake, I'd say that's a pretty unhappy engine. I don't know much about their newer diesels, but from what I've seen and heard, they just don't make em like they used to.
I still have a peugeot 2.0 hdi. It sounded like that (heavy clunky tick) in 2008. I suspected it was a stuck or sticking valve. The mechanic didnt give me an opinion just "swap engine". For experient sake, I changed the oil with thinner 10w40. And added Forte oil flush and left it idling for 5 hours.
Then changed the oil again with 15w40 because forte flush costs £20 a go, I used 300 - 400ml of diesel. Left it running for another 4 hours. Checking on the noise every 20 mins.

@thescallykiller these thinks have lots of torque, 3000cc turbo intercooler with common rail direct inyection. They were never meant for speed but sure for lots of torque, i would compare the torque with a 3.4 v6.
you see i have a auris T180 which develops 177hp and 400nm of torque from a 2.2 VGT D-CAT toyota engine. On paper the hilux has less power and torque. How is this possible?
@thescallykiller you're right about that, this hilux has 343Nm of torque @ 1400rpms, your 2.2 has 400Nm but at 2000rpm, thats the difference i can tell between the cc's. Even though that engine has more power and torque, it's meant for another kind of use, but pretty impresive an engine so small can deliver that kind of power.
yeah, i just dont want to downgrade on power too much when i get the 3.0 hilux auto in summer. My auris has the same engine as the IS 220d lexus. Its a proper good engine, sounds like a pile of shite when revved but it does kick. And returns 45mpg. Have you seen the 3.0 hilux auto's?
@thescallykiller common rail diesel's sound horrible when revved, i guess we need to get used to it, i've seen and driven the hilux automatic sure, sweet truck, there's no issues at the moment with these pickups, only the one in this video but that was human mistake.
then the injector will be having a very bad fuel spray pattern in each cylinder which means different combustion characteristic of every cylinder. When the combustion are different from each cylinder the most possible symptoms are high vibration, loss of power, loud noise and many more.
TOYOTA D4D diesel engine is having a major fuel system design flow or let say making tolerances so close than what is practical to gain more power and efficiency against equal engine but it become very sensitive with fuel purity. Because of its very close tolerances in the fuel system and the fuel got contaminated it will cause seizure to the fuel pump and them the metal particles will partially obstruct the injector,
Why can see the shaft on top of the engine? suppose have a top engine cover rite? well, send to toyota service and repair. commonrail engine is a bit different than normal engine.
This truck is already fixed and on the road we where able to find origin of failure and solve it uncovering it was part of the diagnosis procedure and perfectly valid under certain conditions you are right common rail uses different approches to technics but it`s not rocket science :-)
You guys have to check out it's Balancer shaft. We found one of these noises coming from a worn-out Balancer shaft!! Also you guys should check out it's front engine pulley/damper as this might be broken or loosen.
you might be right about the balancer shaft!, but we'll never know, since that balancer was eliminated... know the car is running perfect, has like 30000kms since complete rebuild, with no failure.

haha, it's not mine mate, it's from some kind of sales agent that drives across the country all week. We just discovered what was wrong with this car, the fuel inyectors (common rail diesel system) didn't made a proper seal against the head, allowing some combustion gases mix with oil, causing the oil conducts to block with sludge and some other things, this was a 2month nightmare but it's solved now.
